Star Trek fans

My roommate is a big sci-fi fan. He has seen every episode that Star Trek made, plus the movies. He is also big on Star Wars and the Empire Strikes Back as well as Battlestar Galactica and others.
I will have to watch for those glasses and then start collecting them for him. He doesn't even know about the new movie or promotion.
Gary

Gary, you are a sweet man to do that for him...:001_rolleyes:

Ill do the same for Peter over here.... the gay world would not survive without us so called sweet guys lol

Even with our odd evil streaks

I always liked the original, DS-9, Voyager and TNG. In that order. Star Trek phase II shows some promise but it's too early to say. Enterprise doesn't even make the list. For obvious reasons... I liked TNG. It had some great episodes. What I didn't care for was the arrogance of the characters of Picard and especially Riker.

I hate to sink to moronic comparisons such as who would you like to have beer with...or a cup of coffee. (I'm not a drinker myself) But here goes. If Riker showed up in character he would be acting very self important and wishing he was spending time with someone more worthy of his company. He would suffer through a brief social chat with one of us mere mortals and probably try to turn it into a "teaching" session where he would impart some of his wisdom and experience to us.

If we had a cup of coffee with Picard in character he would be acting and feeling much the same way as Riker. He would just be more socially tactful in attempting to hide it. He would make a point of feigning interest in us and our lives by asking a few personal questions. And we would be expected to feel grateful that he had given us some of his very valuable time. I'd have more fun (and learn more) talking to a computer like Data than either of those bozos.

In comparison to the other series who wouldn't love to have a chat with Kirk, Spock, Tom Paris, Janeway, Cpt. Cisco, Dax, Dr. Bashir, Nana Visitor, (What's her freakin character's name?) Duh... LOL...Gerrick the Caudasian spy, etc.

In fairness I would like to chat with Geordie as well as Data. There were characters in various episodes of TNG that I'd love to meet and talk to. But as for the regular TNG characters those are the only two with whom I felt a real connection.

Tampa, Tampa, Tampa. Where is your mind? What about Wesley, Guinan, and the most mixed up one of all, Lt. Broccoli....., er Barkley? BTW...Major Kira comes to mind for Nana Visitor? Not to mention Odo! or Quark!

Wesley needed to be shot, Guinan bitch slapped, and Barkely was asking to be pushed out an air lock. I loved Laxwana after Rodenberry passed. It was like he was holding the character back and only when he wasn't there to 'protect' his beloved was she given scripts that showed just how great an actress she was...

When it comes to Trek my favorites in order: The Original, Next Generation, DS-9, Voyager. I disliked Voyager only because the whole premise of the show was flawed, from the first episode. If you remember that first one, this is where Voyager is thrown into the Delta quadrant some 75,000 light years from home. It was to take them 75 years to return home. Now go back to the original series. When the Enterprise was taken over by the Kelvans from the Andromeda Galaxy they modified her engines to do Warp 11 and travel 2.2 million light years in less than 300 years. Doing some simple math, the enterprise would have been home in under 10 years.

Tampa as for Riker and Picard, I think you might be a bit harsh on them. Keep in mind they are military trained and are the top two commanders of the ship. I think that is something to be expected from them. Jayman, any comments here? I would agree that is shows more in Riker.

Wesley was OK, if you can live with a boy genius, however, the actor Wil Wheaton is an ass-hole. I saw him at a convention and during the question and answer period, someone asked him if they could give him a HUG. His response was: "I don't do HUGS". I have seen dozens of celebrities on stage and no one was as arrogant as he was. I remember Mark Hamil being on stage and a guy ask if he could HUG him. He had no problem accommodating the fan (damn why didn't I think of that). Marina Sirtis at one convention stay for 8 hours to give everyone in attendance an autograph. So I'm no fan of Wil.

And if you are going to tale to someone over coffee, I'll take Scotty. I had lunch with him when he did a personal appearance at the store I work at. What a nice gentleman he was. He even autographed some dozen items I had.

It is too bad they did not come up with another Trek TV series taking place 15 or so years after NG. It would have been nice to see Captain Riker in the Captains Chair of the Enterprise.

I'm not sure, but I think someone was under the impression I was touting wil wheaton et al by mentioning their characters? I wanted only to get Tampa's opin on them as I thought they were all more than minor characters on TNG. My Bad!

Saw Wil at Disneyworld in 1988. BIG BLIP on the Gaydar. I understand he's married and obnoxious now.

M&M

You are so right. Guinan came to mind after I posted. I'd love to meet Guinan. The episode where Data's head is found in the cave is one of the best of TNG. But there were many great episodes. l liked Odo's character but in social setting he's too much of a stuffed shirt...or a chair, or a tree... I also thought of Wesley but didn't want to give people the wrong idea. lol

I was a bit harsh on them but keep in mind I was referring to how our personalities would mesh if we met in person. No inferrence was intended towards the actors themselves. Their characters were entertaining to watch.

As for Wesley I totally agree. I liked the character but in this case though the actor had alot of issues. I'm sure you know the whole story as to why he left the show. He really shot himself in the foot with that move. When he made a later cameo episode after leaving, he came back looking awful and having put on a bunch of weight. His tween/twink looks were all gone. In the transporter room scene on his "arrival" I could sense the high tension and almost borderline hostility towards him from the rest of the actors. It was a shame . The impetuousness of youth...

Actually, I don't know the whole story.

Do tell.

I read an actual interview with him years ago. He was riding high on the success of TNG when the cast of TNG and Original S.T. did a convention aboard a cruise ship. He look over the balcony at all the convention trekkers lining up to board the ship in full Star Trek regalia. He apparently was never a big fan of doing the conventions anyway. He said that at that moment with "all the arrogance that only a 16 y/o could muster" he thought to himself that he was better than all that. He looked at Shatner and the others at that point as being rather pathetic in submitting themselves to all that nonsense at their age. He decided that if he stayed with the show that that would be his destiny too. He decided that he did not want that kind of life and future for himself. He wanted to be a "serious" actor and did not want to get typecast. He was sure he could do better than TNG.

At that point he decided that the best thing he could do for his career would be to leave the show. So he quit of his own volition. Then his "career" hit a wall. The type of twink look that he had was no longer so much in vogue with the studios at that point. Job offers were next to non existent. He said that almost immediately he started having financial problems. Then the bill collectors were calling him regularly and hounding him. He went through hell trying to find acting work and stay ahead of his mounting debts. For a teenager it was a harsh reality check.

His co-workers at TNG knew enough of his reasons for leaving the show. They rightly enough took offense to his condescension towards the show that had made him even more famous after Stand By Me. When he came back to do the episode where he had gotten into trouble at Starfleet Academy he looked awful as I had said. He was broke and in debt. He had put on a lot of weight in the face and he was being worn down by life in the real world. In the opening scene the actors were supposed to be welcoming back the beloved young man that they had sent off to school. But as I said the actors had a hard time pulling off the warm and fuzzy welcoming reception. I had not understood completely why there appeared to be so much tension in those scenes from Troy and others until I read his interview at a later time. So that's the Wil Wheaton story.

Have you guys read any of the reviews for the new movie Star Trek? It looks like it will be very good. I hope it can live up to the hype. Something tells me that it will. It's amazing that over 40 years after the original series that we are still getting enjoyment out of the franchise.

Ok guys, I'm lost again! What do the three letters, TNG stand for?
I did read a little snip bit via a link that AOL news had on the new Star Wars movie. Sounds as if it will be a good movie. Let's hope so.

Tampa:

I agree. It's amazing that we still yearn for that world envisioned by Gene Roddenberry. What does that say about our society?

Love ya!
