You make some interesting points KG. I am amazed how still today with somewhere between 10%-25% of the population being gay or bi, that we have so few professional athletes who have come out during their playing days. Wheres in other fields of public performers including actors, singers, authors and today politicians as well, we are beginning to have a representative proportion coming out but in the major professional sports in the U.S.A., (football, baseball, basketball and hockey), I am not aware of any current male players who are openly gay. Women are more open particularly in the WNBA and other sports. But male professional sports are lagging way behind in gay liberation. But I'm sure in time that will change too.
You are quite correct that the problem is more in male than female sports. When I played high school football, it was unthinkable to admit to having gay feelings even though we were all patting each other on the butt after any excuse for a good play. God help any player who popped a boner in the team shower, although I very successfully would only get half hard which gave me credit from my teammates for having a big dick as being half hard does make it look bigger! But I did not have my first male to male experience until after college and felt socially compelled to date and fuck girls until then, mainly blow jobs from female cheerleaders (whereas today my attention is more focused on the cute male cheerleaders). I was aware of my then bisexual attraction, but felt it unthinkable to get it on with a guy. Fortunately things evolved for the better in my 20s once out of college. In male sports today those who come out tend to wait until after they retire, which tells a lot about how far male sports still have to go in terms of sexual orientation equality. With that background you can see how strongly I think about young jocks sorting out their sexual orientation either consciously (as I did) or unconsciously using the escape mechanism of sublimation, the channeling of same sex attraction into socially accepted ways.
