Pirates Beware!

Yeah. I re-read more better. I thought it was just an unnamed actor who used the pic and missed that they said it was the person's own image...

That pisses me off to no end. I actually got cease-and-desist notices from MTV for some dance clips that I was using for marketing purposes. THEY WERE VIDEOS OF ME!

I think there should be a law that any image or video of YOU is yours to distribute freely. If you've signed over rights to the images, it should be treated as a breach of contract instead of a federal crime.

And I hate that they're willing to destroy a persons' life by suing them for unreasonable amounts of money. Do you think those people will EVER recover financially from nearly a million dollars of debt? Especially in this economy.

Agreed, it's not right that pirates do what they do. But the impacts that it has on their corporation are nowhere near as devastating as the impacts they have on that one persons' life.

The lawyer quoted even states that he wishes it didn't always have to be a federal crime but in the case of the prostitute, he had a contracted relationship with Corbin Fisher whereby they owned the images. If he had different photographs taken and used the tag 'as seen on Corbin Fisher, he'd probably be okay but he took the lazy way and is paying...

But regardless. They're images of him! I don't think anyone should be able to sue you for copyright violation when they're images of you. Breach of contract, maybe. But copyright?! Bagh.

I understand why the laws are they way that they are. It just blows me away that you can get in trouble for posting a picture of yourself on the internet!

If you didn't pay at all to take it, if the picture was for a specific use on a website that you have no financial stake in, and if you are trading off the website's image to make money, yeah, it's pretty serious...

Don't like the rules? Don't play the game, simple as that.

The whole copyright thing is confusing, but the CF model, Greg, signed an agreement that he wouldn't use pics taken of him by CF for his financial benefit. Well, he broke the rules. He especially broke them by using the pics for solicitation of his ass. CF sells porn, but they aren't pimping their models on the street. CF certainly wouldn't want prostitution associated with the company.

It's too bad. Greg was a hot little model....

Well said. I did start playing by the rules after we incorporated a "for marketing purposes" clause into the agreements for all of our dancers. But that's beside the point.

I'm not agreeing with what he did. And I'm also not saying that it should go completely unpunished.

I'm just saying that system is outrageously flawed in favor for corporations. A debt like that (for most people) is a hurdle that will probably leave him broke for decades, all while the heads of these stations sit big selling videos featuring the guy they just laid a financial death sentence on. You can't deny the irony in that.

Hey dude, now that the world has seen your dance moves, how's about sharing it with Broke Straight Boys members. lol x

But if he made $50 million by doing this, that's $50 million he stole. They should have made him pay more.

I disagree. The $50 million he could have made as an escort wouldn't have directly affected CF's ability to make money. He didn't take it to a competitor that would have stolen business from the site. Sure, there may be the few that are so appalled by it that they'd unsubscribe, but my thought is if you're subscribed to a porn site and looking at escort sites that probably isn't the case. If anything, it probably directed more traffic to the site. How often do you think they get the chance to see an escort in action before they throw their money down?

Moral issues aside, I think this probably created a mutually beneficial marketing situation strictly from an income standpoint. It'd be interesting to see if there was an increase in subscriptions after he started posting his ads.

I'm not going to lie. I wasn't a star by any means... The show was centered around a few people and I was a student of one of them.

I'll see if any of the videos survived the content censorship :(
