Real Sports - Athletes and Teams that we follow and admire.

I would have liked to see that interview. Joey never developed into the great college shooter that fans thought he might like JJ Redick. But he does seem like a good kid who I feel certain will be successful in life but not as a basketball player.

As far as Coach K, he captained the Army team and coached them after his Army commitment overseas. Army is playing Duke tomorrow night in Coach K’s final season.

FYI, if your cable provider is Cablevision/Optimum, it carries the ACC Network which covers all ACC football and basketball games both with advance previews and post game recaps and interviews with coaches and players. So it would be a goldmine for a Duke basketball fan like you living in NYC. I do pay an extra $5 per month for my college sports pack, so the ACC Network probably is in there along with the cable channels of the the Big10 and SEC.

I used to have a crush on Dukie Alex O’Connell and I posted many of his pics on my old sports thread.

Now he is in his second year at Creighton after transferring form Duke. I see he is averaging 15 ppg after three games this year. Major teams often play minor opponents early and that can change, but I wish the kid luck. I’m still partial to Alex. Lol

Mike, I am glad sports plays a big part in your life. Never lose that love!

Sorry, Mike, for your Giant's latest loss.
Thanks br. But I’m afraid the Giants are just in the middle of amother lost season. And Duke played last night at 9 PM, so after the first quarter and change of the football game, my focus was all on basketball and Duke. As the old saying goes in relation to the Giants. lol

As can be said of the Padres & ex San Diego Chargers

How true that is. Now the Chargers are despicable to true San Diegan as I was until economic reality set in. They fled the city in the middle of the night after making all sorts of promises & accepting aid. But they will never achieve the status of the true LA team, the Rams. Other teams move such as the Dodgers & Giants but not in the middle of the night.

Actually the same thing happened in Baltimore to their loyal fans of the Colts with their rich history of Johnny Unitas and all.

“On March 28, 1984, Bob Irsay (1923-1997), owner of the once-mighty Baltimore Colts, moves the team to Indianapolis. Without any sort of public announcement, Irsay hired movers to pack up the team's offices in Owings Mills, Maryland, in the middle of the night, while the city of Baltimore slept.”

This is why when I hear fans bitch and complain that the players make too much money, I say the owners are making a lot more money or they couldn’t afford the salaries. And in examples like yours of San Diego or the one I listed from Baltimore, the owners are out to make a buck too and the fans be damned.

Yes I remember that ,too, & sadly yes you are only too right. I was a naïve optimist but sadly I became over time a a realist, still hoping things might turn out okay some of the time!

Don't know how far back you went with the Chargers, but when the old AFL was founded in 1960, for that first season they were the Los Angeles Chargers, who then moved to San Diego in 1961 and stayed for a long time before re re locating back to Los Angeles. I do agree with you that they should have stayed in their long time home of San Diego!

P.S. Of course the other Los Angeles NFL team, the Rams, are just as bad and probably worse as they went from first being the Cleveland Rams, then the Los Angeles Rams, then the St. Louis Rams and then back to being the Los Angeles Rams!

I came to San Diego in 1970, so yes I new its full history & the strong base it always had in its old home in the then middle of San Diego. It was close to where we lived.

Yes I know their equally sordid history as well.

In anticipation of Friday night’s big game in Las Vegas between #1 Gonzaga and #5 Duke, I watched the first half of Gonzaga’s ass kicking of previously unbeaten #2, UCLA. Number 2 on the right is 6’10” Sophomore Drew Timme who is one of the best players in the nation, but even more intriguing, under the basket is #34, 19 year old Freshmen Chet Holmgren who is 7’ 1” and has a great outside shot as well as an inside game.

Duke will counter with Freshmen Paolo Banchero, 6’ 10” Freshmen

And rising star Freshmen AJ Griffin.

Gonzaga is a lot more experienced and may crush Duke as they did to UCLA last night, but this is a key early season match-up I am really looking forward to, late Friday night! Go Duke. lol

Agree that is one great early season test for Duke!

Being a Duke fan living in New York City can be tough particularly in November where no one cares about college basketball except for our local teams like St. John’s and it is still not heavily covered in the press. I first discovered the internet in 1999 and decided to buy my first computer primarily because I discovered all the websites devoted to college basketball and to Duke. (I soon discovered porn on line, but honestly did not buy it for that, lol).

Anyway tonight is the match-up I’ve been looking forward to for months now since I heard about the game. It is being played on a neutral court in Las Vegas and it will be a late start eastern time, but I will nap earlier in the evening and be ready for the showdown. Gonzaga is an 8.5 point favorite, something I cannot remember for years of Duke being that heavy of an underdog.

I knew about All-American Drew Timme, but I am learning more and more about “freak of nature”, Freshmen Chet Holmgren. From The Duke Basketball Report, regarding Holgren.

“ Holmgren is the guy people probably most want to see. At 7-0 but just 195, Holmgren is a remarkable mix of outside shooting, ballhandling and shotblocking. And, we should also say, passing: he’s a very good passer and able to see over just about anyone to do it. Despite his thin frame, he’s proven to be surprisingly tough.”

I’ve read a lot about Gonzaga and watched the first half of their blow out win against #2 at the time, UCLA on Tuesday, so now it is just to play the game. It will be a tough match-up but as a fan I am always at least cautiously optimistic. GO DUKE!!!!

I am a creature of the net having started using back in 1965. As you said Mike the net opened to the general public in 19909, before that it was reserved for solely for science & the military. I am so glad sports is a big part in your life. Thanks to my then lover I got into tennis & rugby & thanks to starting these 2 sports related threads it has become a big part of my life. Sadly due to health issues yesterday was just another day, so my posts made it great & the responses on all the threads I posted were even more important for me..

Duke defeated Gonzaga in a thrilling game that wasn’t settled until the final minute. Great game between two great college teams. I expect a rematch in March or even early April in the Final Four.

I am very happy for you, Mike you have indeed a lot to celebrate.
