What's Life Like in New York City?

Well I did turn my head sideways so they did look the right way! And I must reluctantly congratulate your Yankees for sweeping my Red Sox.

Thank you br. I did plan my weekend around being home for those three games. But there are still six games left to the regular season and a lot to be determined before the wild card game next Tuesday, but as of this Monday morning, I am quite content. :001_smile:

On the Park Avenue side of Central Park at East 105th Street are the Conservatory Gardens. I visted that as well yesterday.

I think that because I took these pics vertically instead of horizontally, they come out on this forum board in the correct position. This iPhone camera stuff is still new for me. Perhaps you can teach an old dog new tricks. lol

Look sonny I am 2 years from 80 so I am the old man here! I am homebound as I said before, so have no need for any kind of cell phone only a house phone so of no help to you in that regard, sorry. But in any case you flipped so now these great pictures are perfect.

Thank you but they look even nicer right side up. lol

They're great pictures Mikey. But yes. Those kinds of frustrations are what led me to give in and post just about every pic separately on the other thread. haha

I am trending that wayin breaking down my vintage movies into sections & only post single pictures on everything else.

Another set of great pictures, Mikey, thank you. Ieven see a distant relative. Ha! Ha!

I really wish we still had a separate forum for non porn related stuff, as it is silly to be mixing everything up in one, but it is what it is.

Yes fall is finally here, global warming affect.

Yes. Fall is really pretty. It's the season that follows which I'm not a big fan of. haha That's a big reason I live in Florida. :)

Thak you again Mikey for the pics. I love to be able to vicariously walk around your wonderful city and see the sights. As I mentioned earlier in the thread I enjoy knowing what current costs are on such things as a subway ride, the price of gas, the market rate cost of a standard apartment, or the cost of a taxi for a 1-10 mile drive. Those kinds of daily tidbits of NYC life. :)

Thanks Tampa. You did start this thread. I live in the city and never take a taxi and I don’t drive so I have no idea what gas cost per gallon. Apartment rates vary tremendously depending on what part of the city you live in, usually in or close to Manhattan are the highest and the further away from Manhattan the more reasonable. As they say, “location, location, location”. lol

Subways I do know about. A standard one way ride is $2.75, but New Yorkers buy weekly or monthly cards or unlimited cards at a substantial discount. And best of all if you are over 65, you can get a Senior Metro Card, which is half price, so for me all rides are basically $1.38, and that goes for all buses as well. So you can travel from the southern tip of Queens to the most northern tip of The Bronx for very little money by public transportation.

Mike when I lived there the subway system to put it kindly was not the cleanest place, has it improved any and what is the crime rate there like?

Not to sugarcoat it, there are problems on the subways. Homeless people are an issue and as the weather gets colder outside, more are coming in the stations and on the cars, however most are harmless. And during the height of the pandemic, the system was shut down for several hours early each morning, before 5 AM to thoroughly wash and sanitize every car. We are back to 24 hour service but cars are still sanitized each day and the city has put many more police officers in the trains.

I found this article in the New York Post from November 14, 2021.

NYC subway crime drops as daily ridership continues to increase
By David Meyer
November 14, 2021 5:34pm Updated

Major felonies on the New York City subway were down in nearly every category last month, according to new NYPD stats — even as the system saw around 10 million more total riders than in September.

NYPD recorded 40 robberies, 85 grand larcenies and 34 felony assaults across the MTA’s 472 subway stations in October, according to figures to be shared at Monday’s MTA board committee meetings — down, respectively, from 52, 96 and 36 during the previous month.

Overall, October saw 161 major felonies on the underground rail network — compared to 184 last month and 154 in October 2020. Meanwhile, felony assault in the subways has stayed steady after a frightening headline-generating surge in May.

Adjusted for ridership, crime is down significantly: With 83.4 million total riders last month, there were just 1.93 crimes per million riders. In October 2020 — amid pandemic-depressed ridership of 48 million — the subways saw more than three crimes per million riders.

MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan attributed the reduced crime to an NYPD surge on trains and platforms that began in May, as well as increased ridership making the system safer in general.

“Riders are coming back and crime is coming down, which are favorable, self-reinforcing trends for the MTA and New York City,” Donovan said in a statement. “The NYPD surged officers into the subway system this summer as the MTA accelerated roll-out of security cameras, reaching all 472 stations. Criminals who prey on transit riders know investigators will have their picture and justice will catch up with them.”

There are nevertheless some causes for concern. Grand larcenies — which spiked in September — remained much higher in October than throughout the pandemic.

The bottom line is that it is not 100% clean or crime free, but I take the subway back and forth to work two days a week and ride it often on weekends and I’ve never had a problem, and I feel safe using the system.

Thanks for responding Mikey! :)

Since you posted the subway map, I'm assuming that that line is indeed a subway line underground that channels under the ocean to Staten Island? Or can Staten Island only be reached by boat or ferry?

Excellent question Tampa. Actually the subways run on four of the five boroughs. Staten Island can only be reached by ferry from lower Manhattan or the Verrazano Bridge from Brooklyn. However there is a part of the MTA, (Metropolitan Transit Authority) who run the subways and buses for New York City. It is called the Staten Island Railway line, but it is only one line that basically takes Staten Islanders to the ferry to cross into Manhattan.

Speaking of the Staten Island Ferry, it is a great way to get between Manhattan and Staten Island. It runs 24 hours a day and get this, it is FREE. You even pass the Statue of Liberty. You don’t stop there. For that you have to pay for the ferry that goes to The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. But particularly on a warm day, a free ferry ride to Staten Island is an enjoyable way to spend some time. It takes around twenty minutes each way to cross the East River to Staten Island.
