I look at Broke Straight Boys as being very different from typical porn sites, where viewers look at the performers as being those "figures of fantasy" as you say. I couldn't agree more! I've worked with all kinds of people with mental illness and more often than not, I saw too many who were so "prejudged" by society as a whole, that they were never able to find work and maintain stability. I think that we get to know who these models really are. This just makes him even more "real" to me. I dare say, Tate is not by any means the only model who may have "some sort of mental illness" or social issues even! They may present differently, but it's not always drug induced! (BB)

I don't fault you at all for your feelings on what makes a good fantasy for you Kelly. That's all a matter of personal preference.

For myself I was actually pleased that Tate used the intro as part public service announcement. I thought it was pretty gutsy and brave of him to be so open about something that other people carry as a hidden badge of shame and fear. He talked about how his father has the same chemical imbalances, doesn't deal with it (or likely doesn't agree to medication) and it has cost him everything he tried to build up in life. He's also destroyed his most important interpersonal relationships with his former friends and his own family.

Our Mike Robbins (MHRIP) had a severe form of bipolar disorder and did not deal with it well. He didn't like the side effects of the meds they prescribed him so he preferred not to take them (or at least not as much as they prescribed him) and to self-medicate with pot. Then in spite of all the warnings, he would still sometimes drink alcohol. His relationships with his family, friends and coworkers suffered. I'm sure he had a tough time finding real-life jobs outside of video work. Ultimately, he didn't make it.

Tate on the other hand is following professional advice, doing well and finding his own way in life. I really respect that!

KellyG, I used to try very hard not to allow myself to "form any type of emotional attachment" to models I viewed on this site. No favorite models, and I looked at every model individually. Then, it happened! I started to gain a different perspective of them as we got to know more about the models as people and not just "objects of lust". I found it hard to watch certain models in a scene, especially if "it didn't look like they were having a good time, or looked like they were uncomfortable" to me. I could still "support the models I liked" but, in my mind, I had to feel they were "okay". So, I think I understand where you're coming from on this. I am sure that, if they didn't want to be here and do what they were doing, they would make that decision and we probably would not see them perform here any more.
