In a couple of months Jan 2020, an event will happen on British TV that I thought would still be a few years off. A dance competition called dancing on ice will hit our screens with the first same sex dance couple. This is a celebrity show with celebs being matched with professional ice skaters. In this case H from Steps, Ian Watkins (not sure if Steps ever made it big in the US, but they were boy/girl group from late 90s early 2000s) and professional ice skater Matt Evers will dance together as a couple. This is fantastic news and is big over here because they have beaten their big dance competitor Strictly come dancing (dancing with the stars is the US version) to this, although Strictly did a couple of weeks ago have its first professional same sex couple dance. This I think is move in the right direction are there anything similar happening across the pond, would love to know.

I don’t think so but there sure are a lot of gay ice skaters. Maybe they will do it here. Britain often seems to lead the way.

Yes Rep I think you are right on this, Britain often does things first so let's hope US follows at some point. In fact you could probably claim this as a first too for the US as Matt Evers is an American ice skater.

In regards to openness about sexuality we still have that societal Puritan versus secular cultural battle going on over here on our side of the pond. So it's up to the Europeans to push the envelope for us first. Then we finally start playing catch up. haha

nothing like that happening in the US, but I recall seeing clips of DWTS-Australia having a same sex dance couple (albiet one was a drag queen Courtney Act). There were a couple dances where they danced as two boys. still progress though. plus I think they almost won and got the highest score that season. the us is always the last. 'Merica!

There is an old saying that rings true in my mind. Australia got the convicts, we got the Puritans. Australia got the better deal.

With a large gay community, Australia often leads the way. Interestingly Courtney Act is not unknown to us here. A few years back she won Celebrity Big Brother.

I've heard that there is a big divide among male skaters: the male figure skaters tend to be gay and bottoms, and the male ice hockey players tend to be straight and tops. Although I can envision a male hockey player fucking a male figure skater. A flip fuck might be a pleasant surprise for both.

I don’t know but I’d fuck a butch hockey player over a nelly figure skater any day.

Certainly where sport is concerned the US seems to lead the way. In football (soccer as you know it in the US) there have been openly gay players, Robbie Roger's of LA Galaxy led the way back in 2013. You also have Colin Martin of Minnesota United and David Testo former professional soccer player who came out after he retired in 2011. Not so many have the courage over here mainly because of fear of a backlash against them. Case in point is the sad story of Justin Fashanu who came out back in the 1990s and within a year of this had committed suicide in East London, this was partly due to coming out but also because a 17 year old had made allegations against him of sexual assault.

Ok thought I'd give you an update on the professional same sex couple dance that happened on Strictly Come Dancing the other week. Many took to social media to say how moved and pleased they were that this happened. However the BBC are now having to investigate because 200 complaints have been received to say how disgusting it was to see two men dancing together at prime time on TV. I thought the UK was better than that and I am truly ashamed that such narrow minded individuals still are allowed to voice such bigotry. I say bring on dancing on ice and I hope Ian Watkins and Matt Evers do really well in this competition and show the way for other programmes to follow suit both here in UK and in the US.

Unfortunately I can't say I'm too surprised by that Foxyman. Still though, to get only 200 and some complaints is not as bad as I might have expected. It's certainly far less than what we would see here.

Yes Tampa I am sure you are right it's just when you watch this dance it's both moving and beautiful and I just dont understand why people can get so offended by this. I do wonder if it had been two women whether there would have been so many complaints

I was very fortunate to have found this video in my travels today. I think it's very timely and serendipitous to acknowledge within this thread.

This video is in French and doesn't have English subtitles. But please don't let that alone deter you from watching it. My own knowledge of French is very rudimentary and I have to settle for being able to pick out a few key words and phrases here and there and follow the images, context and voice inflections to get me through the spoken dialog. But there's a whole lot more being spoken in a universal language that requires not translation.

I was very taken and overcome when the male judge on the left made a very impassioned condemnation of violence against gay people.

Tampa thanks so much for finding this beautiful dance video from France. Europe in many ways leads the way on many fronts for this kind of thing. Although like you I do not speak French (in fact I dont speak any other language and that is much to my shame these days as I really wish I could especially when something so moving as this appears) Clearly these two guys are very much in love and you can see this in their dance interpretations and what a great song to dance to. I was really moved by this. Hopefully the ice dancers in January will be able to create something as creative as this, although I doubt it will be so tenderly executed.

I'm glad you liked it Foxyman!

I'm semi-fluent in Spanish and I studied Latin for 4 years. With French being a romance language derived from Latin, I can understand bits and pieces of it. One thing I wanted to point out is that on the big screen version of the YouTube page it says, "Guillaume & Arthur stun France’s Got Talent judges with beautiful dance against homophobia." In the small screen version here it cuts off the rest of the English title to the video. lol

Arthur says that himself in French before starting the dance. If you listen closely you can hear him say at the end of one sentence, " contre l'homophobie." In as many words, "We're here to dance against homophobia."

Okay! Here's another one. And it's in Italian! haha But it has English subtitles. Yay!
