I have wondered for some time how models are paired up for the various scene's. Of special interest to me is how two new models, both very masculine,. would be slated to be together so early in their career's here, especially given the shortage of straight acting, appearing, guys in a bevy of not so straight not so masculine guys. Putting Nico and Bentley together just doesn't make sense to me and seems a waste of resources to me. Don't get me wrong....I love both young men. Nico is currently at the top of my list here and Bentley isn't that far down. Eventually I would love to see them together; however, there are a whole host of bottoms to fuck before that happens in my mind. To me it is just a waste of resources. A particuliar resource Broke Straight Boys is in short supply of. JMO! If its scheduling, then scheduling needs to improve. I would rather leave one scene open on the schedule than to waste precisous resources, that is unless some of the Tanner's, Jake's, Ayden's of the world are beating down the doors for filming time.

honestly, I think it’s based on who is at the studios at the same time. In Atlanta they usually have 7 guys in at one time, so more options and more pairings. In Miami I think David said they are only able to host 4 guys at one time, but that may be because of COVID and having less guys. So I guess Nico, Bentley, Richie, & Aiden were the 4 guys in at the same time, so I would expect to see everyone paired with one another, if that makes sense. I guess it’s all in the casting and who they decide to bring in at one time.

But you’re right. It’s totally scheduling.

That's a good question SFP. Though I suspect that often the deciders (whoever they may be) do not get the luxury of really pondering the all the pairing possibilities. I've heard in the past of directors, or whomever planning out all the kinds of potential pairings think they have all their ducks in a row...and then one model misses his flight to the studio. Or a newbie model flakes out at the last minute and never shows up to the studio at all. Any of which can throw all the best laid plans into chaos. Then you're forced to just make do with whatever you've got.

It's like an old saying that I think is so funny and true. Man plans... God laughs. haha

But it's still a good question of how pairings are decided under the most ideal of circumstances, when everything lines up precisely as scheduled.

This is actually a great thread. A lot of thought goes into hiring a Broke Straight Boys model or any model for that matter. Talen recruiting is very challenging and can be difficult at times.

Some days, you have the cutest boys applying while other's you have the ugliest guys applying or nobody applies for a few weeks then all of a sudden you get slammed with applicants wanting to film.

Although guys apply, it takes a lot of experience to weed out the guys that are willing to film. Those guys that apply that don't want to do oral or don't want to do anal sex we don't hire or they just want to do a solo and that is it. We don't hire them, for us they have to be very opened minded and willing to do it all or at least try but overall keep an open mind about doing this type of work. Although a guy can apply and they are comfortable having gay sex or if they are gay or whatever they are, some just fail....when you place the camera on and the lights and we have to film, some guys just fall apart and can't do it. We do the best we can to make them feel comfortable and the other models try to encourage them, but some guys just can't film and do it.

We do our outmost best to hire the best looking guys that fit the imagine of Broke Straight Boys and College Boy Physicals and College Dudes, it all depends who is applying so we are at the mercy of which guy applies and can do this type of work and how there attitude is towards this. We don't hire "junkies" (drug addicts) and we do our best to keep away from guys that have personality disorders.

With all the experience that I have, I can already tell and notice if the guy has a personality disorder and I will not hire them. The great thing about filming now this time around, I have the input and Shannon and Mark and we do a two process interview. I get the guys pics and do a phone interview and Shannon does a Skype interview. The logic behind that is between my experience and Shannon's experience we can really weed out the guys that are not going to do well for our production. Having more then two eyes, is much better because there are things that Shannon picks up that I don't and vice versa.

Nowadays, Shannon and I interview the guys and we do our best to match up the models that we *think* will work best together and look good together and which site they belong on may it be Broke Straight Boys, or College Boy Physicals or College Dudes sites. Perhaps we have a model that will appear on both Broke Straight Boys and College Dudes or Broke Straight Boys and College Boy Physicals or just College Boy Physicals and College Dudes sites so we have to do a lot of logistics to see where the guy will fit in the best.

Then we factor in your guys opinions and the model ratings and if you guys enjoy watching a certain model and that model normally has a decent rating, we bring them back...those are the best guys because they work well, they are great to work with, they get along with the other models, they feel comfortable in front of the lights and camera, they encourage the new guys and are a pleasure to be around and it shows when we film them and it makes our decision making much easier.

Most of the times, it works out great and every so often regardless of how we plan, and interview and with both my experience and Shannon's experience sometimes the guys we hire becomes a nightmare week for us, but that is what we signed up for and what we have to deal with on our end.

Thank you David for your detailed explanation of the hiring process. It is interesting to learn that both you and Sha are involved in the interviewing and hiring process. Drawing on both of your combined years in the industry sounds like a great collaborative process.

Thank you very much for your explanation of the process. It makes sense and obviously there is a lot of work involved in the whole process. If you please, can we go back to my original post and address specifically (If that is possible) the pairing of Nico and Bentley? It may be that you are prevented from addressing my specific question about the pairing of these two boys, but if it is possible I would (and maybe other members) appreciate hearing the rationale of putting these two boys together at this time. Its probably obvious from my questions here and my comments on these two boys scenes that I consider them to be very masculine, straight acting and appearing, and are my ideal Broke Straight Boys...You can add Tanner, Jake, Landon, Ayden, and several others to my list of my kind of Broke Straight Boys's. I am attracted to their "type" on screen as well as in real life. I find, in my opinion, a deficiency of this type of young man on Broke Straight Boys Hence, my concern of wasting the masculine straight acting, looking, fucking assets by putting these two together.

That would be interesting for David, (or Sha) to answer exactly how the four boys are chosen to go to David's studio for the shoots of the week, and if consideration is given to the how each of the four scenes will turn out. Of course I agree with SFPS that I am a huge fan of the handsome young believably straight types and his examples include perhaps my top two all time, (Ayden & Jake). So I wonder if it is a factor to pick two tops and two primarily bottoms but even in that situation with only four the two tops will need to be in a scene together, (perhaps in a three way with one of the bottoms?). But I would be very interested if that is part of the decision making process of who to bring in for a particular shoot week.

Hey Mikeyank, you bring up a possibility that I didn't think of. If "stuck" with two great tops and an open shoot schedule, a 3 way makes perfect sense. That way you don't waste two tops and put them with a good bottom and turn them loose. They could play with and suck each other and take the bottom to "pound town" .

There is really no secret or rational behind it...as we spoke to each model, we knew from experience that the guys for that week would work. By having Richie, Aiden, Nico and Bentley together, they all had different personalities but yet super nice guys and great personalities. Bentley was the hot "trade" boy in the group, Richie West that already had experience and the token gay boy, Aiden the Marine, although gay, he had a great persona and body and attitude and Nico was our "latin" lover..super nice guy and all of the 3-guys all had interesting and different backgrounds and between Shannon and I, it just felt right putting them all together in one group...and it seemed to work out great.

The next group was Rowan and Ethan, we already had Rowan and Ethan lined up but we needed two more guys...so Ethan referred his friend Grey that he knew and Grey was cool because he was coming here and he new Ethan so he wasn't alone and then we had another guy...a 4th guy that froze up in front of the camera and he wasn't able to film and we had to send him home so with that week it was Rowan, Ethan and Grey and that group worked out great and all of the guys got along well.

I think after a while dealing with hiring models, you get a good feeling, a good vibe that the guys are going to gel...I think its experience at this point and we just know.

The next group....I am also excited about...but you have to wait and keep on watching Broke Straight Boys, more new guys!!!

Jaden went home? I’m really surprised he froze up. He didn’t seem that camera shy when he was making out with Grey and stroking his dick in the back seat of that car while Ethan was driving. Or when he was stroking Grey’s dick on the Broke Straight Boys set while Grey was playing video games. Maybe it was the lights and knowing it was a big time studio that caused the freeze up.

I get your point, but of Broke Straight Boys's epic scenes in the archives was when they paired two of their young hot tops, who then fucked each other's virgin ass and had a great double anal cherry popping scene. So there are always exceptions to a good general rule.

Thanks for the very informative post. I have one question: back in the pre pandemic days when you had up to seven guys per week, did two models ever request a scene together? One would think that going along with such a request would make for a very hot scene.

Hi David,

This part really intrigued me. I know you are not likely to be a trained psychologist nor a psychiatrist. But for the rest of us, can you please give us any advice on how to pick up on those with personality disorders in order to either to possibly get help for friends or family members...or to cue us in to turn the other way if we are considering getting into a relationship with someone who is bipolar, OCD or has some other common personality disorder? I once briefly dated someone who was bipolar. (If you could actually call what we were doing "dating".) I knew fairly quickly that the elevator wasn't going all the way to the top. But I also knew I was missing an important piece to the puzzle. When he shared the bipolar diagnosis it made much more sense.

Few people out there who I've met or known of in my limited life experience have their personality disorder symptoms well managed with medications. That's not meant to be a critique of them as individuals. They didn't ask to deal with mental illness. They're the patients and victims. It's more a critique of where the science and progress of modern psychology stands in the 21st century. Psychology and psychiatric medicine is still in its infancy in my opinion. I think decades from now people may look at even this time period as still part of the Dark Ages of the field.

We all know that our beloved late great Mike Robbins was bipolar. So it's not like there is shame in having a mental illness or disorder. On the other hand I would also like to know as soon as possible if I should go running the other way if I'm likely in for a rough ride with someone who could be bipolar for instance. Or at best, if I should at least really weigh the pros and cons of being in an actual relationship (or in a position which requires mutual trust, dependability and competence) with someone who is bipolar or otherwise mentally less functional in some other way.

So what are some of the verbal cues, or body language cues, or just personality quirks that will immediately raise some red flags for you? Whether they be by phone, video chat, Zoom or whatever?

Great question. No I am not a therapist or have any training in that department. I think over the years you learn from experience. When a guy applies, we always ask for updated pictures, there name and contact phone number. I mostly do a phone interviews. When you speak to the person on the phone, you get your first impressions of them. If they pay attention and ask questions, you they answer your questions and they communicate, where if the guy I am speaking to his eating, or order fast food, or talking to someone else, doesn't really listen or some guys have a rude nasty attitude...I don't finish the interview and tell that person we are not the studio for you, but if the person is polite articulate, asks questions and communicates properly, then I have a lot of confidence that they will arrive here with the correct attitude.

With the new system with the 2nd interview, Shannon does a Skype interview and speaks to them in real time. I can't speak for Shannon, but he has expressed to me that when he does a in person real time interview, you can tell the person's body language, his facial expressions and you can see how they act and behave on camera.

There are no guarantees that the person arrives is going to be perfect or doesn't have any issues but I do notice with the 2 interview styles, the guys that are applying are taking this a lot more serious and they see we are professional and its weeding out the good guys that have the right attitude from the guys that have the wrong attitude.

In your personal life, how do you tell the difference...I don't think someone who is going to date someone or chat with someone on a social media app is going to do a intense interview as we do, but I think in the "personal" world with all the crazy out there now, I think taking it slow, speaking with the person on the phone and on either FaceTime or Skype or Zoom is the best away of meeting at first, then meet up at a starbucks or public place until you feel that person is right for you. If that person truly likes you wants to be your friend, then it will happen. If you are going to do a one night stand on Grindr lets say, then it is what it is..do your thing, be safe and have fun but still take precaution.

And some extra dating advice is appreciated too. haha

So the gist of what I hear you saying about some of the personality disorders like bipolar is to look for whether the person is able to focus fairly easily on one thing at a time. They're not acting scatterbrained, distracted or frequently trying to multi-task. (And not doing a very good job at said multi-tasking.) I know that is incredibly over-simplified. It's much more complicated than that. But it's a starting point to look for.

Yes...this is correct. With experience you can tell upfront before hiring the guy if working with our studio is going to be a good fit or not. Sometimes, we take a gamble or the guy slips through and arrives here and has the "personality disorder", either we can tolerate it or we have to send the guy home and it also works the same for the guys.

We always have the best intentions in mind and we treat the guys with the outmost respect and we make sure they have good food to eat, clean safe environment to sleep and enjoy when we are not filming them so with that, some guys are NOT use to sitting at a dinner table, some guys are not use to having a "family" environment. Some guys just can't take the so called "normalcy". Or they realize that this isn't for them, filming porn is way to difficult, they bit off more then they can chew and its not for them...may it be in a studio setting with lights and cameras or having gay sex is just not for them (which they thought they can, and all they did was think about the money and not if they really can do this or not) so some guys just can't deal with it and that is okay with us because not every guy we are going to hire and bring down for filming is going to work out 100%.

Overall, the guys we hire appreciate the fact we feed them, we make sure they are safe, they have fun and we respect them and they respect us and 99% of the time, we film, get the job done, having fun doing it and enjoying the moment and our hard work had paid off at the end making the correct decision with whom is arriving and filming with our studio.

From reading the forum going back to your original gig of filming Broke Straight Boys-1, I know that you have always run a class operation and the boys seem to enjoy spending time with you and Eddie. It is currently apparent in the before and after videos. I love when Eddie often throws in a quip in the background. It does feel like a fun environment and even when it is a scene featuring two of what I consider to be gay models which isn't my porn preference, I always watch your interviews with the boys. I love your warm personalty and sense of humor.

Having you and Eddie back kind of reminds me of the TV show Dallas where the character of Bobby Ewing was killed off and missed a season and returned in a shower scene and it was all a dream. It's like you and Eddie were taking a nine year shower to return in 2020. Great to have you back and see the boys back on the traditional Broke Straight Boys futon.
