Just read this today. The US has lifted the ban to transport crude oil to other countries. It will begin as early as this August.

God help us. All I can think of is the number of wars that have been started between countries over the possession and entitlement of oil.

I have nothing else to say.

The US has exported oil in the past, the sad part of it for me is that we need the oil here but the filthy rich know they can make more money if they export it. The 1% used to do everything to support and improve our country but now they only care about themselves and making more money. I don't understand how people can be so heartless and let the lust for wealth drives their life. While we have politicians in charge who are more concerned with protecting their personal wealth and the wealth of their supporters we will have no hope for our future.

The oil in the US takes much more work to refine than from other areas. The oil in the tar sands is also expensive to remove so oil has to be over $70 a barrel just to break even.

We do produce a lot of oil here and there are many countries that are still demanding it more and more (see China).

Then you have the Middle East which has the best oil as it takes little to refine it for use. So one oil gets cheaper by the barrel, they will buy the cheap stuff to refine.

God, we all love that crude stuff! It goes so well on everything. We will never wean ourselves from it. Other energy sources? Tell that to President Ford who first said we should be doing that. Big Oil tells us otherwise and we listen to what they say.

Maybe the US is anticipating problems in the Middle East and also with Russia, so they are opening up their doors for the European customers ?

Welcome to living in an oligarchical system, where the rich minority rule the poor majority; where laws are made to disenfranchise minority groups and the media constantly uses politically and socially driven, high emotional and sensational tactics in order to further divide the people on moral/political/economical issues, hoping we'll be too emotionally caught up in whatever issue they're arguing on tv to actually notice the amount of corruption that is running rampant in our society and our politics.

Try living over here where diesel is currently £1.35 a litre and normal gas is around £1.28 a litre.

I AGREE....and I am wondering of those countries that we are exporting to.....HOW MANY are reciprocating, in so way or another??

I TOTALLY agree, BenBen!! We DO need to START looking out for US FIRST, THEN, and only THEN when we are stable, should we offer the help abroad.

The only reason it's so cheap here is because we keep it that way. It's an artificial cost that in no way represents the true price of production. While gas is incredibly expensive in Europe, it's also a more representative of the true cost of using fossil fuels.

Bobbity! Long time no see. Welcome back!

One other little secret that the U.S. government has tried to keep on the down low (because they knew they would take a pounding in the press from the general public) is that we have been selling Alaskan oil to Japan for many years now. In the 80's Japan really started pushing the U.S. to sell them Alaskan crude. They hoped they could wean themselves away from the political, military and financial headache of dealing in Middle Eastern affairs just for the oil. The U.S. rebuffed that request for quite a while. Then very quietly we finally agreed and started exporting domestically produced oil to them while still importing oil from far and wide for ourselves.

I was going to bring that up. Thanks for doing so. The vast majority of the Alaskan oil goes to Japan and some other Asian countries as well as our Pacific territories. It has for a very long time.

Guess the subsidy must be in sacrifice for other services, such as health for the poor. Just saying

I believe many other countries have significantly higher gasoline taxes not only as a revenue source, but also to cut down on demand, and encourage the production of more fuel efficient cars.

In the U.S. it has been 18.4 cents a gallon since 1993.

Hi Stowie. Yes you are correct. The majority of the money we pay for gasoline is taxes, which is the same for cigarettes, liquor and any other of lifes "evils". Regarding fuel efficient cars, well there are some electric cars on the road over here but not many. We have a silly government who try to cut down the use of vehicles, but do not improve the alternatives to get to work or from one place to another (our public transport system is old and decrepid). The govt also advocates people not to smoke as it is bad for peoples health - to which i agree and they also now have a drink awareness campaign to highlight the evils of drink. So they are actually cutting off the hands that feeds them.

You cheeky little...^.^ We're not even going to open that can of worms. LOL.

Also, Hi Tampa! Missed you guys whilst I was gone! It's nice to see that most of you guys are still here. I know this is way off topic but can anyone tell me where Ms. K went? I haven't seen her post at all since I've been back.

And just to stay on topic on this thread, I think this is the direction we should go in terms of energy:

The need for crude oil would become practically obsolete if we could integrate ideas like this into our cities and our homes. Just some food for thought.

What's up dude - does the truth hurt..

Nah, it's nothing I can't take. Believe it or not, you're not the first to criticize our joke of a health care system. Though, tbh, not sure I take too well to being called "dude". You may refer to me as dudette or simply bobbity, plz and thank you.

To put Jon's numbers into context for us on this side of the pond... 1 gallon is 3.78 liters. As of today the British pound is trading at $1.70 per. Or 0.58 pence per dollar. Yes. The pound is worth more than the dollar in value. It costs $1.70 to buy 1 British pound.

1.35 x 3.78= 5.10 BP

So right now it costs 5.10 BP to buy a gallon of diesel gas. 5.10 BP divided by 0.58 pence (value of dollar)= $8.79 per gallon for diesel.

Regular gas: 1.28 BP per liter x 3.78= 4.83 BP per gallon. 4.83 BP divided by 0.58 pence = $8.32 per gallon of regular gas. (Or petrol as they call it over there. lol)

So to bottom line it:

Where Jon lives, a gallon of diesel is $8.79

A gallon of regular gas is $8.32

How do you manage to drive your car anywhere Jon? I had no idea you were rich. lol xo

Sorry honey I though you were a bloke. Nice to have some chicks on here again xx

LOL do I sound american

no one in the united states would use domestic crude oil. the sulfur content is bad for air. we have been shipping it to japan and they exchange it for sweet crude which we use.
our friends in Europe now rely on Russia and the middle east. we should help them make international decisions without having to worry about keeping the factories running.
