I live in central New Jersey and I experienced my first earthquake on Tuesday afternoon. I am retired and a night person. So I was sleeping on my sofa in the living room. Around 2pm, my apartment sort of moved. Very strange feeling and new to me. I looked around and saw a four foot artificial plant vibrating rapidly. I wasn't totally awake at the time, but sort of concluded we experienced an earthquake. Once I got up and watched the news I was in awe of the power (energy) involved. The event happened in Virginia and I was feeling it in New Jersey. People in Maine felt it. We (Mankind) have harnessed some power, but nothing even close to this.

on this coast, few people would notice a 5.8 earthquake from 300 to 400 miles away.
there is nothing like being awaken by the earth moving violently.

stay save!
hope you all on the east coast are spared the full force of the hurricane.

I felt it a little but nothing like people to the south of me. I live on a major fault line and avlot of people do not realize that the east coast is over due for a major quake. The part of NY that I a from has what is called an escarpment, that was caused by a major earthquake and the glaciers millions of years ago. We had a 4.0 a couple of years ago, life went on. A geologist said it is because of the rock that the east coast is made from, it is supposedly more solid and can absorb the shock easier.
They are also saying that yesterdays quake could be a precursor to a larger quake that is coming. Hopefully not, unless I am having sex at the time and can say did I make the earth shake for you (lol).
Seriously, I hope everyone is well and we do not have another. I will take a blizzard anyday over an earthquake, flood, mudslide etc. When I was younger my family was at Yellowstone Park when it was on fire, we watched animals run for their lives as the lodges etc burned as we were making our way out. That was horrifying to me as a child.

I am glad that hardly anyone got hurt during the earthquake. Maybe now Congress can see the importance on funding earthquake studies for the country especially on predicting when they will occur.
