Hello from Japan

So, I'm switching it up here. I do speak Japanese. I'm nowhere near fluent but I can get by without much hassle. How long have you been in Japan? And what was the hardest thing to get used to-other than the language of course?

I've been here several years and will be here for several more. Hardest thing to get used to? Maybe the lack of space. Japan is a very easy transition. Learning the language wasn't hard but reading can still trip me up.

Ugh. Kanji will be the death of me, I swear. XD And yeah, the congestion in and around Tokyo can be pretty crazy from what I've heard. I haven't made it there yet, but I will some day. So, is Japan pretty open to the LGBT community? Have you been able to explore gay Japan? I know you're in the military, which I'm sure complicates a few things.

Most people rely on the train system because the roads are to impractical here. You can always get to where you need to go by train. Gay Japan is crazy. It is becoming much more open than what it used to be. Most people aren't open about it and just get married, have a family, and have a homosexual affair on the side. It is actually much more accepted in China and Taiwan then it is here. Being in the military doesn't complicate things much. In fact, it is very easy to be gay and in the military. Despite what most people's impression of the military are, cultural attitudes here are much more progressive then in the general American public. In fact, it became practically impossible to enforce Don't Ask Don't Tell because so many people were open about it.

Hello guys, I'm a 27 y/o originally from Massachusetts living in Japan for the next several years. I am in the military. I also live about 20 miles south of Tokyo which IHO is the best city on Earth.

Hey there, nice to have you here. We would love to hear more about your travels, and please add some photos! I am a military brat, but moved out before my parents went overseas. My mom was Chief of the Pacific for AAFES back in the 90's. She and my dad lived on Yakota for about 3 years; they loved the area and traveled every weekend.

Hi thanks for serving. Be careful the SOFA with japan is very bad for Americans. Don't get in trouble. I'm sure you won't.

Welcome to the forum PNC! I'm curious as to how you came up with your screen name. Why did you pick that?

Thank you all, I won't bore you all with stories about my travels but I have been all over the Pacific and I am hoping to take leave to mainland Asia this winter. As for my SN, i've had this as my default screen name since I was 14. I was frustrated when I had to make up an AIM sn. Every sn I chose was taken except this. Ever since then I have used this name for almost everything. And thanks Joey for your concern. Fortunately I have my own house away from the base and so its easy to stay out of trouble.
