Politics Discussion

As I had mentioned in the other thread I had to spend a week in Texas helping my mother out with a surgery she had. I couldn't wait to come back to a non-red state. If I had to look at the orange baffoons face any longer in the house I think I would have gone mad. I learned a lot about my biological mother and I have a different perspective now, it is much stronger that we need to vote out these right winged people and get more Democrats in. I'm utterly shocked and repulsed by a few things she said to me. If this is any indication of how most Republicans are now, well the US is fucked beyond all hope 🥺
At my part time job, there are some MAGA people working there. They all know where I stand politically and for the most part, we all agreed not to discuss politics at work. But there are a couple of assholes who work there who love to come at me with some really stupid statements. When they do, I tell them that Trump is far away the worst and most dangerous president this country has ever had, but they think quite the opposite. It’s hard for me to fathom that halfway intelligent people could not see the charlatan and fucked up liar he is. I feel your pain Chac. :crying:

Lemmings Mike, they will fall off the cliff following the person in front of them. This is why he likes uneducated people, they take him at his worthless word.

Don't know if you ever played that game on the computer before......

I’ve heard of the expression “lemmings”, but didn’t realize there was a computer game. Very relatable as is the parable of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” or the story of “The Pied Piper” or the real David Koresh or Jim Jones or…. Adolph Hitler.

I sure am curious how historians will describe the “Trump era” and the unfortunate long term harm that he will do to America’s reputation and effectiveness as a world power. Shameful is the word that comes to mind, as well as very, very sad.

I grew up in the 60’s and people protested the Viet Nam war and racial injustice on a daily basis. I went to UC Berkeley where the practice of protesting was well known. I’ve seen some protesting on immigration but nothing on a large scale against what the government is doing. Until then, nothing will change. I fear we’ve grown complacent which is dangerous. Where are the people when we need them?

You are 100% correct Rockstar. We can’t be complacent and need to be mobilized and march and protest on a regular basis. This is not America.

I’ve been thinking about what you said Rockstar. I am of the same generation as you and I went to college in the State University of New York system during the Kent State massacre and we had protests on our campus, although we had a liberal college president who supported our protests.

However I do believe that while idealistic in our beliefs, there was also a very selfish aspect to our protests as college students as we were of prime draft age and we didn’t want to be dragged across the world to fight and potentially die in an immoral war which as it turned out we were correct. And today as outraged as we are seeing decent people rounded up and arrested and deported. But as United States citizens it is not affecting us personally as the Vietnam War did. We do need to mobilize and get out in the streets to protest the outrageous actions of our federal government, but I feel the immediate motivation is missing. I’m not proud but being honest.

I agree that those of us who could have been drafted didn’t believe in the Viet Nam war and protesting was how we communicated that it was wrong. I don’t just see immigration as the issue. I include tariffs which are taxes against the citizens of the U.S. The last time tariffs were this high was in the 30’s and we know how that turned out. I look at the takeover of the military as a personal army and the run over of states rights. I include the termination of congress approved programs that take essential benefits away from citizens (people) who are in desperate need. I also see denial of a warming planet and it’s affects such as fires and flooding across the world, not just the U.S. This list goes on and covers many issues too numerous to list here but the country is being damaged and the lack of concern is disappointing.
