Time for a new rating system?

For myself I've given scenes a 5 that didn't necessarily seal the deal for me. If I see that both models reasonably passed the straight test with me and they put in solid performances...I'll rate it high. :)

It would if people voted the same but they don't. A 8 to you may only be a 6 to me etc etc. Also your interpretation of Very Good may be a lot different to mine. We'll never get it right I think overall the current/past voting rings true. Erik and Ross have lasted up there with the best, so something is appealing to us all.

I think that the present system is totally based on "how you feel" rather than on any objective criterion. The first objective before a judgment is formed is what is expected from a truly straight man doing gay sex? Once this is secured, then the judging can begin with any concrete basis. Right now I surmise that most members give rating based on whether they got their rocks off and not on whether the model comes across as authentically straight and was his performance convincing. If this objective is not factored in the rating, then what's the point of Broke Straight Boys? It will be just another gay porn site!
Angelone, intellectually I agree with your entire post, except for one factor. The subject matter here is sex, and I would venture to guess that 99% of us found ourselves on this site, after searching for some good jerk off material. And therefore I think it is a different kind of a site, where it is impossible not to judge a scene based on how sexually excited we became watching it.

And of course while the "straightness" factor is important to both you and I, I have spoken in messages and on the forum with dozens of members, over the years, who do not care if the guys are straight. When I first heard that it boggled my mind, but I now understand that different people are members here often looking for completely different things. That's why I'd always be amused when David would grow frustrated and even angry with us on the forum, when he would change something based on forum feedback, and then other people would complain, and David would say, "There's no pleasing you guys". And of course that is correct because we are not all "like minded" and our opinions can differ greatly.

So when it comes to voting on a sex scene. I would have a difficult time voting and not relying on my trusty "peter meter" to tell me how to vote. :masterbate:

Erik's rating system works for me.:w00t:

Or how about this... 0- I wouldn't touch him even if I had a gun to my head, 1- I'd touch him if I had a gun to my head, 2- I might touch him if I were really hard up, 3- OK, I'll touch him but he has to go first. 4- Oh, yes, I wanna feel that dude up, 5- I would lick every inch of that stud's body.
Erik's rating system works for me.:w00t:
While Erik's scale is a lot more descriptive than my theories, but we basically agree that we give the highest ratings to the model's we want to "lick every inch of that stud's body" to.

whatever scoring system you use, you have to have guidelines such as 0 - not my cup of tea. 1 - rather watch paint dry, 2 - below average, 3 - average, 4 - above average, 5 - way above average.... Or similar lines.

at 73 years of age, my scale would be slightly different from most:

0. I’m dead and can no longer vote

1. I’d do him even if i couldn’t take off my clothes

2. I would risk a lot to do him naked, if only for a minute

3. I would do him even if i risked a heart attack

4. I would defy court orders to do him

5. I would kidnap him and risk everything

Well, I know when I vote on an update, there are a lot of factors that come into play. First, of course, is whether or not I find either of the models attractive. If I don't like a pic of the upcoming scene, I won't bother watching it. Now, that changes depending on the reviews. I've found more models that I do like than I'd care to admit by taking advice from reviews, as opposed to only responding to the thumbnail or the scene pix. Another factor I look at is whether or not I am turned on by what I'm watching. A lot of that has to do with the gay/straight factor, for sure. But, this is porn, and it's supposed to be titillating, gay, straight, bi, transgender. If it's not, there is a problem. Then there are those scenes where I like the models, the action is fine but uninspiring to my libido, but they did their job well. I might rate that update lower because it didn't do it for me, and that's ok, in my opinion. After all, the rating system is subjective. So, an update that toots all my horns, has attractive to me models and everyone looks like they had a good time, that is a 5 for me, whether or not I believe the models to be completely straight. And yes, I really do care. The straight factor, the omg moment when a straight guy looks at another man's cock and can't stop looking at it and wants to play, is really really important in the scheme of my rating system.

Since I rarely get my rocks off while I'm watching a scene, I don't vote on strength of orgasm, for instance. I vote on whether or not I might think of the update while I have a wank later. 5 means absolutely positively probably did before I bothered to vote because I couldn't make it past the ending before I headed to my toy bin. 4 means great, I liked the update, one of these guys really got my juices flowing and I will definitely think of him later, and I can't wait till bedtime. 3 means I liked the update just fine. The guys were reasonably believable, were reasonably attractive, and I just watched gay sex so I'm a wee bit horny. Might or might not rub one out. Depends, but it's not a priority. A 2 for me is an update where I can appreciate the work that went into the scene, but it didn't toot a single horn, I didn't even get a tingle down south, but I think everyone did a fine job. A 1 for me is a scene where I don't care if I ever see either model again, and I would hardly bother going out of my way to watch either model again even with a really really great recommendation from a member who's taste I really like.

I agree a 1-5 system is awfully generic for expressing our passion about a scene. Particularly if we really really really like a scene. I might give a 5 to a scene like Spencer and Denver because it far surpassed my expectations, but then what happens with Carter and Max?!?! A 5 just isn't good enough. *sigh*

Interesting thoughts. As far as how we interpret your response, we look at hits, votes, comments, tweets, the lot. The comments often reveal alot more than the simple vote. It does help us to have a consistent voting range for the purposes of relative comparison though. Let me read through the rest of the comments...

I always appreciate it WebMonkey when you interact with us. And I appreciate when you remind us of the real factors that truly judge if a model will be back and how often. Some people have always believed that their votes were the same as television ratings, but you confirm that it is only one factor in the process of evaluation.

And I still think that a 1-10 voting system would give us some much more range to rank a model and a scene.

Thanks for being with us whenever you can. :thumbup1:
