I'm not sure if the story was about himself. Will have to do some research but agree, i'ts one of my all time greatest songs too.

Another two gale male singer/songwriters that I love are Mark Almond

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgBcEbbiSNY - don't think this is one of his own but a brilliant performance.

and Rufus Wainwright

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUeL8SGWwSU

Technically brilliant.

I'm not familiar with either artist, honestly. Thanks for the intro , Jon :tongue_smilie:

Mark Almond was the singer and main person from 80s duo Soft Cell - come on LL. Rufus is a New Yorker with dual American/Canadian nationality and has a sister Martha who is also a singer.

Funny thing is you are the 2nd American that doesn't know who Rufus is yet he is massive over here in the uk. He is now writing shows for the west end, wiki him..

I guess I am the 3rd American that never heard of them. Sorry, America is a big place, with a lot of talented people, not to mention the rest of the world, I can't possibly know about everyone.........That is why I check out the videos everyone posts, so I can broaden my horizons with trusted recommendations.:001_smile:

Jon, I remember knowing of his father, Loudon Wainwright III, who was also a musician. I don't know either the father or son's music, but I do know of them. I also remember reading a piece in the NY Times Sunday magazine, a number of years ago regarding Rufus coming out. He seems like an interesting fellow.

Soft Cell's combo of Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go, was a tremendous hit back in the early 1980's, when I was in my early 30's. I used to frequent the gay Marlin Beach Hotel, in Fort Lauderdale, in those days, and I met a young man from South America, who was 23 at that time. We listened to that song, and he told me that it always made him sad, and that he was too old to be single, and asked me to marry him. I respectfully declined.

Or check out this video of the song, which features a very hot young man in his undies tossing in bed for the first part.

I had almost forgotten that Jon has started this thread until I noticed the title of the thread:

Maybe Rufus tried the UK because he wasn't all that recognised in his home country. So he came to the land were pop music was born and we embraced him as you guys have embraced some of our pop stars. There is UK rock band of the 70s/80s called Barclay James Harvest who were massive on the continent and in particular Germany, but not very big in their own country England.

Here are 2 of my favOURite songs of theirs

I'm a small boy with blood on his hands.

And this one.

This is the only one I can play on my Ovation lol.

I really like this song. I heard it the first time when a friend posted it on her Facebook page, and then saw then perform at the Grammy's. I downloaded it right away. I love the singer's voice, and the instrumentation. Really good stuff, I think.

I love that song. I was impressed by their performance on the Grammys. I thought The Avett Brothers were good, too. Bob Dylan... Kind of scary.

My current favorites are Rihanna and Lady Gaga. I'm in a very pop and hip hop place right now, but I like a lot of rock, too. Hate most country. Hate funk-y music. If a song smooshes together hip hop/rap and rock/pop, I will most likely love it.

One of my favorite bands for happy pop-y alternative-ish rock is Jimmy Eat World. This song is an older one, but is currently in high rotation on our iTunes since my 14 year old son decided that this is his "song". He's currently suffering his first crush and really relates to this. It's actually the perfect teenage angst song.... I can't believe he's 14.... :crying:

Yeah, the group performance with the Avett brothers was really good, but I agree with you about Bob....

I love Lady Gaga. I'm getting into pop lately, but mostly I'm an alternative fan. I love 80's pop, particularly the euro pop. I'm not a country fan, either. I do like some funk from the 70s. Some Earth Wind and Fire is totally fab. But then, when I was in college one of my favorite local bands was called Scooter Crunch. They were a cover band, played a lot of Prince and Earth Wind and Fire and funky pop songs. They were a huge band, too. Had a wide variety of instruments. We got to know the guys pretty well since we saw them so often. We were groupies, I guess, of a local Des Moines, Iowa band. Haha!!! I don't listen to funk much anymore, but if an EWF song hits my playlist, I'll boogie my butt off....

my fav music goes from 70s Heart, to 80s Alternative, to 90s Alternative/Punk, to 2000s all the above

I've become totally obsessed with this song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pmu2-SWm0Ac&feature=channel_video_title

It's Trent Reznor's new band fronted by his wife. I remember thinking he'd marry me someday....Ahhhh...memories. Anyway I think he's a musical genius. And I did pee myself a little bit whe he won the Oscar for best score a few days ago. <3

Well, I finally put action to my words. I went through this post, picked everything I liked, asked all my friends and family for their favs, and created a new playlist for my iPod:) Thanks, and keep posting those favorites! I love my new playlist!!!

Thank you, z darling....

OK, so I have to admit that I'm several years behind the times in finding this band. It seems it's frequently that way chez moi...
But recently, I think I mentioned this here, I took all the songs I liked from this thread, all the songs my friends recommended on Facebook, and my BFF's favorites, and put together a playlist of all our favorites. Z turned me on to the Scissor Sisters. I have to say, I'm a bit obsessed. It's my favorite when I'm on the treadmill and frequently runs through my head on the playground and, well, my kids even just throw it into rotation on iTunes when I'm grouchy....

I just love this song the best. It reminds me of the things I loved best about the Bee Gees and Elton and disco.

And I'm including a couple of pix, too...

Thanks, Z... xoxoxo

I think I mentioned some time ago I've become a Jamie Cullum fan. He plays a mix of rock/pop/blues/jazz, with mostly a jazz influence. I started walking about 5-6 weeks ago to lower the cholesterol, get some excercise and, of course, drop some pounds (not the money!). This is usually the song I start my walk off with and is becoming one of my favorites by him....
