  • One suspect in the shooting was injured and was being treated.

A shooter opened fire in a gay nightclub late Saturday, killing five people and wounding 18 in the latest mass shooting to befall the country in a year in which anti-gay rhetoric has been amped up among extremists.

Lt. Pamela Castro of the Colorado Springs Police Department said police received a report of a shooting at Club Q at 11:57 p.m.

Castro said there was one suspect who was injured and was being treated. She said it was not immediately clear whether the attacker had been shot by officers. She said the FBI was on the scene and assisting in the case.

The police department tweeted that it planned an 8 a.m. news conference at its operations center.

Club Q is a gay and lesbian nightclub that features a “Drag Diva Drag Show” on Saturdays, according to its website.

In addition to the drag show publicized on the website, Club Q’s Facebook page said the night’s planned entertainment included a “punk and alternative show” preceding a birthday dance party, with an “all ages brunch” scheduled to begin at noon on Sunday.

“Club Q is devastated by the senseless attack on our community,” the club posted on Facebook. It said its prayers were with victims and families, and “We thank the quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate attack.”

Colorado Springs is a city of about 480,000 located about 70 miles (112 kilometers) south of Denver that is home to the U.S. Air Force Academy. The city has long been an epicenter of American evangelicalism. Focus on the Family, a prominent evangelical Christian ministry, is based in Colorado Springs.
In November 2015, three people were killed and eight wounded at a Planned Parenthood clinic in the city when authorities say a man opened fire because he wanted to wage “war” on the clinic because it performed abortions.
The motive behind Saturday’s shooting was not immediately known but it brought back memories of the 2016 massacre at the the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, that killed 49 people. And it occurred in a state that has experienced several notorious mass killings, including at Columbine High School, a movie theater in a Denver suburb in 2012 and a Boulder supermarket last year.
In June, 31 members of the neo-Nazi group Patriot Front were arrested in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and charged with conspiracy to riot at a Pride event. Experts warned that extremist groups could see anti-gay rhetoric as a call to action.
The previous month, a fundamentalist Idaho pastor told his small Boise congregation that gay, lesbian and transgender people should be executed by the government, which lined up with similar sermons from a Texas fundamentalist pastor.
There have been 523 mass killings since 2006 resulting in 2,727 deaths as of Nov. 19, according to The Associated Press/USA Today database on mass killings in the U.S.

I woke up early this morning to this alert on my phone. I thought I was dreaming, reminding me of the horrific Pulse Massacre in Orlando in 2016. How tragic that in 2022 where the gay community has achieved almost universal support of same sex marriage and how we often talk on this forum about how the attitude has changed among young people today about sexuality, and how open kids can be today and how accepting America has become about gays and straights and everyone in between all living in harmony and now this…….

I also thought about two other things, how yesterday here in New York City two young men were arrested in Pennsylvania Station, with a hunting knife and an assault rifle and one had a Nazi arm band. Apparently they had made on line threats to synagogues in New York City. The other thought was how yesterday I was in Sheridan Square in Greenwich Village at the Stonewall National Monument and how proud I was of from where we’ve come, only to be figuratively knocked back down with the news of the hate in Colorado and in Penn Station.

How terribly sad and scary………

Just the latest in an endless series of such attacks.

So awful. I've been to that club once or twice when I lived in Colorado. Just brings back the memories of Pulse which was such a great and friendly place as well.
Sadly this is the world we live in, technology improves, humans don't!

Not again! The sowers of hatred are reaping their harvest.

In the recently ended election cycle, the Republican Party, not private individuals or groups associated with the Republican Party, spent 50 million dollars in television adverts attacking trans children and drag queens. Republican political candidates referred to gay people, especially drag queens, as grooming children. Recently I was approached by a young man working for one of the local Republican candidates . He wanted to talk to me about that candidate. I told him that after the election of 2016, I would never again vote for any Republican for any political office.

Sadly, much of what you say rings true, juanjo.

I'm just devastated and so sad. It's a shame that all these years after Columbine, Sandy Hook, Pulse, and now Club Q we have done fuck all for gun control in the USA. We have done nothing for mental health in this country. I'm horrifically pissed off at our leadership, they all should be ashamed of themselves.

I can only offer my deepest condolences to those affected by this senseless tragedy. I wish I could hug you all in person ❤️

Yes. This whole story gave me flashbacks to the Pulse massacre. We can hope and pray that this might be the last mass shooting at a gay club. But that might be hopelessly naive. I hope that no more victins of Club Q die in the hospital.

I was texting with one of my boys Jordan Thomas yesterday. He was telling me that he knew just about all the victims killed or injured for over 10 years.
He said he had to work that night or he might of been there. The hotel he works at is right down the street from the bar and he heard all sirens, but never
thought that this could happen there!!

He needs your support so very much. i qm sure you will give it to him.

Kudos to the two Club patrons who took the shooter down, immobilized him and stopped the shooting until the police arrived! They saved many lives, but even the loss of one life is one too many.

Agree.

They are definitely heros!

At my work we are required to go through active shooter training every few years to be prepared for the worst.

Mass shootings are a daily occurrence as yet another one occurred just now IIn Virginia (Wahlmart).
