Caribou - Great analogy (as Peter said). I think what you wrote and is now bold underline is exactly what played out between Chandler and Danny.

For memory row fans, here are a couple of pics (Billy Booth played Tommy and Jay North was the little Menace, Dennis. Both of the young adult shots are from the collegiate days which would fit as a likely comparison to our two stars of this scene.
