Thought I'd start a new thread about "whats new in your town"? Here in Seattle we got a new Ferris wheel on the waterfront. It is an exact replica of the one in London, but a little smaller. Each gondola can hold 6 people very comfortable. When we got there the line was huge and we thought we would be there for hours, but they load 5 gondolas at the same time (30 people) so the wait wasn't to bad. The views were just amazing!! The owner of the wheel a few years ago wanted to put it on a public waterfront park, but people protested against it so he waited and bought a downtown waterfront pier and put it up. Would be nice to have that kind of bank huh?

cool idea for thread. In san juan, they just implemented a new set of bike ways, marking streets and paths for bike right of way. The latest path goes right through the central tourism area along the ocean. Bike stops every few meters. Really nice for those that like to bike.

I am in Brooklyn Heights, and each summer more and more of the beautiful waterfront park called Brooklyn Bridge Park is becoming reality. I believe it is about a mile and a half long, and runs along the Brooklyn side of the East River, with the breathtaking view of the Statue of Liberty, The Brooklyn Bridge, and the lower Manhattan skyline including the new Freedom Towers on the site of the old World Trade Center.

The park is on the land where the old Brooklyn Piers were and each section of the park is named as the piers were 1-6. The new park also includes the Empire Fulton Ferry Park which has been between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges in DUMBO for a number of years. They are maintaining two buildings from the time of the civil war as park of the park.

This summer they put in a pool, and have outdoor "concerts with a view", and also show movies on a giant screen one night each week. It is a very cool almost unexpected beautiful piece of nature and calm in the middle of the bustling city. Here are a couple of pictures of this still being developed new park, that is a five minute walk from my door.

Right you are, Mikeyank!

You definitely should Peter. I've lived here my entire life, but I try not to ever take this city for granted. It is a great place.

Dear Mikeyank,

Those photos were beautiful. It is nice to see that NYC is continuing to develop even further and despite these hard times. This must be a much appreciated development in such a vast city! Please keep us posted of further developments!

Sincerely,

Stimpy

Indeed it does. Nice to see the brighter and cleaner parts of New York, rather than the run down areas that we used to see on tv and in films.

My town used to be really busy but nowadays all the big stores have moved to the outskirts leaving the main street full of junk food eating places and pound shops selling tack and shit. No longer do people stop and chat but those shops attract the chavs and lowlifes of society. And the town councillors call this progress

Well we have a strange mayors race coming up in November. A young openly Gay man, Carl De Maio , who is a right wing anti-union Republican who is being supported by all the leading homophobes in town is running against 70 year old liberal Democrat and openly straight Rep. Bob Filner who is being supported by most of the LGBT community including myself.

That is very ironic, and it proves the old adage that politics makes strange bedfellows.

Sounds fishy!

Now that is strange. That might be an interesting race to follow. How do you think it will turn out?

Can't tell yet. The CITY of San Diego as opposed to the rest of the COUNTY of San Diego is not as conservative as people think. Plus it is a Presidential election so a lot of people will show up to vote for Obama who will vote for Filner. On the other hand San Diego is hardly as liberal as LA or San Francsco- lots of Republicans here. De Maio is a very divisive figure people either love him or hate him and he has the backing of Ihe UT (the only daily newspaper) publisher Papa Doug Manchester, A leading opponent of Prop 8 in 2008. Filner is really well known- really liberal -maybe too liberal for San Diego- Right now I would rate it a tossup.

Meant to say Manchester was a leading SUPPORTER of Prop 8 The Anti Gay Marriage Ballot measure.

Haha Damn funny Jlipps4u you crack me up!!

Thanks peter, I'll trade you places!
Hmmm, come to think of it. Seems like I go to Seattle at least once per decade, and while this decade is still new, i think it has been 10 years since my last visit to Seattle. Must be time to go again! I love that city! BUt then I love rain and gloomy days.
