After moving south to attend college years ago I am not so fond of Ohio anymore either. I have a lot of extended family up there so I still try to visit fairly often. I LOVE Cedar Point!! I am grateful that I grew up in the midwest in the sense that the people there are sophisticated and ingrained with a good work ethic. Once I moved south though it was a decision that I have never regretted. Visiting there is great. Living there in the winter...not so much.

For all you Ohioans and midwesterners I was curious about the level of homophobia up there now. When I was growing up there in the 70's and early 80's and attending high school, there was pervasive homophobia. You didn't dare even rest your hand on another guy's shoulder for fear it might be misconstrued. Being suspected of being gay was social suicide and physcially dangerous for you. You just didn't risk any physical display of affection unless you knew them very well and it was behind closed doors. And I'm not even talking about in a sexual context.

The handshake routine that follows with a partial hug, keeping both right arms out in front, was about the most daring thing you could hope to get away with in public. Except maybe in airports. Are people up there still real homophobic and uptight about any same sex shows of affection? Or gay people in general? Have attitudes mellowed any?
