Sublimation comes from Psych 101. As applied to the discussion on this thread, it is males raised and conditioned to be straight suppress or sublimate their same sex attraction into socially sanctioned outlets, so they can insist and actually believe that that they are straight, while somewhat accommodating the suppressed same sex attraction. We have discussed sublimation a lot over on the College Athletes thread, particularly in regard to college wrestling where societal approval and the rules of that sport permit and encourage intimate male to male physical contact, which potentially could get one arrested if he walked up to a strange boy on a street corner and grabbed him in places where college wrestlers grab each other all the time, and thereafter still claim that they are totally straight. In the case of Mikeyank's post, he was in effect applying the concept of sublimation to his younger straight employees acting out musical fads and forms of apparel illustrated by the old Village People group, making the point that they were in effect acting out in a gay manner without realizing it. Hope that helps re the sublimation concept.

I agree with KG to a certain extent and with certain guys. However gay men often project our own way of thinking onto all straight guys. With the young straight guys who worked for me, my thoughts are that gay men often try to emulate masculine images such as construction workers or body builders. And there are good looking straight guys like the heavy metal stars who like to go shirtless do it to impress the ladies.
With the ollege wrestlers, I think KG might be right. lol. That is some very gay stuff going on in those matches with crotch and ass grabbing and spontaneous erections too.

Thanks to all who have joined in on this sublimation discussion. Sublimation is only necessary because our society conditions all children that they must be straight in their sexual orientation whether they are or not. Social conditioning is a powerful force, particularly in a young male's teenaged years, where social acceptance of the herd becomes all important. The power of these social forces is such that many who turn out to be gay sincerely believe that they are straight as they start out in their youthful sexual life, and most but not all sublimation is subconscious. In sexual development I went from straight to bi to gay phases in that order. As a football player in high school and throughout college, 100% of my sex acting out was heterosexual. Yet I was very much aware of my same sex attraction but felt it unthinkable to act out upon. While I did not have all the societal approved grabs, gropes and holds that wrestling did, football and most sports have one - the societal approval to pat a teammate or opponent on the butt, so I made sure to pat all of my more attractive teammates and opponents on the ass as much as possible. After taking my Psych 101 course in college and learning about sublimation, whenever I was attracted to a hot male classmate, I would think to myself: "Sublimate, sublimate!" But post college, the power of social conditioning began to decrease, I spent a few years partaking of the sexual favors of both genders and finally evolved to accepting that I just liked dudes best. But I was the minority having some conscious sublimation. For the overwhelming majority, science teaches us that it is subconscious (yes, meaning even obnoxious homophobes can have it and be so inclined). As for Mikeyank's observation that some gay guys project onto straight guys, of course, that kind of reverse gaydar is the case in many instances as well.

KG your explanation is for me very interesting and right on even when you have parents like I had that would approve of you what ever your sexual identity was it is society that was the cause for me. There was 1 good thing however that came out of this my 3 sons.
