I've been a member of this site for a while, read and participated in many a forum discussion. Every now and again, I'll read a post scene comment that really makes me wonder, "Where is the Human Factor" when voicing an opinion about a model or a scene he's performed in?

Now, I'm not trying to get people agitated with some of the observations I will make but, it does make me wonder sometimes.
The general feeling is; people want to see fresh new faces, models with no prior experience in the adult film industry oh yeah and be straight, believably straight, or have non-typical gay type mannerisms. I get that!

What I find hard to appreciate is: when most of these criteria are met by the models presented, why, seemingly little consideration is given to things like; age, sexual experience, comfort level with certain aspects of "gay sex performance"? Even the willingness to present themselves for this kind of entertainment....even though they are being paid! The desire to get to "know the models as people" "humanize them beyond the scope of their performances" find out how they entertain themselves when not filming....there are a lot of human factors that people enjoy learning about these guys! But, when it comes to their performances.......sometimes, they can be treated like "Slabs of Beef" or criticized for the very qualities or features that make them Human in the first place? Ever just have a Bad Day at the job? I know I have! Sometimes it affects my performance that day too!

Over all, I'm just putting that out there because, it's something I think about:confused1:

This is a site created to lure "straight" guys into doing gay sex for money. Although it has changed quit a bit the main thing is this site is called "Broke Straight Boys". This is why I joined and I know many others as well. What bugs me the most is when I read a comment that the models "weren't into each other" or "not enough lip locking in the kiss" or "not enough rimming and toe sucking" for god sake these guys are supposed to be straight and/or bi so why should you expect them to make love to each other??? There are thousands of sites that are just that! Why would you expect to get the hot love making scenes from a site called Broke Straight Boys? that's just silly....

Peter, while you and I often disagree on matters, we are 100% in agreement here. I sometimes wonder if people realize what the concept of the site is that they signed up for??? There are endless sites featuring gay guys who do all those things that gay guys do.

Your observations are spot on Betu. I would never have wanted my overall proficiency at work to be judged by one of my off days. Some days we really shine at what we do. Other days we are somewhere in the middle and again other days we are not anywhere close to our best work. It's tough not to fall into being the armchair quarterback and expecting (or at least hoping for) A+ performances from every amateur model brought in. The same can be said for the staff who strive to maintain a level of excellence in the hiring, the pre-scene interviewing, the directing, camera work and editing. The expectation that all of those jobs and tasks of the whole team will all flow seamlessly together at all times is not realistic.

The inevitability that even veteran models are going to be paired sometimes with models who they have no chemistry with, or attraction to...or perhaps don't even like, should fall under the category of: Duh! Even some beloved veteran models who really care about doing a good job and not disappointing the fans, must have felt at one time or another like they were being asked to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. I'm sure the technical staff, no matter how skilled and proficient they may be, have felt the same way. lol

Long story short... In our critiques we should be cutting them more slack as individuals and fellow human beings. That said, again it's difficult for all of us to keep that in mind at all times and not fall into the trap you articulated above. We viewers are imperfect and human too. :)

Technically Peter, I disagree with you on the highlighted point. This is a site created to lure gay men and others, of various sexual orientation who, enjoy Watching "Broke Straight Boys" engage in sexual congress.

I mean, would you open a doughnut shop to attract people who like to make doughnuts, or people who enjoy eating them?

Betu,

On purely logical grounds, I am constrained to defend poor Peter, on this one. While this is, of course, a site created to lure gay men and others who enjoy watching straight boys have gay sex; it must also necessarily be (perforce and ab initio) a site which induces straight boys to HAVE gay sex, for money - - - as a condition precedent. Viz., the doughnuts must be baked, ere they can be tasted! (You can't have one. . . without the other!)

As to the matter at hand ~

Dear Betu,

I think your post is absolutely correct and well-taken, and agree with both you and Tampa that our models ought to be treated with (and spoken to in tones of) kindness and consideration. I've written many a post, over the years, inveighing against the "ATM" or "cash-and-carry" model of erotic-video patronage, which gives people the sense that: 1.) Being a model on a site like Broke Straight Boys is a "job like any other" (It is NOT); and, 2.) The fact that the models have been paid to appear, and the members have paid to see the models, means. . . that the models must do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING corresponding to any given member's tastes. ("Do a handstand! Ride a unicycle! Recite the complete works of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, with your scene-mate's tongue down your throat!") This tendency is baleful, and you are right to point that out.

Likewise, I sympathize with MikeYank and Peter, who rightly point out that this site was created with a certain purpose and aesthetic - - - and this will necessarily condition the performances. Now, I am one of those latecomers and ne'er-do-well hangers-on who showed up, just for the sake of a few cute men (ONE cute man, in particular - Jason, I love you still XOXOXOXO): and I LOVE displays of affection. But, given the name and nature of the site, it is only fair that the straight-boy fetish gets it fair innings. And so, to all those who criticize the models for not making love in the most passionate way, I say. . . BE PATIENT. We are, after all, guests in the anteroom of Broke Straight Boys LOL!

I think there is plenty of room here for everyone to enjoy himself (or herself) without people getting all uptight about a single performance he doesn't like. . . .

I can appreciate both perspectives given here as well. One of the greatest things to me about being human is: I cannot change the way people think about ANYTHING, most times, it's not my position in life to even try....what is important however is.....Awareness! When I read something in the News or hear something that doesn't affect me directly....I am still made aware. Ultimately, awareness helps me be a more compassionate human being, and I try to apply that wherever and when ever I can.......

When I read this Betu, it's exactly how I feel when I read or see tragedies that occur around the world. I remember Jon used to get pissed at us "americans" for not commenting or caring about whats happening in other countries. I'm a caring and passionate human being, and my heart does ache for the people that have or are going through struggles in this world. But without sounding cold or heartless, they don't directly effect my life!! My worries are for my immediate family and close friends who are family. Their health, happiness and lives are what matter to me. My health and happiness is what matters to me! I am responsible for me first, then my families needs come next..

I totally agree, Ambi. :thumbup1:

Good points, peter. Jon would often post a link to a story about an event which happened and excoriate us for not responding. I would point out to him that we had other sources - papers, tv and/or radio news, the internet, so it was not as if we hadn't heard about the event before we saw his post. Moreover there are so many outlets for one to express one's views on a matter that just because we didn't post on the forum thread did not mean we were not concerned about the event and/or its ramifications on the world in which we live.
