The time I've had teasing you all with these pics and the guessing game of who this high school athlete is has been fun and enjoyable. But I've found that it has also made me quite melancholy and wistful during this lonely and trying Covid era. When I see some of these earlier pictures of him I'm taken with how much they humanize him in a new way for me. With all the stress and worry of the last year, these new (to me) photos of him have deeply affected me and made me rather emotional in a way I was not expecting.

His middle name is Byron. From what I've read of his high school days he was very good in the sports he liked. Not just okay. But quite good. He was even regarded competitively as one of the best pole vaulters in the county. He wore dorky glasses in the 40's as a teenager when that really wasn't hip or cool. He might have even been called names like "four eyes" and so on.

So why would the world ever care or take notice of a dorky high school jock if he didn't make a huge mark on the world of sports later in life? Yet to this very day the mere mention of his name or an image of his face has the power to simultaneously bring a smile to your face, and a lump to your throat as you might stare at the ground and ponder and remember him with a form of reverence and deep respect.

Who but him by just his own unique example, could re-define for a 20th century generation the old stale norms, mores and expectations of masculinity...? Push back on hetero norms...and blaze his own path with the whole world watching? Who but him could show the world such youthful idealistic devotion to his craft? Who but him could become a larger than life Legend? When I see this awkward looking high school jock going through the throes of adolescence and self-discovery, I feel a mixture of sadness and joy for what he's about to accomplish.

Mikeyank loves his boy Jimmy Johnson. And I'm happy for him. Genuinely. And since he likes guys named Jimmy so much, I am very pleased to tell him this... In his midwest high school and among all his classmates, friends and teachers, this mystery man's name was also Jimmy.

Let the world not forget that very beautiful, awkward high school student and athlete from Indiana. Let the world never forget Jimmy Byron.

This has been quite a ride sharing details of this mystery man from the past. And as I noted above, it became rather emotional for me to see him in this totally new light. I honestly thought somebody would recognize him immediately and there would be little suspense. The difficulty people have had identifying him at such a young age has actually been a blessing in disguise for me. I've really appreciated the extra time given to be able to tell you more about this man whose early life I knew next to zero about until very recently. For those of you who have already figured out who this is...and have chosen to say nothing so far...I thank you.

I've told you that he was a huge high school athlete. Throughout his 4 years of high school at various times (and sometimes simultaneously within the same year) he played baseball, basketball and was on the track and field team. He dabbled in acting in a few school plays. He was also president of his school's debate team. One year as president of said debate team he won a state-wide competition and was named and awarded as, "N. F. L. State Contest Winner [of] Dramatic Declamation". So intellectually he obviously had more than just a few brain cells firing at the same time also. Talk about a well-rounded individual who was technically in the eyes of the world still just a kid!

It fills my heart with gladness and pride for him to know that he took such full advantage of his high school years. It was as if he was determined to get every bit of joy and fun possible out of the high school experience. And to leave no passed-up opportunities on the table when he graduated. He had no way of knowing when he started high school as a Freshmen at 14 that more than half of his life was already over. Yet on a subconscious level, just like his teammates on the track team knew that the stopwatch was ticking as they ran their race...perhaps he felt a push to over-achieve and live life with gusto without delay...as the clock of his own mortality wound down. From the time of his graduation at 18 he was to have only 6 more years of adulthood in which to achieve success in the world and to find some personal happiness as a young man.

Had I been alive at the time of his death I might have felt the same deep sadness I felt at the loss of Princess Diana. I'm sure for many that the news of his passing shook many young and even some older people to their core. That for such a bright shining star in the world, who still had so much potential ahead of him...that it was suddenly already over. The guy who started out as Jimmy Byron [Blank] at Fairmount High School in Indiana.

His was a life very well lived. He belongs to the Ages now.
