Greetings!

Just sat down to catch up on posts to the Forums and watch some episodes, when I started feeling the rumbling of an earthquake. No biggie, since they happen quite often here, but the rumbling got louder and more forceful and then the shifting started. Quite a few good jerks and shakes...even thought about running outside since I live right on a cliff and have always imagined my apt going over the edge one day. Lasted a good 60 seconds before finally calming down.

I have my apt. pretty well earthquake proofed, especially my music room. CDs cases are permanently affixed to the walls.

I'm gonna guess it was a 6.0

Largest we've ever had was an 8.2 back in '92 before I moved here.

OK, now that it's over I can go back to watching episodes.....

Wow Chafu. I'm glad you appear to be okay. Keep us informed if you have more aftershocks or problems. I've heard of updates causing people to shake all over until they almost pass out or fall out their chairs. But not shaking whole houses. hahA

Hi Tampa...we have dozens of earthquakes here every year, sometimes more than once a day. Coming from Michigan, where I think I only ever felt one minor quake, it was a bit disconcerting at first. But like everyone else who has lived here for any amount of time, you get used to them.

Our buildings are built to code and rarely suffer any damage, although that 8.2 one in '92 (before I moved here) did damage to a newly constructed hotel that cut corners during its construction. They had to take down that hotel.

My biggest concern is that I live right on a cliff, and I keep imagining that one day my whole apt will just go sliding down to the bottom. If that's the way I'm meant to go, then so be it! Have no regrets except not having enough sex! ;-{)>

Still no word on the magnitude of the quake, but I'm betting it was a 6.0

BTW, I'm really glad you've apparently decided NOT to leave the site.

Chafu213, yes I heard about an earthquake the other night as Breaking News on our 11:00pm news new Guam. It was a pretty deep earthquake and I think they said it registered around the mid to high 5 range.
Southern California had another rattler earlier in the week. It was felt from San Diego up to the LA area. Not sure what it's magnitude was.
Be safe and keep us posted.

Gary

Oops, sorry, that should have been "near Guam".
That's what happens when I don't proof read something before I submit.

Gary

Surprised it made the news as they are so common here. Newspaper today reported it as 5.5...with the epicenter 40 miles away. Guess it wasn't as big as it felt.

There was a small aftershock later in the evening....barely noticeable.

I have a friend moving here in a couple weeks from New Mexico. Earthquakes might freak them out. Wait til they experience a SUPER-Typhoon!

Chafu213

I spent most of my growing years in the Southern California area and am now living in the Seattle area so earthquakes don't even bother me too much. They say that we are over due for the big one, as is California.

I wonder if someone could enlighten me to the abbreviations you guys use for the states you live in. Maybe a little geographic location indication too, something like.

NYC - New York City - North East Coast.

It's second thought to you guys but to us overseas readers it can be confusing.

Thanks xx

See my answers above, shows you how dumb I am lol

I really had to laugh at some of your responses, especially Ohio north of Nevada. Some of our members should get a kick out of that.

But then if I had to guess locations of places in the UK (Ireland, Scotland, Wales, etc) I know I'd be just as far off, even tho' I've been to England a couple/three times.

I'd do just as badly trying to locate the areas of Australia, having only been there once for a couple months.

And I imagine most Americans couldn't pinpoint locations of countries in Europe, Central America or South America, or where some of the new countries that evolved from the USSR are.

I'd probably get most of the countries of Africa in the right place, since I spent a lot of time there. But I doubt if most Americans could.

Funny story: when I was 18, I decided to spend the summer between my Freshmen year and sophomore years hitchhiking around Kenya and Tanzania. I started out in Michigan and hitched to NY (New York...see previous list) to catch a flight to Nairobi. One of the drivers who picked me up somewhere in eastern Ohio (which is below Michigan in the Midwest BTW), after hearing my plans, asked if I was going to hitchhike all the way to Africa. Uh, ... duh!!!!!

A few of these listed places are US territories (US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico ... actually I think this is considered a Commonwealth..., Guam, and American Somoa-not to be confused with Somoa). The US Virgin Islands (not to be confused with the British Virgin Islands) and Puerto Rico are in the Caribbean, south and east of the US mainland. Guam and American Somoa are in the Pacific, closer to Japan and the Philippines than the US mainland.

Some come under other names like the District of Columbia (DC), which is on the East Coast BTW. I think the Northern Marianas Islands (my neighbors) are also considered a Commonwealth.

Others are not actually part of the USA, but come under the jurisdiction of the US Postal Service for some historical reason like WWII (Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Marshall Islands). All three of these are in the Pacific as well.

Couldn't explain the differences between Territory, Commonwealth and District, except that they are all considered possessions of the USA. We pay taxes to the local government just like a normal US citizen would do with a state tax, and what would be considered federal tax also gets paid locally. And we can't vote for the President. Go figure!

Quiz will be on Friday.....

Thanks for that chafu but could you do me a favour (spelt the English way) and put the info of the location of the state to the right hand side. Then I will copy and paste the list and put it in a file on my desktop so I can quickly bring it up when I'm reading the forum.

And I've just had another idea which I will start a new thread..

OH = OHIO - north of neveda i think. Remember the CSNY song about the students

You may be off in your geography of the state, but you are right on, in your musical knowlege of the group and the song. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young had an unbelievable sound together. And "Ohio" is a haunting, classic piece. You have excellent taste in your "classic rock" Jon.

I have my late father to thank for my musical taste Mike. Now I have been handed down his vinyls and there is some super stuff there. Hope you join the google maps thread Mike, it would be nice to see the area that you live.

OMG how embarrassing. I've just zoomed out of the USA to a point where you just get the north american map with the states and their abvs. And look where Ohio is lol.. only on the other side of America from Nevada.

I feel so dumb lol doh..

I will jump over to that thread in a second, Jon. I was wondering if your father ever took you to live concerts of some of his and your favorite bands doing revival shows, and which groups you might have seen personally. Now to google maps.

Before I answer your question here is a very powerfull clip of the song

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI7-m919ynU&feature=related

My dad took me to see Neil Young, CSN but never with Neil, both at the NEC in Birmingham England. We also went to the see the Rolling Stones a few years back at Wembley. I was going to go to Glastonbury last year where Neil appeared but could not get a ticket, they're like gold dust. I like Springstein too and love the relationship that Nils Lofgren had with Bruce and Neil.

Shit I just realised this thread is supposed to be about an earthquake. Sorry Chaffu dude.. big kiss xx

I watched that clip, and it is powerful. I was attending college in upstate New York, when that happened at Kent State, in Ohio. The students on my campus protested, no one attended classes and the main building was occupied by students.

Luckily, our college president was very liberal and anti-war as well, and the students were left free to do our thing on campus, without any police presence. It was all peaceful and most student wound up using it as on opportunity to get high and get laid. You know how 20 years are. :001_rolleyes: But it was an important and scary time in our lives.

And your really lucky that your dad took you to see the Stones, Neil and CSN too. Sounds like you had a great relationship with him. You were both very fortunate.

And what are you implying about "The Boss" and Nils???:thumbup1:

I apologize too Chaffu. Now back to the earthquake.
