There is a big difference between Eddie and Syrian Thomas, not only physical but also obvious differences in life experiences. Where they go, what they do, how their family interacts, all aspects of their lives are highly influenced by the church. And if it looks like you are wandering off the correct path, a couple of concerned "Elders" will stop by for a visit and a serious discussion. It is entirely possible that Syrian Thomas is or at least, was that naive at one time.

Back in feudal times, my aunt and uncle lived in Mesa, AZ, which was overwhelmingly Mormon at the time. My three male cousins attended schools that were majority Mormon. Just watched the post scene interview during which David awarded both boys $1,000 each.
