Attempting to be wittily acerbic, cleverly ironic as well as harmlessly amusing in a post on an internet thread with a variegated membership, while at the same time being relevant and interesting, often ends up in either the typical "I was only joking", eventually followed by a Glenn Beck "If I've offended anyone..." or a righteous "some assholes have no sense of humor..." or, most distressingly, a flipping of the skirts as the "misunderstood" poster exits stage right, there to lurk till she (or he) resurfaces in the discourse, sometimes with a disclaimer (the part I like best).

As tacky as they are, and blatant, and ripe with overkill, the table of smilies that the good Stephane has provided us with can sometimes defuse at the outset a post that isn't meant to be hostile but where the author recognizes that there could be nuances subject to misinterpretation.

Cowardly yes, but at least a gesture of cringing civility in a group like ours, where a whole bunch of posters are both of above average intelligence and at the very least moderately amusing in their observations, but where experience shows us that hurried contributions to the forum can sometimes backfire. And there are enough of these little gifs to moderate anyone's bile enough to keep the banter moving.

I think we can safely say that a small conversation which has long ago been settled by pm has been elevated to the status of global crisis replete with rows of slimmy faces and miss k's littany of messages that will not open (I assume, that in itself is meant to say something). Dear little Shelley Duvall said, "Take events in your life seriously, take work seriously, but don't take yourself seriously, or you'll become affected, pompous and boring." Bob, that Joey bosom is amazingly beautiful, as you've confirmed by your use of 3 of the best smilies as emphasis. Since the texts we post sometimes get us in trouble, maybe we could use smilies exclusively. Stephane would have to add a few more, but with the right mix and enough of them we could communicate exclusively in electronic hieroglyphs.
