Several months ago I joined up for Moviepass. For $9.95 per month it sounded too good to be true. It probably was. For the first few months it was great. One free movie per day at just about any location you wanted to go to. Then, you couldn't see the same free movie twice. Then, you had to take a picture of your ticket stub right after purchase and text it back to them. Then, you had to pay an additional "surcharge" of sorts for seeing a movie during what they called "peak times." Now... It seems that Moviepass is on life support, if not already dead. No movie theaters in my area are listed on their app as having service.
I never did think that business model could hold out for long. Certainly not at that ridiculously low price. If you saw 3 movies per month, you more than made up for the cost of the subscription. I'm sure many people watched movies more often than that. Maybe if Moviepass or another company raised the monthly rate to $25 or more, they could make it work to a point of profitability. Of course unless I was wealthy I would never pay $40 a month or something like that, just to occasionally see movies. I do think the business model makes sense if the rate is both high enough to make a profit, and low enough to attract many lower to middle income customers. But can any company find that happy medium?
Does anyone know if they have pulled the plug on Moviepass? Or if they're about to?
