Olympics 2012

I watched the opening ceremony and I thought it was very well done. I liked the first part the best up to the Olympics rings hanging and burning. The music was really nice too, got a few goosebumps. Well done London.

Too much to mention

From the fields in 1600, through the Renaissance to the industrial revolution... Next James Bond is escorting Her Majesty the Queen, in a chopper to the stadium where she lands by parachute... Roan Atkinson alias Mr. Bean in the orchestra... Paul McCartney and all those details, the acting, the humor. Great narrative, what a show!

PS: Job well done Jon!

Well I hope you enjoyed the opening ceremony. It was okay if you understood British history but kinda confusing if you didn't. Best part was the lighting of the flame - totally unique. Worst part - Paul McCartney singing - he's past it.

It was quite a show! I did enjoy most of it, but I haVe to admit, I didn't care for the kids and the beds. I understood the message, I just didn't care for how it was depicted. I must say though, it did cause me to pause and think about all those fabulously talented authors who have given the world so much enjoyment.

I think that is why some times you don't understand our society Jon. Your society is an evolution of over 1000 years of history and culture, whereas ours has been a "society" for only 250 years. Still, I think we have accomplished quite a bit as a nation, over such little time. And while we may still be experiencing "growing pains", and our society doesn't necessarily always offer the Best way of handling some things, I would NEVER consider living anywhere but in the good old USA. Granted I have not experienced many places, but I have been to England, Holland, Belgium, France, Canada, and Mexico. All beautiful countries in their own right!

Sorry to haVe gotten off topic. I think the UK and London have indeed shown they were ready for this Olympics, and I think you all did a fabulous job. There were many memorable moments throughout the evening! Romney was talking out his ass before!

Only one person can win the gold, but I think every one who participates is already a winner! I wish them all a safe and joyous experience!

I got goosebumps too. I loved the very beginning when they showed British society evolving through the ages. When they showed how Britain pioneered the Industrial Revolution with all its benefits and flaws I thought it was a great history lesson for the whole world. It was a giant leap for mankind to be able to mass produce goods around the world. Of course the downside is pollution and much waste of resources in the mass consumption age.

When they explained how the Industrial Age meant that mankind was able for the first time to create tools of war that were the first weapons of mass destruction...that was very poignant. When they gave a moment of silence for all those millions who perished in the Great War...I admit to becoming a little choked up myself. Being a W.W.II history buff, the tribute to those killed in W.W.I really resonated with me. That part of the ceremony was especially well done.

I was thrilled that Britain wanted to showcase how proud they were of the national health care system as one of their greatest achievements after the Industrial Revolution. The political symbolism was not lost on me, as they know that equal access to good health care is a controversial issue in one of their former colonies of the empire...and now one of Great Britain's closest allies. I was really happy when they said that the people in costume as doctors and nurses really are doctors and nurses. What a way for a grateful nation to be able to give them thanks for all they do to help society.

I will have to re watch it sometime. I missed the first 45 mins as I was travelling back from work. Your analysis of the "show" give me goosepimples too Tampa. Danny Boyle will probably get a knighthood for compiling the show and considering who has been knighted recently, it's totally justified.

Rob - You said you liked the commentary !! Did you watch it on the BBC or was it translated into dutch. Tampa did you get the bbc commentary or was it overdubbed by some crazy arsed yank lol

My commentators were Matt Lauer and Merideth Vierra, from the Today morning news show. They did a great job.

The latter. ;/ LOL Maybe I can be fortunate enough to catch the BBC version online. :) I would enjoy a slightly different take on it as well.

I've just been watching the mens and womens swimming qualifying races. I'm pulling for Lochte this time around.

Jon, I watched the first half on Dutch TV and the remainder on the Belgian Flemish channel. The commentators speak Dutch and Flemish, over the soundtrack from the stadium; and the speeches in French and English were subtitled.

From Amsterdam I can watch the BBC and ITV etc. But we have great sports commentators as well. The BBC version can probably be downloaded all over the Internet.

It just cracks me up that such a large percentage of our most promising competitors are cute little Justin Beiber fans.:wtf: He is sending a "Beiber" care package to the women's gymnastics team........

Am watching the USA women vs Croatia in basketball. Amazes me how good women do play basketball!

Why is the Olympics bi-lingual ?

Felt sorry for Bradley Wiggins and his buddy yesterday when they didn't make the top 3. The Tour de France must have really taken it out of them. If anyone has been watching the volleyball you would have noticed that it comes from HorseGuards parade. This was where the IRA planted a nail bomb some years back which killed and maimed soldiers and horses.

Can't wait to see the new DREAM TEAM play. I have been kinda upset by the American swimmers though. They are letting these other countries out do them in the prelims.

Having read the non Murdoch Sunday press today, many reflected on how the world perceived the opening ceremony. There was a slight disappointment when apparently the USA did not show the part when there was a minute of silence when a wall of pictures of the victims of the London bombings of 7/7 were flashed up on the big screen. Again this was another part I missed because of work but we're a touchy lot us brits. Even the French thought the ceremony was fantastique...

Going back to the action and it looks as if the Americans have a new swimming superstar.
