Some "direction" from Director: Q&A

Welcome to the forum Johnny (new director) as, I don't recall having been a member to this site during a time when the director participated in the forum.

I started this thread because I have a few general questions and hope that other members might also have questions to share regarding the "direction" the site is going. I am curious as to what I can expect as a viewer but what I have enjoyed thus far has been: (1) The variety of types of guys. (2) The better sound and video. (3) The better camera angles and voyeuristic quality of some scenes. (4) Getting a bit more of a models personality through the "banter."

I have picked up on: Models "coming in with a game plan...." for a scene. More experienced models being very instrumental in helping newbies through a scene and making it not only a great viewing, but a good experience over all. (Specifically Jason/Zander Floyd). I am a very visual and tactile person. Camera eye/angles are important for my experience. What looks "organic" in a scene works far better for me than a rehearsed depiction of an act. Will the models be bringing their own styles and experiences to a scene or will it all be directed? Will there consideration be given to pairing of models or just....Who's Up next. .random? Will models have any say in what may work in a scene for them?

I would just like an idea of the direction if it is going to be a great departure from what it is/has been lately or subtle changes in style?

Betu, I was thrilled to discover that Johnny has posted both on the scene page and on the forum, and that he is very aware of the comments and criticisms offered and he said he has changed both his "hand" in each scene, and he will cease talking during the sex, while keeping the pre and post sex talk alive. According to Sha, these new Johnny scenes will appear in early February.

My personal hope is that he will introduce us to some total newbies to gay porn and gay sex in general. I became a fan of this site when David was the director, and the models were apparently nervous, and totally inexperienced at getting naked and having sex with a guy on camera. And I would get turned on watching them get turned on, often much to their own surprise.

I'd love for Johnny to go back to these types of guys, rather than guys who have appeared on other sites, and may not be quite as straight as the title "Broke Straight Boys" implies.

I share the excitement of having a new director with us who is looking to shake things up a bit. I had many criticisms of Clay's vision and style from time to time. His scenes became very predictable, mechanical and by the numbers. The sets were getting dusty (in the metaphorical sense) from the models staying within the same old lines and not being allowed to veer into new territory. In spite of this I have to give Clay his props because his work did help Broke Straight Boys win the Cybersocket award. I know that many of us voted for Ian and Broke Straight Boys I thank Ian for mentioning the awards earlier so that I and many others could vote.

So we do owe Clay a thank you for his work here. I'm sure he worked very hard, in stressful situations, on tight schedules that we can only imagine but not fully appreciate unless we are walking in his shoes. He did do some good work and left us some great scenes to remember his work by.

We get to spend a lot of time together talking, sharing stories and really getting to know the actual models...their REAL personalities. We have come to really enjoy getting to know each individual personality that comes into the house and want to share that REAL personality as much as possible with you the viewer. This can be tricky at times as all personalities differ...some can be harder to truly expose. Many people have commented on the lengths of the interviews...keep in mind this time does NOT cut into the actual sex portion of the video...we are basically trying to give you MORE than you previously got with a real look at what it would be like to truly get to know the models...as we get to do in the house ourselves. To try and make as many members happy as possible...I have cut down the length of most interviews. One important thing to note...the talking and joking during the actual sex has been eliminated completely as I completely agree with many members that it can be a major distraction when trying to "get into" watching that portion of the scene. I will continue to use this unscripted loose type format in my interview style as it really seems to help bring out the models REAL personalities. I will continue to post about different aspects of the shoots, changes we felt necessary and other insights into our vision for the site on this thread so it can be contained to one area...for those who are interested. Thanks for your insight. I Like the pre-scene interviews the way you do them, my only problem was I thought they were too long, even considering that they didn't cut into the sex time. But the more recent shorter interviews are great and I agree that we seem to be getting a more realistic view of the guys than with the usual staged questions prevalent in the past. And from the get-go I praised and supported the post-scene brief talks - so much better than just fading to black. So thank you for shortening the pre- interviews and bringing us the post- talks.

I have enjoyed how we are getting to know a bit more about the models' (especially the newer one's) through the use of the pre scene interviews. I know that hearing from the model about how the scene was for them in some way, has also completed my enjoyment. Most of the time I hear how a model may have enjoyed themselves more than they thought they might. I am also glad that you've been so receptive and open to the various concerns expressed by members! Thank you Johnny for all your comments. They are music to my ears. The interviews and the resulting model-viewer bonds felt by fans here on Broke Straight Boys, are something I see as unique to the majority of sites out there. It's one of the keys to Broke Straight Boys's success in not just attracting members, but retaining them for as long as they do. Through the intros prior to the scene (and now with the bonus of some post scene conversation) we get to know the models a little bit, learn a little bit of their backgrounds and get a truer sense of their personalities. I really applaud the fact that you're trying to give them enough time in the intros so that we viewers get a real sense of how they are off-camera. I'm thrilled that you get that Johnny.

Scenes with cold openings that just start off with kissing and end with the camera panning to the ceiling are all over the net. If a majority of Broke Straight Boys members wanted that, they could find it all over the net for free. I don't mind being a member of a pay site like Broke Straight Boys because it offers me something I can't find anywhere else. The wonderful staff of the site who we know as real people and not just content providers, the forum and all the online friendships that follow, are just some of the perks. SHOOTING STYLE AND OUR IDENTITY-
I wanted to explain the shooting style of the videos and our vision going forward. Although I have shot MANY different styles in the past, with our content here we are going with what's called "gonzo/reality" style shooting. With gonzo...there are less cuts, less set shots and more flowing camera movement. It pairs well with the reality feel we are going for as this is our identity...professional quality reality style shooting with good lighting and resolution. With gonzo, it gives you - the viewer - more of a sense of actually being in the room with the models. Sort of like your eyes would do if you were actually there. Sometimes your eyes would look up rather quickly to see an expression on a face and then back down to a penetration shot. Gonzo incorporates a more flowing type shoot style from shot to shot verses frequent cuts into set shots (as in features) this style may feel different at first depending on what you watch, but is the style that gives you more of a sense of being there in the room...adding to the realism of each scene.

HARD DICKS AND ERECTIONS-
You may notice in some of the videos a completely soft dick at the beginning of a blow job. Very often in porn, the thing to do is to start the blowjob (for about 10 seconds) and pan up to the models face and cut. This allows the model to jerk himself off and get a full hard on. Then come back with your next tight shot of the sucking and BINGO...the model is completely hard in that five second face shot. Ha ha. I hear or all the time, how "fake" the sex is in porn...and how obvious that is. With this reality style shooting we are doing, I'd like to give you as much realism as possible. I do understand that there are so many members with so many different tastes as far as what can turn them on. Many of our members have certain little (or big) fetishes. I want to try to throw in a little of that to help satisfy all those people's desires WITHOUT taking away from the overall scene for the viewers who don't. You may notice some strange angled shots that may feel a little off to the viewer without those same fetishes. For example, I may go higher, lower or wider on a shot in order to frame a foot or feet. This is done intentionally and just long enough that the viewer can see the thing that really "does it" for them. I have gotten some foot licking and armpit licking as well (very limited) that will add to those particular viewers needs. If you are a viewer without those same fetishes, the shots may seem a little off or different...it's not a major part of any shoot so it shouldn't be a big distraction, but keep in mind I'm just trying to make as many people happy as possible. I'd like to also throw in The occasional foot fucking as part of a scene (I did so in one of the upcoming College Dudes scenes) however this won't count as an actual sex position or take away from the length of sex during a scene...it will just be a bonus. For the members WITH these fetishes, I hope I can make you happy and for the members WITHOUT...I hope it doesn't take away for the scene and maybe introduce you to something you may just happen to find sexy. The members did comment on how they would like to see more butt shots...well I heard you loud and clear and have done so...it's hard to remember EVERYTHING that everyone wants or include it all in every scene but I'm doing my best to satisfy everyone the best I can.

At the risk of sounding like I'm on the payroll...lol...I think you're seeing why so many of us are taken with this site. It's not just the porn of course. It's also the company culture where the models are treated with respect and dignity and the staff show those same considerations to each other. It's very much what you would not expect based on all of the stereotypes and even real life tales told to us by others who have experienced the darker sides of the industry on other sites firsthand.

One thing I wanted to compliment you on in the still photos is that you have some pics of genital on genital contact. What I mean by that is when model's dick and/or scrotum is touching those of another model. In some ways I find it more intimate than oral sex. It's especially intriguing for me on a site like Broke Straight Boys where the premise/fantasy is that many of the models are straight. Thanks here too Johnny and a lot of what Beth said! Even though I was making a little joke about the comparison to Alfred Hitchcock with reference to the "cameo/hand" appearances, it was actually a compliment after reading your explanation of the "Gonzo" shooting style!

Hitchcock being known for his cameo appearances and use of a camera made to move in a way that mimics a person's gaze, forcing viewers to engage in a form of voyeurism."

On a more technical note: This may actually be a question for ChuckBluMedia. You did mention the HD camera you will be using. Not only will the quality improve tremendously, the file size will also increase tremendously. I download select scenes. Playback is better as streaming can sometimes be affected on my end by high cable internet traffic. Besides that, I like to save scenes to an external hard drive. Space/down load times are also affect by the larger files. Is there a way to have a pull down menu in the "Down Load" choices that would also give a "file size" to choose. It currently says: HD, High Quality, Mp4 etc. I have seen menus that give ranges from Low-HD and file sizes for each choice. I downloaded a scene from College Dudes that was much larger than I remember them being, now that HD is used. Any thoughts?

Yes...and thank you - I'm very familiar with frottage and do try to put touches of that in both my stills and in the videos...I'm actually making notes here for the next round of shoots...I will add some extra frottage in at least one scene for the people that like that. I'm glad you like those specific pictures...and lucky for you I try to add that type of picture in EVERY photo set. One thing I do remember shooting recently is more "milking" and rubbing together AFTER both have cum...really holding that shot LONGER than before...I have a feeling you will LOVE it based on what your saying. There are so many things to try and include to satisfy everyone's specific needs...and I'm doing my best to throw in everything I can to do so.
