Here's a little story for you, about a time in Paris, long ago.

I was on the way to the Louvre, on foot, with a cute little Russian friend. He is quite fluent in French - mine is shamefully bad, for a Canadian, and I am embarrassed to speak it, in public.

Just as we arrived at the Louvre, I spied the cutest, hottest, little brunet police-cadet, in his cute képi, right on the steps of the Louvre. I was overcome. Immediately, I asked him: "Monsieur, je suis tellement profiter de Paris, mais je ne parle pas très bien le français, et je ne lis pas les cartes très bien. Monsieur, pourriez-vous s'il vous plaît dites-moi, comment je pourrais trouver du Louvre?" ("Sir, I am really loving Paris, but I don't speak French very well. . . sir, could you please tell me, how I might find my way to the great museum of the Louvre?")

He scowled a very cute scowl, and said (or rather, sort of GRUNTED) to me: "Monsieur, êtes-vous aveugle? Vous êtes juste à la porte du Louvre. Tu es arrivé!" ("Dude - are you BLIND? You're already f***ing HERE!")

My Russian friend laughed his ass off. (I literally had to pick him up, off the pavement.) And our friend who was hosting us, said at dinner: "Ah yes, 'A' - your French is SO BAD. . . you will never speak it, with US. But if there is a cute brunet policeman, next to you. . . somehow, all those long-forgotten lessons, from your bad Canadian schooldays, FLOOD your memory, like the taste of one of Proust's madeleines"
