25th anniversary of the Berlin Wall being torn down

November 9th this year is the 25th anniversary of the Berlin Wall being torn down. I recently posted a song from Barclay James Harvest on the Louis thread and whilst on that Youtube page I got hooked into this one below. The first 6 minutes show good footage of what Berlin was like in 1980 - the year of this free concert.

It is good to recall this anniversary. It is important for us all to recall, also, that the Iron Curtain is descending, once again. Our brothers and sisters in Russia, have not been in such great peril, for a generation. But now, their worst fears are being realized, as tyranny once again darkens their land.

If any one of us KNOWS; if any one of us CARES; if any one of us UNDERSTANDS. . . . he must stand WITH the PEOPLE of Russia, and AGAINST the tyranny being imposed on them, once again.

Any one of us who KNOWS, CARES, or UNDERSTANDS, should beg, plead, and FIGHT so that this WALL, between East and West, will not be put between us, yet again.

The people need to rise up and fight against Putin, to much power for one man leads tyranny. He is putting their country back 30 yrs and democracy soon will no longer be in their vocabulary once again.

The Berlin Wall was not the first to be built and fall, nor will it be the last. I can think of many from the Great Wall of China, to the walls surrounding Medieval Castles even down to the walls separating the United States from Mexico. Unfortunately, many of the walls constructed today are not physical structures but ideological barriers between differing cultures.

The world needs to have a "smoke out" day to sit back, listen to music and just chill out. (I think I'll do that now. Great thinking, Louis!)

It may not have been the only wall or barrier Louis, but it is probably the most historic due to it kept the two superpowers apart for nearly 30 walls and it's tearing down ended the cold war. However, as Ambi says, Russia (mainly Putin) is set to rekindle that period and seems to want to add his name to the famous or infamous Soviet leaders of the past.

We have had suck barriers in the uk over the years, the most recent being those in Northern Ireland during the troubles. Then of course more historically there was Hadrian's Wall and Offa's Dyke. Around the world there is the barrier that has separated Cyprus since around 1974 and of course the West Bank barrier over the water in Israel.

Apparently there are hundreds of thousands of people due in Berlin during the week of Nov 9th, to celebrate this anniversary. I bet you Putin is not there..
