I've read that "The Idol" is considered a gay porn classic. You can still see it by going to the Pornhub gay Vintage section. Kevin Redding played that college track star brilliantly particularly as a straight college jock being seduced. The fact that his only movie was such a hit and he never returned causes one to suspect that he really was a straight dude in need of money who had "buyer's remorse" thereafter and retired from gay porn.

In this landmark all male film, Casey Donovan stars in a trio of erotic vignettes. Directed by Wakefield Poole and shot with his friends on Fire Island. This is truly a groundbreaking early adult film.
Upon its initial theatrical release, Wakefield Poole's Boys in the Sand became one of the most successful gay independent films of all time. It even received an interesting review in Variety, which wrote, "It's so cinema verite that at times the viewer fears the camera itself is going to get into the action." Written, directed, shot, edited and self-distributed by Poole, the film premiered at the venerable 55th Street Playhouse in New York City, the first time a gay sex film played in a non-porn theatre.
The story revolves around then-neophyte porner Casey Donovan - the stage name for John Calvin Culver (1943-1987) - and his spirited sexual antics with three other men in various places on Fire Island. The men represent dreamy "types:" the blond surfer, the muscle man, the sensitive thinker, the sensuous black. No dialogue, just mood enhancing music (ranging from Debussy to rock). An important gay porn classic.
1. Bayside: The dark, bearded Peter Fisk walks along the wooded paths of the island until reaching a beach. He strips and sunbathes on a blanket. Suddenly, out in the water, the blond naked Donovan appears and runs up onto the beach to Fisk. Fisk performs oral sex on Donovan, who then leads Fisk into the woods. Fisk grabs the blanket and follows, catching up to Donovan in a clearing. They kiss and touch each other, then Donovan takes a studded leather strap from Fisk's wrist and attaches it around Fisk's genitalia. They continue the scene, with each performing oral sex on the other and Donovan penetrating Fisk. Following Donovan's climax he returns to servicing Fisk orally and, as Fisk is climaxing, momentary flashes of previous scenes are intercut. The scene ends with Fisk taking the strap from his genitals and attaching it around Donovan's wrist. Fisk runs into the ocean and vanishes, mirroring Donovan's entrance. Donovan dons Fisk's abandoned clothes and heads off down the beach.
2. Poolside: The segment opens with Donovan on a pier, holding a newspaper. He returns to his house, strips by the pool and begins reading. Intrigued by an ad in the back of the paper, Donovan writes a letter in response. After a number of days pass (marked by the cliche device of fluttering calendar pages), he receives a reply in the form of a package. Inside is a tablet, which he throws into the pool. The water starts to churn and the dark-haired Danny Di Cioccio emerges to Donovan's delight. The two couple by the pool, with each performing oral sex on the other and Donovan penetrating Di Cioccio in a variety of positions. Di Cioccio turns the tables and tops Donovan until Donovan's climax. The scene closes with the two engaged in in the pool and then walking off together down a boardwalk.
3. Inside: This final segment opens with shots of Donovan showering, toweling off and wandering idly around his room, intercut with shots of African-American telephone repairman Tommy Moore checking various poles and lines outside, Donovan spots Moore from his balcony. Moore sees Donovan as well. The remainder of the segment consists of Donovan's fantasized sexual encounters with Moore throughout the house intercut with shots of Donovan sniffing poppers and penetrating himself with a large black Dildo The segment ends following Donovan's climax with the Dildo with the real Moore coming inside the house and closing the door behind them.
The sequel pics have been uploaded to my folder. I need to add I have an editor's program that I use to lighten pictures that are 2 dark 2 see clearly so the video may be harder to make out but in no way change the action shown. I hope this in no way offends the purists.

From my personal perspective, "Boys in the Sand" was the first gay movie that had advertisements in both The New York Daily News and The New York Post. There was a part of the movie section of both papers that had little 3" x 3" ads for pornographic films, mostly straight and a few gay as time when by.
Here are some of the ads that appeared in the papers for similar films during that era.
By the way the above Big Top Theater actually did serve a free buffet on Sunday evenings at 6 PM. I went a couple of times, but had no interest in eating food prepared by the staff of a sleazy Times Square porn palace. Who knew what went into the food??? lol

My personal review of Boys in the Sand from memory from fifty years ago is that it was much to do about nothing for me. I found it boring. I watched for over an hour and a half a film with no dialog and a bunch of guys wandering through the Meat Rack of Fire island. The sex scenes were few and far between. I guess it was an "art film", but I wanted more nudity and sex. lol
But obviously it was a ground breaking film and a step forward for gay rights, having such a movie playing right in the middle of mid town Manhattan. On a side note, years later, I vacationed in Key West and Casey Donovan, then much older had a gay motel called Casa Donovan. I just googled it.

And this is more about Casey Donovan. Sadly he was another casualty of the AIDS epidemic. He was 43 when he died.

Casey Donovan (born John Calvin Culver; 1943 – 1987 was an American male pornographic film actor from the late 1960s until the mid-1980s, appearing primarily in adult films and videos catering to gay male audiences, during the Golden Age of Porn. Following a brief career as a Latin teacher and a stint as a highly paid male model, Donovan appeared in the film that would cement his status as a gay icon, Boys in the Sand, in 1971. Attempts to build on his notoriety to achieve mainstream crossover success failed, but Donovan continued to be a bankable star in the adult industry for the next 15 years. He was briefly a mainstream actor, who appeared on stage, as well as a theatre producer and manager and appeared as himself in TV series Emerald City.
In 1973, at the height of his popularity, Donovan met actor-turned writer Tom Tryon and the two entered into a long-term relationship the following year. Tryon was deeply closeted and grew increasingly disturbed by Donovan’s notoriety. Their relationship ended in 1977.
In 1978, Donovan purchased a house in Key West, Florida to run as a bed and breakfast dubbed “Casa Donovan.” He struggled to keep it, but it failed. More successful was his time as a celebrity tour guide, conducting all-gay trips in partnership with an outfit called Star Tours to Italy, China, Peru and other places.
By 1985, Donovan’s health had begun to deteriorate, as he had contracted HIV. Although he had counseled his fans through his “Ask Casey” column as early as 1982 to reduce their number of sex partners and take steps to preserve their health, and urged them to be tested for HIV once the test was developed, he himself made little or no effort to change his behavior. Donovan died in 1987 of an AIDS-related pulmonary infection in Inverness, Florida, aged 43.

Who or how many staff are qualified at a porn palace in the early 70's to know the teperature ranges that all the hot and cold food should be kept in? Or has all the proper equipment to hold those temps? And good handwashing among those directly preparing food? Even in more modern times I've been to amateurish buffets that I knew the local health departments would either have found many violations in, or would have immediately shut them down altogether. Room temperature meat, soups, tuna salad left sitting around for who knows how long...and served in an early 1970's adult movie theater? No thanks! haha
