With the Yankees down 3 games to 0 on the brink of elimination in the 2024 World Series, 23 year old Anthony Volpe born in New York City, who went to high school in suburban New Jersey, a lifelong Yankees fan whose dream was to be the Yankee shortstop some day had a night to remember the rest of his life. He hit a grand slam to put the Yankees in front and they went on to win the game 11-4. The Dodgers still have a 3-1 series lead and the Yankees still need another win tonight to send the series back to L.A. on Friday night. A tall task for the Yanks but a great night for the Volpe, the Yankees and for me.

One more Anthony Volpe note. Back in 2009 when the Yankees appeared in and won their last World Series, Anthony was seven years old and his parents took him to the ticker tape parade down the Canyon of Hero’s. While it’s highly unlikely he will be in a parade this year, it’s still cool that he is playing and starring in the series for his childhood favorite team.

That sounds about right. The section directly behind home plate and behind the first and third base dugouts at Yankee Stadium are called the Legend Seats. They are separated from the rest of the lower deck to prevent anyone without tickets from trying to sneak in. They are sold in full season ticket blocks and include dining in one of two Legends Dining Rooms or waiter service at your seats. The only thing not included are alcoholic beverages which are extra.

I know because a friend of mine was given four free tickets every year as his company was a corporate sponsor, and I was always a guest who took advantage of the comp. I found this information on Google:

“Tickets for the Legends Suite Club at Yankee Stadium can cost between $400 and $5,000 per ticket. However, the price of tickets can vary depending on the date, opponent, and seat location. On Stub Hub, Legends Seats can range from $600 to $6,000.

The Legends Suite offers a premium experience with first-class accommodations, fine dining, and a variety of services. The suite is located between sections 014A and 027A, and offers intimate views of the diamond.Amenities include:
  • Padded seats with lots of leg room
  • Four restaurants for Legends Seat owners, including the Kettle Lounge
  • A server in each section who can provide food and drinks “
I hope my local public radio station made a lot of money on those two legend seats they raffled off! Thanks for the extensive description.

Congrats to the Dodgers for winning the World Series and for being baseball's best team (the two are not always the same). As a Met fan, I take some consolation that we won twice as many games against the Dodgers in the NLCS than the Yanks did in the World Series, but our problem was our pitching just ran out of gas, a good example being Mets best starter Manaea hit the 80 innings more pitched this year than last year mark, dominated the Dodgers in game two but hit a total innings pitched wall in game six and just could not get them out anymore. It was a great fun baseball playoffs this year!

Sports writer Dave Madden of the New York Daily News just wrote that not just the Dodgers but also the Phillies, Padres and Braves would up better than the Yanks at the end of the 2024 season. With their 4-0 regular season record against the Yankees plus winning twice as many games against the Dodgers as the Yanks, I think that that is the case for adding the Mets to that group. Still a great season by all of those teams and the best baseball playoffs in years!

Besides The Yankees, I am a fan of the New York Football Giants, (but the less said about the Giants, the better, )

But my other team that I love is not from New York but rather from Durham, North Carolina, The Duke Blue Devils. Duke is off to a 4-1 start to this 2024-2025 season, after beating the Arizona Wildcats last night in a true road game at McKale Center in Tucson Arizona last night. Duke won 69-55, but the story of Duke basketball this year is the top high school recruit from last year and the projected #1 draft pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, 17 year old, 6’9”, 205 lb. Cooper Flagg. He is not yet a great outside shooter but he did hit two clutch three pointers down the stretch last night, but he is a natural athlete who can do it all, dribble the ball, pass, rebound, go hard to the basket, play stifling defense and steal the ball, basically he is a complete basketball player in the true sense of the term.

He is still 17 and his body has not fully developed yet and his skill set is still forming but he is the real deal. As the season goes on, Cooper will get more and more national attention. This will be a fun season to see a very complete team including returnees, Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster, and fellow Freshmen Kon Knueppel, Khaman Maluach and transfers Sion James, Maliq Brown, Mason Gillis as the primary rotation, but Cooper Flagg is the story this year.

Mets sign Juan Soto to 15 year contract! Now I hope that they re-sign Alonso to pair him back to back in the batting order with Soto.

I was very saddened to read that one of my boyhood crushes, Dick Van Arsdale, originally on the New York Knicks and later drafted in the 1968 Expansion Draft by the Phoenix Suns, has died at age 81. This one struck me hard as I think of him as a young, hot athletic basketball player. Very sad for me.

I am looking forward to the resumption of Men’s College Basketball and “my” Duke Devils, who resume their season on Tuesday late afternoon against Virginia Tech after a ten day Christmas break. Duke is off to an excellent start, currently ranked #4 at 10-2, with the two losses coming to Kentucky and Kansas, two of the better teams in college basketball.

Duke resumes against Virginia Tech who has Duke transfer Jaden Schutt, who was one of the players who I found very hot!!! Unfortunately after two seasons at Duke, he never got much playing time and didn’t produce, so he entered the transfer portal. Jaden is 6’4” , 170 lbs and still just 20 years old. His forte’ is outside shooting. I hope for the best for him, just not against Duke. You know I’ll be checking him out on Tuesday afternoon!!!

Follow-up on the Duke-Va. Tech game yesterday, “pretty boy” Jaden Schutt did return to Cameron Indoor Stadium and started for Va. Tech but only played 22 minutes and had one basket for three points. Duke superstar Cooper Flagg had another all around dominant game scoring 24 points, but his defense and his passing are just as impressive as his scoring. I think this Duke team has the “right stuff” to make a good run this year in the NCAA Tournament but this for March and this is January and I’m enjoying watching them play!!!

Look like Jaden is bulging big in the first pic of him seated and looking quite suckable!

Duke won again on Saturday as the potential #1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, Cooper Flagg continues to impress. I’m loving watching him play and improve game by game.

I’ve been watching Duke for over thirty years and Cooper Flagg is one of the VERY special ones. Check out these two dunks last night against Pittsburgh! He’s awesome baby!
