What's Life Like in New York City?

Very nice pictures, amazing history there!
Indeed it was. The highlight was going down to the basement of Plymouth Church to the actual rooms where the escaping slaves were hidden during their escape to freedom. I‘ve lived in New York City my entire life but only in the last seven years, since I joined the walking group have I come to appreciate all of the fantastic history right here in my city. I’m not much of a reader, but walking, looking and listening have increased my knowledge and appreciation of my surroundings incredibly.

Just a quick shot from this morning at 7:30 AM when I was out buying my morning newspaper. I looked up at the tops of the buildings on Montague Street over the retail stores on the ground floors, and thought how the architecture is from the 1800’s and wondered what the street actually looked like from ground level from 200 years ago.

Pertinent to my last post, I was searching for pics of Montague Street from 200 years ago, and while I did lt find that I saw this:
“At the corner of Remsen and Hicks, I look up at the brownstone where the words “Remsen” and “Hicks” are carved into stone under the second floor windows. This remnant from the past helped identify the streets for the 19th century taxi coachman who sat high on his horse drawn carriage.”

I saw the same thing on Henry Street and took a pic of it a few weeks ago. Amazing to think that these were the “street signs” for the horse drawn carriage drivers on these same streets all those years ago. I am fascinated by the history of my neighborhood and city.

Love the pics! Horses are beautiful creatures, my brother and sister-in-law have several, such gentle giants.

AS you guys are encouraging me, I took a few more pics this morning as I did my errands. I passed Grace Church on Hicks Street, From Wikipedia:

Grace Church had its own beginnings in the early 1840s, when a small group of Brooklyn Heights Episcopalians established Emmanuel Church on Sydney Place. The parish quickly outgrew its space, and a new church was incorporated in 1847, taking the name Grace Church Brooklyn Heights.”

First a couple of pics of the church itself, then off across the street on a Dead End Street called Grace Court Alley. At one time these houses were stables for the horses. Today they are individual townhouses. I looked up the price and found this.

Here are my pics from earlier this morning.

P.S. I live in a one bedroom rent stabilized apartment. I am the pauper of the neighborhood. Lol

The last 2 pictures have a more European look to them. Almost Dutch? Maybe an ode to the the olden days of New York being New Amsterdam and a colonial territory of The Netherlands?

This TD Bank on Atlantic Avenue & Court Street has this giant photo in the window with a 1920’s date. We don’t see any horses in this pic, but I assume that is how the carriages moved about.

What a beautiful neighborhood you live in! Thanks for posting the pics!

Back in 2021, I went to Central Park as one of my first outings after the Pandemic, and these are some of my favorite photos that I’ve taken with my iPhone.
