Was driving down the highway yesterday flipping stations and a oldie from Glen Campbell came on "wichita linesman" and as I'm singing along, there's a line that kind of got me emotional. I new the line but never really paid attention to it, but it had me thinking about this subject. So here's a couple of my fav lines from songs. Everyone please share
I need you more then want you
and I want you for all time! damn

If the sun refuse to shine
I would still be loving you
if mtns crumble to the sea
there would still be you and me
"thank you" led zep

2 lines from 1 song
I've never been so much in love
I've never hurt so bad at the same time
and
I just want to hold you
I don't want to hold you down
"simple man" graham nash

tonight our bed is cold
from the darkness of our love
god have mercy on the man
who doubts what he sure of
"brilliant disguise" bruce springsteen

Carol Bayer Sager: "We wanted it all"

Look how all our dreams came true
See how I've got me, baby, you've got you
Through it all, just one thing died
A little thing called love, something deep inside

No, this is how it works
You peer inside yourself
You take the things you like
Then try to love the things you took

And then you take that love you made
And stick it into some
Someone else's heart
Pumpin' someone else's blood

And walking arm in arm
You hope it don't get harmed
But even if it does
You'll just do it all again

Regina Spektor On the Radio

When my wings feel broken I listen to this song and the chorus makes me think of the people I love and who miraculously love me back and reminds me how very blessed I am...

So take these broken wings
And learn to fly again, learn to live so free
When we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up and let us in

Music doesn't heal broken wings, but it can make them feel less bruised...

So many to choose from...three of my favorites:

Pet Shop Boys, "The Survivors"

If life is worth living,
It's got to be run
As a means of giving
Not as a race to be won.

George Michael, "To Be Forgiven"

Suddenly my life is like a river
Taking me places I don't want to go
But like all good men who swim too well
It takes all that I have just to cry for help
Then that voice in my head tells me no

Tracy Chapman, "Remember the Tinman"

And remember the tinman
Found he had what he thought he lacked
Remember the tinman
Go find your hear and take it back

You ever wonder about some of the lyrics in a song. For example, The Beatles song in which they sing about the girl with colitus that walks by.

This song is brilliant and it's by Jethro Tull - what a storyteller - I give you Thick as a Brick

"Thick As A Brick (Part 1)"

Really don't mind if you sit this one out.
My words but a whisper your deafness a SHOUT.
I may make you feel but I can't make you think.
Your sperm's in the gutter your love's in the sink.
So you ride yourselves over the fields and
you make all your animal deals and
your wise men don't know how it feels to be thick as a brick.

And the sand-castle virtues are all swept away
in the tidal destruction the moral melee.
The elastic retreat rings the close of play
as the last wave uncovers the newfangled way.
But your new shoes are worn at the heels
and your suntan does rapidly peel
and your wise men don't know how it feels
to be thick as a brick.

And the love that I feel is so far away:
I'm a bad dream that I just had today
and you shake your head and say it's a shame.

Spin me back down the years and the days of my youth.
Draw the lace and black curtains and shut out the whole truth.
Spin me down the long ages: let them sing the song.
See there! A son is born and we pronounce him fit to fight.
There are black-heads on his shoulders, and he pees himself in the night.
We'll make a man of him, put him to trade
teach him to play Monopoly and how to sing in the rain.

The Poet and the Painter casting shadows on the water
as the sun plays on the infantry returning from the sea.
The do-er and the thinker: no allowance for the other
as the failing light illuminates the mercenary's creed.
The home fire burning: the kettle almost boiling
but the master of the house is far away.
The horses stamping, their warm breath clouding
in the sharp and frosty morning of the day.
And the poet lifts his pen while the soldier sheaths his sword.
And the youngest of the family is moving with authority.
Building castles by the sea, he dares the tardy tide to wash them all aside.

The cattle quietly grazing at the grass down by the river
where the swelling mountain water moves onward to the sea:
the builder of the castles renews the age-old purpose
and contemplates the milking girl whose offer is his need.
The young men of the household have all gone into service
and are not to be expected for a year.
The innocent young master - thoughts moving ever faster -
has formed the plan to change the man he seems.
And the poet sheaths his pen while the soldier lifts his sword.
And the oldest of the family is moving with authority.
Coming from across the sea, he challenges the son who puts him to the run.

What do you do when the old man's gone - do you want to be him?
And your real self sings the song. Do you want to free him?
No one to help you get up steam
and the whirlpool turns you `way off-beam.

LATER.
I've come down from the upper class to mend your rotten ways.
My father was a man-of-power whom everyone obeyed.
So come on all you criminals! I've got to put you straight
just like I did with my old man twenty years too late.
Your bread and water's going cold.
Your hair is too short and neat.
I'll judge you all and make damn sure that no-one judges me.

You curl your toes in fun as you smile at everyone,
you meet the stares, you're unaware that your doings aren't done.
And you laugh most ruthlessly as you tell us what not to be.
But how are we supposed to see where we should run?
I see you shuffle in the courtroom with
your rings upon your fingers
and your downy little sidies
and your silver-buckle shoes.
Playing at the hard case,
you follow the example of the comic-paper idol
who lets you bend the rules.

So!
Come on ye childhood heroes!
Won't you rise up from the pages of your comic-books
your super crooks
and show us all the way.
Well! Make your will and testament.
Won't you? Join your local government.
We'll have Superman for president
let Robin save the day.

You put your bet on number one and it comes up every time.
The other kids have all backed down and they put you first in line.
And so you finally ask yourself just how big you are
and take your place in a wiser world of bigger motor cars.
And you wonder who to call on.
So! Where the hell was Biggles when you needed him last Saturday?
And where were all the sportsmen who always pulled you though?
They're all resting down in Cornwall
writing up their memoirs for a paper-back edition
of the Boy Scout Manual.

Which lines are your favorite in this song Jon?
You didn't ask me Robert, but mine is:

"Your sperm's in the gutter your love's in the sink".

Twenty year old "mikeyank" thought the word sperm in a song was cool and sexy.. Come to think of it, so does 63 year old "mikeyank".

I think Ian Anderson is a fantastic poet/songwriter and I came across this song on the vinyl album Thick as a Brick that is amongst the albums that my dad left me. The album cover, if you have not seen it, depicts the front page of a local newspaper with lots of little stories that tie into the songs on the album. Very clever.

Can you post the youtube clip please if you can find one.

This song made a big impression in my teenage years. It changed my view of the USA, from being one big rich country to a more realistic look.

"Village Ghetto Land"

Would you like to go with me
Down my dead end street
Would you like to come with me
To Village Ghetto Land

See the people lock their doors
While robbers laugh and steal
Beggars watch and eat their meal -from garbage cans

Broken glass is everywhere
It's a bloody scene
Killing plagues the citizens
Unless they own police

Children play with rusted cars
Sores cover their hands
Politicians laugh and drink-drunk to all demands

Families buying dog food now
Starvation roams the streets
Babies die before they're born
Infected by the grief

Now some folks say that we should be
Glad for what we have
Tell me would you be happy in Village Ghetto Land
