Who's working and what jobs do you do

I am a full time student working on my Psychology degree. I also work for a large grocery chain in the evenings and on the weekends. I also volunteer with a literacy program near my college. I do not get much "free time" but when I do Broke Straight Boys is my release from the real world.

Sorry to be nosey but is this an adult degree you are doing or are you like me, in your mid twenties. I was fortunate to get an apprenticeship which lasted 4 years. This was 2.5 days working on the job and 2.5 days a week at college. I did a bit of bar work to supplement my income but it didnt last long because I ended up being too tired to concentrate at college, so I ditched the bar work.

I currently work a full time job as a salesman visiting various businesses throughout the New York City area. One of the perks is that I start my day at my own time, and while I need to end up my days in the office, it leaves me lot's of time on my own, so I can "forum" before work, during my lunch breaks and when I arrive home in the evening.

That's cool. Do you drive to these businesses or take public transport ? Just asking because I know you live in the big apple.

Hey Jon

Only a young fella here so have plenty of years left in me before retirement. I am a Medical Officer working in Country NSW. My essential training background is in Accident & Emergency and Anaesthetics. But at the moment I have taken a break for the last couple of years from the training programme to locum and earn a bit of decent cash.

In relation to postings (and most importantly - viewing the vids) I am in a similar situation to you. Working shift work cramps my style a bit, but I do get the chance to get on every once and a while between shifts.

Regards Luke

Heya Luke, thanks for replying.

Sounds as if you do a worthwhile job my friend. Where is Country NSW, is that a town ? So locum doing what - a local doctor like a general practitioner ? When I hear the word locum over here I think of vets or dentists lol. Sorry I fix telecommunications so my medical knowledge is like zilch. While we're chatting whats the Frodo bit - is it your nickname x

I'm now in that state of bliss called Retirement. My profession before was as a professor at several universities. My avocations were performing and directing for the stage. I was also a dedicated collector or sound and video recordings related to live theatre. Since retiring a decade ago, I've left all of these behind. And now I spent a lot of my waking hours surfing the Internet. Contrary to what I feared before retiring, I couldn't be happier. For me, it truly is a State of Bliss.

Wow, see we get all sorts of people on here. Professor eh, how clever is that, so what was your subject or subjects. I never did uni as I went straight from school to an apprenticeship (which I do not regret). Do you have lots of reel to reel recordings that you see in tv archive programmes ? Where in America is the state of Bliss lol xx ha

I am a retired teacher; I chose to get out after 15 years in education. But, I am somewhat busy volunteering at the local food bank, Junior Achievement, Boys and Girls Club as well as my neighborhood "Book Lady," helping the kids read and discover books.

I'm surprised you were a teacher Beth. What kind of school was it then ? Sex education school lol or a distillery school lol xx Actually joking apart you appear to be doing a great job with the kids. There are so many illiterate kids and people out there today and texting doesn't help either.

I work full time in a grocey co-op store. I used to work for a organic food dist. and they were my customer for about 12 years. They were relentless about getting me to work there (which was very flattering) so I started part-time working 3 graveyard shifts a week along with my fulltime 4 day 12 hour shift. I did this for about 6 months and really had to chose one of them full-time. Their benefit package was the better of the two, so now I work full-time graveyard. Not to bad, I get off friday morning and off until sunday night and obviously have all day off for golf and Broke Straight Boys
Wow peter still working hard at 50 mate !! So how many years have you got to work until you retire then ? Jeez I worked night shifts for a while and hated it, I just could not get my body clock adjusted. Yes at the moment I'm a monday to friday girl and I love the weekends where I go back home to help my mum out and see friends.

Wanna swap jobs, LL?

Growing up all I wanted to do was work with children, but my life went in another direction. I'm very blessed with the life I have, but I do sometimes wonder what if...

Since you have somewhat of a flexible schedule, try volunteering at a school or library, reading to kids. This will give you a taste of what you might be missing.

Hey Mate

No probs. Country NSW is just indicating the I live rurally. The town I live in at the moment is Orange. Look it up, it is an awesome little town of about 50,000 people. Locum, here refers to working as a doctor on a 'casual type contract'. I work in the Emergency Department or Accident & Emergency (not sure what you call it over there). Generally need to have a good amount of experience as I am in charge of the facility after hours and have to handle medical cases of all kinds. The facility I work in is a level 5 trauma centre (which just means any major trauma's - stabbings, car accidents etc all come here).

Haha the Frodo bit was a name from my little nephew. I am a short fella and have reasonably hairy legs, so he said I looked like a hobbit, just caught on from there I guess.

Regards

Okay, you asked: yep, I taught K-12 for 10 years at a private school, mostly Spanish, World Geography and yes, sex education. The high school students actually liked taking my classes because I was always honest. Only one student ever refused to be in my class, my daughter in sex ed. But don't worry, she tested out of it...must have a great mom! After that I taught the remainder of my time in 1-4th at a public school. I really think it was my work in the public schools that turned me against teaching; it wasn't the kids, it was the restrictions. So now, I tell people I am a "trophy wife"..."low looking, high maintenance.":bump:

I did inquire about that a few years ago and I was swamped with red tape (I can't remember the exact details) I even had to complete an adult education course, so I gave up and spend one day a week (work permitting) volunteering at an animals shelter http://www.bigearsanimalsanctuary.com/.

Not exactly the same, but I love it!

I spend my days in my car. My territory is mostly in the outer boroughs, so I am not trying to drive and park my car in mid town Manhattan during the work week, but all of the highways in NYC can get quite challenging, but when in the middle of bumper to bumper traffic, I enjoy the radio and tell myself that I am getting paid to sit in the car, so I try not to stress out too much.

Do you ever listen to books on College Dudes? Anytime I'm in the car for a while, I put one on.

I recently complemented Blake for his interviewing style on the BTS with Sha, but I have to give Jon props for asking us a question, and then doing a series of follow up questions to get a bit more out of us.

Thanks Jon for helping us learn a bit more about our fellow forumites. :thumbup1:

Thanks, jon.
I taught Theatre arts and literature, plus Public Speaking. I directed a slew of college productions, both musical and straight. As for the collecting, what I have runs the gamut from cylinders (pre-1900) to DVDs. And nearly every format in between. When I pass on, they're all going to our Library Of Congress. I also have amassed a closet full of gay porn, which definitely ISN'T going to the LOC ! lol
