They found the suspect of the United Healthcare CEO murder this morning and the internet is going crazy over his looks and how hot he is. His name is Luigi Mangione. He is good looking but he’s still a murderer. I haven’t personally had an insurance claim denied but apparently this man has.

I’m just curious of everyone’s thoughts.

edit: not necessarily your thoughts on his looks but the whole situation.

I personally use United Health Care and have never had a problem with them, but thankfully I never had a catastrophic illness which can be the problem I imagine. This situation with the shooting taking place on busy West 54th Street during Christmas tourism season makes it all so bizarre. Since it happened last week, I do feel like it’s a network murder mystery, especially with his escape by bicycle and then bus out of town. I’m certainly glad they caught him alive and we can hear from him to try to get inside the head of a murderer.

As far as his being hot, yes I noticed immediately from the security footage when he lowered his mask to flirt with the clerk at the hostel. I am reminded of one of the brothers from the Boston Marathon bombing, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev who was 21 at the time back in 2013. It is such a conflict for me to be turned on by a despicable murderer. But obviously these are terrible people who deserve severe sentences for murder.

Two other examples of “hot” murderers are Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer. I’m sure they used their looks to lure their victims, women with Bundy and young men with Dahmer. And I remember the fictional movie, “Looking for Mr. Goodbar”, with Richard Gere. I may be rambling but I’m tired and these are my stream of consciousness thoughts to Jay’s question.

First off, I don't condone murder, I believe we should be able to have constructive conversations about solving the issue. That being said, the majority of insurance companies are for profit, so they make money for their stockholders by not paying for their members claims. I have type 2 diabetes and EVERY year I have to go through process to justify why I need my diabetes medication so they will approve it, my diabetes can be controlled, but it will never go away. I tried multiple different generics but they didn't work with great success, or I had severe side effects. My medicine retails for $1200/month, and if not for my minor stockpile by stretching out my weekly doses a bit, I would have gone for 3 weeks without medication while my doctor went back and forth arguing with my insurance company on my medical need for it.

I despise them vehemently, the fuckers can go to hell on a one way Greyhound bus. Second case in point was my mother, she had just gotten out of the hospital and they had given her an inhaler to use while she was at the hospital. When the inhaler was getting low I reached out to her doctor to get a refill and the doctor happily obliged and sent it over to the pharmacy. I went to pick it up and it was full retail price, the insurance company wouldn't pay anything for it as it was not a covered medication. She felt absolutely wonderful on that and could breathe, but because the insurance company wouldn't cover it we couldn't afford it. We appealed and were denied to have it covered.

And in doing a bit of reading I found articles that said his company willfully used an Artificial Intelligence model that was 90% wrong in claims processing (because less than 1% of people appeal a denial), and he was being investigated for insider trading. I feel sorry for his family, but he made his own bed. Call me unsympathetic if you want, but that's my 2 cents.

It's absurd what insurance companies charge, the hospital and the medications. It all one huge scam.

Sorry to hear about your own dealings with insurance companies and well as your Mom.

I have United Healthcare and they only cover 1,700 every 5 years for a wheelchair now. It is something I need and can not live without so I had to basically pay over 6k out of pocket for a new wheelchair and I have a very good plan with United.

As for the suspect he is fucking hot that is for sure. I guess each person makes their own bed and Karma will catch up with you one way or another. I don't care how much United paid me I could never be the CEO of an insurance company unless the insurance company wasn't evil and I feel like they all are. I couldn't live with myself.

Not only does the killer look like a prep school boy, if fact he was. From the New York Post,

“Mangione, who is one of six kids, graduated as valedictorian from the Gilman School in Baltimore, where he played soccer, according to The New York Post.

The boys school in Baltimore, where tuition is currently more than $37,000 a year.

Upon graduating, he said he intended to study artificial intelligence at the University of Pennsylvania.

On his X account, he identifies himself as having a bachelor’s degree and a master’s of science in computer science from the Ivy League school.

Social media accounts believed to belong to Mangione paint him as an anti-capitalist who liked online quotes from “Unabomber’’ Ted Kaczynski that blasted the medical community.

Law enforcement sources told The New York Post that he subscribed to anti-capitalist and climate-change causes online, as well as raged against the state of healthcare in the U.S.

It’s unclear whether his frustrations with the industry stemmed from personal experience, though an X-ray image was shared on his X account of sacral spine fusion caused by a condition more commonly found in athletes than in the general population.”

————————————————————————————————————————-

Speaking for myself, from all appearances, he looks like the All-American boy, with wealthy parents, a great education as well as great looks, who should have been a wealthy young businessman starting an incredible future and now he will spend the rest of his life in prison. Because of his good looks and the notoriety of this case, I am sure we will read more and more about him and his life, and undoubtably there will be books written and movies made about him as well.

As I said last night, I personally have not experienced the ills of the insurance industry, but obviously it is very bad, just from our own folks who commented on this thread, Chac and Mark. But obviously none of this is a good excuse to execute the 50 year old president of United Healthcare. Perhaps this case will bring about more awareness and in some way, reform the apparently corrupt system, but this sure is a hell of way to make the case.

Mangione is certainly a handsome young man. He has also been quite clear about issues involving UHC and medical care over his back surgery. There is an x-ray showing his lower back. I have seen roofs that had fewer screws in them. According to some of his friends, he is in constant pain. If you look at the actual political views he expressed he is, like many Americans neither all on one side nor the other in the current split. He praises AOC, Reich, and Noah but likes Rogan and at least one other right-wing wanker. He did discuss some quotes from the Unibomber on his Goodreads page but also said that Kaczynski deserves to be in jail for what he did. Depending on who is speaking, the right and the left are both attacking this guy. I was a practicing lawyer for over 40 years. I believe in the rule of law not the mob or the vigilante. What he did was wrong. If what his friends and family are saying is true, some mental health issues have arisen with him as a result of his constant pain. He needs to receive a fair trial and if convicted, which seems likely based on what I have seen, he needs to be punished. It is a tragedy to see someone's life, once so promising, turned into shit.

As for Thompson, he did not deserve to be murdered, no one does. But I will shed no tears for him now that he is dead. Thompson took over the Insurance division at UHC, including the pre-approval system. He instituted an AI-based system for reviewing claims. He started in 2021 and by early 2023, denials for care had more than doubled from 10.9 to 22.7. He also jacked profits up to the highest that division had ever seen. He received a huge bonus for that. One of the areas UHC was being investigated concerning, was the massive increase in denials for post-acute care for seniors and others suffering falls, strokes, or other medical events that require physical and speech therapy among other therapy once the acute event has passed. In other words, if like me in 2013, you had a minor cerebral "incident" and needed speech therapy for six months, UHC might well have not approved it, stating that given your general health, pre and post-event, you would not benefit from the therapy. It is worth noting that denials can be appealed but 96% of people do not do so. However, those that do appeal, at least with UHC, have been successful in close to 90% of the appeals.

Like some others here, I use UHC for my medical insurance. I have a Supplemental Plan and a Part D plan from them. I have never had any serious issues with them but I have traditional Medicare, not an Advantage Plan which means I choose my doctors and I do not need permission from UHC to see a specialist. I do not need pre-approval for any treatment or procedure. However, most regular policies that UHC issues to people not on Medicare are HMOs or PPOs which limit people to approved doctors, hospitals, and specialists and require approval for everything from therapy, surgery, and medications. The same is true for anyone on Medicare who is on an Advantage Plan. and UHC denies approval for service and medications at a rate twice the average rate of all other medical insurance carriers. And, UHC is the big player in that market. It is also a for-profit company and frankly I find that there is an inherent conflict of interest when it comes to medical care. A for-profit company has a primary duty to its shareholders to produce profits. And the only way to produce profits is by cutting back on the services provided to policy holders. Thompson did not create the current absurd health system we have in the US but he was an active and willing participant in creating profits for the company he worked for. He was paid millions every year for his efforts. So, while I did not and would not wish harm on him, I do not weep for him.

I second what @Jaybifla says. Much more eloquent and with much less venom than I had in my post. I'm just SO frustrated having to fight to get what I'm covered for in my plan. I am very lucky that it is a good plan, but the hoops they put in are maddening. And don't even get me started on PBMs and CVS 😒

From the outside as well so won't comment on the health insurance side of things. However I'm not convinced that this Luigi guy is the shooter, the chin doesnt match, Luigi has a bit of a uni brow which the shooter doesn't have going by the CCTV photos (more than would grow in 5 days), the nose also looks different.

Everything about this was executed almost professionally but he turns up in a Maccy Ds with a backpack with the fake ID etc? it smells fishy and I'm not buying it!

Shall I put my tin foil hat on now?

You could be right wouldn't that suck for this guy if he didn't do it. It's weird how he was all over the internet but just found in a McDonald's lol

Welcome to the Broke Straight Boys message board sjhuk85.

Thanks for the welcome! 😃

I do not condone Luigi Mangione's actions (supposing it is definitely truly him that pulled the trigger). It sends the message that murdering anybody that you deem to be amoral for whatever reason is okay. If it is okay, then it is also okay for somebody to go murder a person that they find to be amoral that you do not find to be amoral.

If he is innocent then could make SO much money on onlyfans (or he could if it wasn't for his reported back issues)

It is good that they have him in custody and he is alive and so it will be a fascinating trial, if it comes to that. From what I’ve heard, there is a ton of evidence pointing to him as the killer, but of course everyone is innocent until proven guilty. But regardless of all that whether he is the cold blooded murderer that he assumedly is or an innocent victims of mistaken identity, he is unquestionably a very hot guy! This will be an interesting case to follow!
