Last Friday I had a chance to join with up to a million people to see the last shuttle (Atlantis) lift off from launch pad 39A. Having been a fan of space exploration for many years, this was a dream come true. I had the fortune to see the shuttle land at Edwards Air Force Base in Calif. but until now, I had never seen a launch.
I arrived in Orlando, Florida on July 7. I had invited David to come join me on this quests, but as this is their busy time to film, he was not able to make it. I got up at 1:40 am Friday morning to begin my trek to Titusville to find the perfect spot to see and photograph the launch. Upon arriving in Titusville it did not take me long to find the spot I wanted, on the new bridge that overlooks the bay with a perfect view of the space center and the launch pad. I took a couple of night photos of the shuttle, but they did not come out that good as I was using slow film (yes, that's right FILM) for bright light. After taking a few shots, I went back to the car and took some zzzz's for about 2 hours before going back. For the next 4 hours I waited with thousands of others until the launch. Words can't describe the excitement all of us felt as the final seconds ticked down.
It is a shame that for the next 3-5 years we will need to pay Russia millions of dollars per astronaut to have them send Americans into space. Our new launch vehicles is still 3-5 years away from flying.
