Ding. Ding. Ding! We have a winner.
I haven't seen the movie since I was a tiny little tyke in the late 60's, maybe early 70's. lol But it still made an impact to this day. Stowe would know the scene better than I. But as I remember it, just as today, most of the orphaned boys obviously had some very hard luck stories, with experiences you wouldn't wish on any child. The oldest of two boys (ages maybe 11 and 5) was recounting to Father Flanagan how they were destitute and he found out about the orphanage from somebody. He tells of how he had to carry his younger brother the final 2 miles (or some other ridiculous distance) in order to reach their destination. Father Flanagan said something like, "My heavens. That must have been really heavy to carry him so far." The older boy humbly replied, "He ain't heavy, Father; he's my brother."
