Pets!!!

...yet ONE MORE!!!

...and if that last story wasnt enough, I want to share the (TRUE) story of when I was in 6th grade and my Male Blue Parakeet, named 'Enos', (for those of you 'chronologically blessed enough to remember a show called "The Dukes of Hazzard" There was a sheriff on it named 'Enos'?)

Anyway, Enos was quite the bird, he liked to bathe, eat chicken soup, (NO LIE)! So one day after pleading w/ ther 'parentals', we got 'Enos' a 'Daisy'- a female parakeet, to make little birdies!

Poor Daisy would sit on the perch in the same Cage Kafig on the complete opposite side of the Cage Kafig. After a few months, poor Daisy went to birdy heaven out of loneliness.

So then I was outside one day and there happened to be a parakeet that was on the telephone wire, I thought, "Hot Damn!!" So I went in and got Enos and the Cage Kafig. Long story shorter, I brought the Cage Kafig w/ the bird on top inside. then opened the door. HE went right for the food.

Enos took notice, and started to make his move! I thought! Poor Crystal! (a Boy) Enos would not leave him alone, kissing him, and preening him for the next (however many )years it was!!

So....you tell ME...NATURE or Nurture, or a product of environment????? LOL

Great stories Bob. I'll never look at a flock of birds the same again.

Btw, what is the name of your ventriloquist turkey drumstick stealing cat?

"It's impossible to replace a lost love. There isn't another that can be just like who you had before. Everyone is an individual. That is especially true of pets."

Thank you Lovelumps for a clear and concise statement that goes to the heart of the matter. Speaking as Markymark for a moment, I have had the great fortune to have shared the love of many different creatures, among them six dogs, 2 cats, a few wild birds, four opossums, two skunk babies and a half grown raccoon, whose need for care while injured, brought them to my door, many fish and turtles, and even several rats and mice. I freely admit that the ones who most tugged at my heart were the four legged critters. Wild, tame, rescued, adopted, they each gave freely of their own special type of love or gratitude. Each in it's time has left me, but each also gave me memories and joy for the time shared with me. Each one has an individual place in my heart, a place of love, warmth and remembrance of a unique individual.

That's a lot of pets you've had, Markymark. You are very obviously a nurturing person. I have to say though, that I can't imagine having a skunk in my house, let alone 2! And a raccoon? Courageous, too!

We currently have 2 dogs, Macallan and Porter, who I mentioned, a cat named Cosmo, and my youngest son has a Corn snake named Athena. We've had lots of fish over the years as well.

Right now I'm waiting for a sign that my Macallan girl is done with this life. It's very difficult. I think it's just a matter of days. I'd hope that I'm wrong, that she has more time, but she's just wasting away. She doesn't seem to be in pain, but she's not eating. It's hard to watch. She's been a wonderful companion, cranky girl that she is.

Macallan

Laura,

Oh, I didn't realise from your earlier post how poorly Macallan was. I once explained to a friend I believe that while people (and pets for that matter)pass away, their life lives on with people they have come into contact with as such relationships are a part of who we are. Please have my best wishes for your family including Macallan.

I should have mentioned that the skunk babies, as well as the opossum babies were rescued from the rubble of the basement of a house that I had arranged to have torn down. It had been empty for years, and either the mothers were away hunting, or frightened by the noise of the tractor, either way, I became their mother until they could be safely released into protected nature areas.

I am sorry to hear about Macallan. I hope her last days are filled with warm memories for both of you.

Thanks, Undie... I appreciate that. She has been a wonderful member of our family and will, indeed, live on in our happy memories of her.

Lovelumps, your dog is amazing, the memories she has given you will lift your spirits always.

I don't even know where to begin about pets, there have been so many. When I was a kid, I had a hamster that slept on my pillow, then a dog that learned to pull the rope under my swing and would pull it back as far as it could, and sit down, so I was hung sieways in the air. As a teenager I had a cat, that would destroy anything that belonged to my "terrible" little sister.

Now I have a GIANT dog, that is the biggest chicken ever, and a 16 year old cat.

Dearest Laura,

I trust that Macallan is resting nicely and not suffering unduely. Furthermore, I hope Macallan is feeling the kindness only you and your family can provide in these remaining days.

Wishing everybody at your home many blessings and am hoping that many more blessings will follow to guide you all through these times. But as her nature was both loving and joyful, make her passing a statement of how she lived.

Sincerely,

Stimpy

Stimpy,

Thank you so much for your kind words. My baby girl, Macallan, 12, went to doggie heaven this morning. It was hard for all of us to make the decision to end her suffering, but it was the right thing to do. Our vet recounted happy memories of her with us and was gentle and respectful during the process. She will be missed, but we had a wonderful life with her. The boys are sad, as are we. I have visions of her chasing squirrels and climbing higher and higher up taller trees than she ever imagined wherever it is that she is now. I'll miss my little Smacky girl.

Dearest Laura,

I am so very sorry about your loss. However, not having Macallan suffering is the kindest thing you could have done. Now, it is time to bid her good bye knowing you did your best without any regrets. Surely, she is happy once again being freed of this health burden and is chasing those squirrels and climbing higher and higher up taller trees than she ever imagined.

Sincerely,

Stimpy

I'm very sorry to hear that terrible news, Laura. I'm very sad for you and your family. I can still remember the day that my brother and I made the decision to end the suffering for our family dog too. It is very difficult.

Thank you, Mike. It is difficult, but it was harder watching her suffer. Making the decision was the hardest part. A lot of tears were shed here.

Laura,
I am so sorry to hear about the tremendous loss your family is suffering through. I have had to make that same decision a couple of times, so I know the anguish it caused you and your husband.
My prayers are with you, and I wish you and your children the best, through the coming days, as you all deal with the loss and move forward.
