Many forumites were disgusted and thought it was gross to see his hand on the boy's cocks, but I responded very favorably to those scenes, as David was doing exactly what I would have wanted to do, had I been in his situation.

I could wax poetic for days about David's attributes, but his being a less than perfect looking man himself, without a great speaking voice or vocabulary all helped to make him in my mind the perfect every man to represent us, and to make me believe that I was witnessing reality and not a slick porn studio production.

Just like people complained endlessly here when Johnny first started as director and his hands got into the shots. I'm not sure it's such great advice to DC unfortunately!

One thing I found really upsetting in DC's directorial porn debut was the editing choppiness of it all. Usually editing points in porn means that another set up was needed so models could get a breather (who can fuck straight for two hours without a break IRL if not in "altered states"?) and it highlights the start-and-stop nature of a porn shoot (any shoot really). Meaning that it makes it obvious that what we are seeing is not "real" sex and the fake nature of porn comes barging in like a 800 pound gorilla.

It might be necessary to "chop up" reality to make it more exciting for documentaries or reality series or just to fit all the messages in a commercial but sex is interesting enough that you don't have to help it along in editing unless something happened during the shooting.

DC seems real proud of his shooting/editing techniques (which is a real plus in some bts segments) so I wonder how much he is willing to compromise his artistic vision to better showcase the porn and not his virtuoso editing tricks.

But Johnny's "floaty" camera could get tiring as well in high dosage or when it moved for no reason other than he was bored with what was happening in his viewfinder (who can blame him when you've had such a long career?). When the models perform well (so, cough, not just yell or moan like a deranged straight porn starlet like Vadim Black does, cough), the sex is sufficient in itself and does not need any visual pizzazz. Focus on the models' performance not the technical side would be my final advice. Just my two cents.

By the way, aren't you a Jimmy Johnson fan? What do you think of the teasing that a competitor site is doing for an upcoming scene of their 'Top to Bottom' series where some Queer Me Now blog posters have guessed Jimmy would be bottoming for Colby Jansen in the near future? I love me some Colby Jansen!

I fully concur with Mike comments. You look at today's vids and I can tell you what we will see:
1. Chat
2. Undress
3. Kissing
4. Sucking
5. Fucking

Almost like the same old same old. The intrigue for David's time was the slow bribing to get models to do something more and their reactions to those suggestions. WE never knew (and sometimes David did not know) what the final outcome would be if it would even happen. The other key factor in David's filming was surprise and spontaneity. Go back and view such vids as Ricky and William, Eric and Ross, Shane Tank and Gino, or episode #1 Alex and Chris. David himself was surprised hell, imagine how we all felt. In one example (Tank and Gino) David stated, I don't smoke but I could use one now (or something like that). You know it is good when the Director is shocked at what just happened. You know it was not planned or scripted. The conning of a "straight" guy doing something "Gay" was the catch. We really don't see that today. It appears everything is scripted, almost to the point of the "i's" dotted and "t's" crossed. Mind you, this is not meat as a criticism, but the difference between the "Golden Age" and today. You still produce some damn excellent shows. Just not as surprising as before. I think some of us might like to see more of that. Not ever scene, but perhaps when new comers are introduced and learning the robes. I hope this helps you out

I have great memories of David. I have visited him on several occasions. He is truly a warm, funny and generous person to be around. He truly has a heart of gold. As I mentioned in a previous post, I am looking forward to meeting with him and Eddie next month when I'm back in Florida.

You and Johnnie are getting closer to the "ORIGINAL". I appreciate all you do to hear us out to make Broke Straight Boys the one and only place to go.

No matter how scripted or fake David's own scenes were, (or perhaps better said, "degree of fantasy" implied) there was still a sense of spontaneity and unknown for the audience as to how far the "straight" models would be willing to go. That was very hot and intriguing in its own way.

As to what I think is DChrisdtopher's main point of asking...Could this "Golden Age" formula be replicated today with the same level of success?...my honest answer is, I don't know. Except for the very young new adult viewers to internet porn, the rest of adult viewers are much more jaded now than even four years ago. Let alone six or more. They see through the holes of shaky plotlines. They'll go along with a certain amount of fantasy to be entertained. But they won't fall for an obvious dog and pony show. While David's formula worked very well at the time I just wonder if the porn audience itself has changed too much since then.

Speaking as only one Broke Straight Boys viewer, my enjoyment and appreciation of the reluctant straight boy being coaxed and bribed into having gay sex was nearly ruined by Jimmy Johnson. He took it to such a farcical extreme in his on-set demeanor of loathing gay sex and acting like it was torture for him, being rude to his partners, being selfish in bed, all but refusing to suck dick...it just turned me off to that genre. If he had acted that way for only a few scenes, it might have been great. But it went on for a whole year. Even though he got slightly better at the end of a year, for me it was a matter of too little too late. (Both for Jimmy and the genre.) Even after Jimmy was finally gone, the next few models who came along and played what was once (for me) the much enjoyable role of very reluctant straight guy...I would just become annoyed and concerned with them rather than intrigued. I would literally think to myself, "Oh no! Not another Jimmy!!"

For a good long while he poisoned the well for me when it came to being able to appreciate very reluctant new models. I still wanted them to be straight, wanted some hesitation and awkwardness in the beginning, but not taken to an extreme. And certainly I didn't want it to go on for more than 5 or 6 scenes.

Of course newer members to the site won't have that historical baggage clouding their enjoyment with whatever formula the site chooses to use.

This is all great stuff! While there are varying ideals on what was so good back in the beginning of Broke Straight Boys, it does give us a bit of insight into what you would like to see. The comments about David (whom I've never met) are interesting as is the whole idea of "baiting" a straight guy. There's a science to it. Back in the day, it was all new so it was easier to get a straight guy to do things. Now, with internet porn being what it is, these guys are a bit more hip to what they are getting into and what they will and won't do. I personally spoke with a straight friend of mine a few days ago (who didnt know that I worked for Blumedia) and discussed an article that his wife read on Cosmopolitan.com about straight guys doing gay porn and that they had mentioned a site called Broke Straight Boys I was both amused and interested about what he thought about it. Overall, the industry itself has evolved and keeping up with the times can be both frustrating and taxing. One amateur site is shooting in 4k even though there is no way for the average consumer to view 4k (at least right now). We are truly listening to what you all have to say and love that we can get this type of input on our product. Stay tuned, some exciting things are happening right now. While we can't please everyone, we can offer a top notch product that is both unique and relevant. Not to mention creating some amazingly hot scenes to get you off. Again, we are listening. Be patient with us as we continue to grow and evolve.

Tampa, I hear what you are saying and agree with you about Jimmy, with no disrespect to his fans here. You are also right about how will the new members react to a change like this. But lets remember when this site decided to do bareback. There was all sorts of feedback on both sides of the issue. Some members might even have left. While new members are not fully up to speed on the "golden age", it may be possible to see if it might be possible to make it back, not exactly as in the past, but in part.

For blue media it might be a small risk to try. How? They COULD do some shoots with who new models who have done oral only, and then team them together for their second shoot. Just like in the "golden age". Then the director can set up the expectation of now we want more like we want you to suck dick. Based on the response, the director would see what needs to be done to go get them to do this. Perhaps after they get into that he can introduce fucking/kissing, etc. Similar to Broke Straight Boys 1, but not exactly the same. Or perhaps they could use an experience model to help do the baiting to go the next step(s). It would be interesting if they would agree to try a few scenes this way and see what the reaction of the membership is.

I do think we do need to see more newbies (first timers to under 5 scenes) vs. the "regulars". At what point is Broke Straight Boys no long Broke or ??? When you look at models like Paul, Damien, Kayden, Tyler, Brandon, etc. at what point are they no long Broke Straight Boys and now are "porn stars". This would not just apply to these current models and I am sure others could be added to the list) but for some from David's time (Tyler, Diesal, CJ, and others I can't think of, etc.).

I am not at all suggesting that models like Paul, Damien, Tyler, Kayden, Brandon, Blake (Bennett) be eliminate. Perhaps they can be more spaced out to allow more new models to get their teeth wet amongst other things).

Would be nice to hear from others. If not, perhaps we can call each other and have our own private discussion and let the forum move on.

bless your heart johnny, I don't think I could ever be normal with my brain anyway it's more fun living in the land of dan where anything goes. Tyler could never be done he's to strong for that I just wish that people used weighing scales when writing their comments that way everything would be balanced and not just negative.
