A young guy home sick in bed and feeling miserable. Probably the only bright spot in his life at that moment is not having to go to school. Then there's the constant daily worry about his much loved older brother who is deployed in a war zone. What could possibly cheer him up during such a down and vulnerable time? Maybe a total surprise like this.

I am waiting for the Duke - Florida game at Madison Square Garden to start on ESPN and it is part of the Jimmy V Classic at the Garden. Jim Valvano was the North Carolina State coach who went on to be an analyst on ESPN when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 1993 and he started the Jimmy V Foundation for cancer research. Before the Duke game begins, ESPN showed Jimmy V's inspirational speech at the ESPY awards with his body riddled with cancer, shortly before he died and he delivered an inspirational, funny and moving speech that I'd highly recommend you watch. I've seen it dozens of times and I'm still moved by it.

Duke won the game which was good for me, but the images and words of Jimmy V were played throughout the night and maybe some day the dreaded disease will be cured.
