Ye Olde Curmudgeon
I wasn't planning to comment on this BTS because as a cynic I know I will make some comments which might offend some people. But one of the advantages of being old and curmudgeonly is that I don't give a damn what people think of my comments and opinions, so here goes:
1. Paul's being open about his addiction was a brave but necessary step in his dealing with his addiction. And I congratulate him for that and will remember him in my daily prayers that he continue to have the strength to deal with it as they say "one day at a time". He is also blessed with a family who from all appearances are supportive of his journey of sobriety.
2. Even as a cynic, I will admit that I felt that his family was sincere in their talking about his addiction as well as his doing gay porn.
3. But also as a cynic, I don't consider this type of interview as reality in the true sense of the word. The only true reality set-up would be like the old Candid Camera show when people did not know they were being filmed. There was some type of prep because there was not one slip from the family in calling him Paul, unless of course his real name is Paul and only the Canon is made up.
4. Paul was lucky to have survived his addiction especially given the lack of prompt and efficient medical care. It is hard to believe that in this day and age people would not know to call 911. The cynic in me leads me to believe there had to be another reason why 911 was not called right away. I know several young men from my days dealing with hustlers and street trade who weren't as lucky and either didn't survive or couldn't shake their addiction.
5. The whole issue of the tee shirt didn't offend me as homophobic, but I just found it ironic that Paul gave a long soliloquy about how he hates labels and then is sporting a tee shirt proclaiming he is not a certain label.
6. This bts seems to have been filmed a while ago since he talked about moving in with Sabrina (I'm assuming at the mansion) and of course we now know he and Damien are roomies. He expressed some widely varied but serious career options. I hope he is still planning for his future with some serious career goals.
7. The one part of his interview that did bother me was his views on marriage and children; to wit "...In the future I do see myself having kids; obviously I'd like to conceive my own so the only way of doing that would be being with a woman ... but going back to being raised in a Catholic home, that's one of my really strong values is that in marriage is when you have kids and if I was married to a man, I couldn't conceive a child with him - it's impossible ..."
Well Paul, you got some learning to doing. While true two men can not conceive a child together, one or the other or both can fertilize eggs and the resultant child will have been conceived by one or the other and the surrogate carries the baby for you. So a man can can conceive a child without actually being with a woman - it's done all the time. Marriage is not the only state in which two people can have kids. A hetero man and woman can conceive a child without being married and two gay men can conceive a child via surrogacy. My concern is that Paul is working for a gay owned and operated site whose vast majority of members are gay men and if his views are not supportive of marriage equality then that bothers me. Now as I said this bts appears to have been done a while ago and maybe his views have changed. I would hope so.
