Park Miller Theater

I didn't get my first VHS player until 1983 and so before that I watched all my porn in the theaters in Manhattan. And my favorite was the grandest. It was the old Henry Miller Theater which was renamed The Park Miller on West 43rd Street between Broadway and Sixth Avenue. It later became the straight disco Xenon and today is an elegant theater again. But during that time period, when visiting home in Brooklyn during my college years, I would borrow my father's car, saying that I was going to meet up with friends. I would park on Sixth Avenue just across from 42nd Street after 6:30 PM and wait for the parking to be free after 7 PM, and head the two blocks to the gay porno theatre for porn and maybe some "play" in the seats or in one of the bathrooms.

This is the building itself in one of it's incarnations.

Today it is The Stephen Sondheim Theatre.

But back then I'd see the little ads in the newspapers and go see my favorite movies.

This is not an actual picture from inside The Park Miller, but this is the kind of stuff that went on in the seats of all the gay cinemas in the city. lol

As I mentioned earlier, my early gay porn viewing was done at the XXX gay porn theaters in Manhattan. But the VCR changed all that for me and for porn viewers everywhere. I began renting my porn tapes primarily at a little bookstore on Hudson Street in Greenwich Village called Gay Treasures. But as I got bored with traditional gay porn, I found that they also had what I like to call "specialty tapes", not available everywhere. And being into "believably straight" guys even way back then, I discovered stuff by small independent studios like AMG and then Old Reliable. Both studios hired straight guys who were down on their luck, willing to get naked for gay guys like me to get their jollies watching naked.

Here are some examples of AMG, (Athletic Model Guild). The very early stuff, from before my time buying porn, was in magazines and had the models pose in posing straps like this.

But the tapes that I rented in the eighties featured the AMG models totally naked, and not having sex, but playing out scenarios like wrestling and spanking which I found hot, and some of his later stuff featured jerk off solos as well..

Old Reliable

The other studio that I mentioned in my previous post was called Old Reliable, and David Hurles was the founder and apparently was a friend of AMG founder Bob Mizer. According to Wikipedia, "Hurles' models were typically ex-cons, hustlers, drifters, and lowlifes."

He also had naked guys boxing and wrestling and usually had the guys jerk off to finish their scenes.
