Speaking of Cheers, I want to share a Short Studddandy type of memory. During the early days of the Aids crisis, I lived in DALLAS and I went with a few friends to protest George the first, as I call daddy Bush, because the government was doing little to nothing to help because it was Queers dying! He was addressing a group of the religious right at the convention center so it was the perfect place to protest with all of those hypocrites! Anyway a group of people had drawn police like outlines of dead bodies all over the side walk and placed a single votive candle in each body outline representing our brothers that had died. The DALLAS police on horse back were lined up in a huge line protecting the place and keeping the crowd back. They looked like Queen Elizabeth’s gaurds with very stoic stares. I really had no idea they had so many mounted officers. Anyway it was a wild assorted crowd. A black preacher was preaching there was pro and anti abortion people and then there was a large crowd of gays. Everyone was very well behaved. I hadn’t ever been to this kind of protest and I was so proud of our guys. The black preacher was supporting tolerance. Unlike those self righteous ass holes inside to hear Bush. Anyway there was a group of lesbians who were leading cheers and The Whole gay crowd was yelling them out in unison. My very favorite one cracked up the DALLAS PD and it was wonderful seeing those stoic mounted cops crack. The cheer directed at the police was: “We are here! We are Queer! And so are some of You.” It was fabulous seeing those cops smile and I’ll never forget it. Meanwhile they snuck Bush in and out of the back. I don’t think he saw a thing but we were there and orderly and we got through to those cops.
