Following on from Buckeye1's loss of power thread, I thought I'd open one for us all to discuss the crazy summer everyone seems to be having weather wise. Here in the UK we've had heavy rain for the last 6 weeks and there is no respite either. More heavy rain forecast for the next 2 weeks - damn it.

Surprisingly enough Wimbledon has not been much affected this year. The rain must have been deflected around the city. Come on Andy Murray in tomorrow's mens final

You Yanks are complaining of 100+ degs in NYC and mad storms in Ohio to name a few. Today's news reports that 50+ people have died in floods in Krasnodar in Russia. When are we going to get back to normal ?

We're actually having a normal summer here. We've had some rain. The high temperature has been running in the mid to upper 90s. We've hit 100 a couple of times, but that's normal. I don't like the heat, but compared to last year, it's not bad. A possibility of rain in the form of afternoon showers is in the forecast for the next week or so. My yard is still green and the only thing I have had to water this year is the azaleas. Our lakes are at normal levels. I can live with this.

Crazy weather is the norm. Normal weather only exists in the statistics, when an average is calculated.

seasons

If you get tired of the seasons/variety, come to Puerto Rico. Its pretty much the same every day, except for the occasional tropical storm. I do miss the seasons though, being originally from the midwest.

It's great to have 4 seasons and a mild sea climate. Winters not too cold, summers not too hot...

Anyone that complains about the weather has a good life. No hunger, a roof above...

Well, after a month of drought and above average temps, we got over an inch of rain yesterday here at our house. Don't know how much the fire areas got, or if any. It looks like we are settling in to more typical July weather, for the next week at least.

I'm not sure if it was the sudden downpour, but the water main on the street next to ours erupted last night causing the street to buckle. We were without water well into the wee hours of the morning and suffered occasional sleep interruption due to the noisy equipment. Woke up to sputtering fixtures, but fresh, clean water is running out so it's all fixed now.

Apparently - according to those with degrees in things that I mispronounce and mispell - the Jet Stream has slipped south and so we in the UK are stuck with crap weather. The reason for this (and my intention is not to 'bash' America) is because of the heatwave being experienced on the East coast of the States which has created high pressure, thus increasing the speed of the Jet Stream, and thus sending it further south!

For once it seems they're not blaming the UK weather directly on global warming - however I would imagine that the pundits over in the States are blaming it on Global Warming.

Can any of our American friends chime in on what your experts are saying is the cause of your extreme weather?

Good question on the source. I took enough stats in college to dull my brain such that I believe variations and extremes are to be expected. Yet, im still a bit sympathetic to the notion of warming when greenland and the north pole are melting like butter on a frying pan.

^ Indeed. There has to be variations - even to the extremes - to produces averages. The extremes here in the UK are to the extreme of breaking records since they began keeping them. Most places here have had double the seasonal average rainfall every month for the last 3 months. I'm still 50/50 on Global Warming...

It would be sad if we only know it once we have passed the tipping point. Breaking records year after year might be a signal something is wrong. Meanwhile the glaciers melt. Im all for econ growth, we must have it, the challenge is finding the balance. Leaving behind a mess is not a legacy I wish for.

After a couple of very cold winters and some moderate and even one very wet summer, they have changed the term "global warming" to "climate change". Be careful when listening to these "experts". The "experts" a few decades ago were predicting another ice age. Climates change and we go through difficult years and good years alike. Just be glad you are not putting up with the heat wave they are dealing with parts of the U.S. We had it here in Texas last year. This year has been pretty average for us in this part of the state.

I think it was a mistake to change from 'global warming' to 'climate change'. If it IS man-made, then I think that 'global warming' sounds like it's man-made. 'Climate change' has more of a 'natural cycle' kind of feel to it - which is what I'm more inclined to think is actually going on - it's part of a huge natural cycle.

Since they have not proven that it is caused by man, I think that's the way they are headed, a natural cycle. We'll see. The "experts" can change their minds as quickly as the weather changes.

No one has proved it is man made but no one knows what happened prior to and after the Ice ages either - because we were not here. Mother Nature is much more powerful than mankind and if it chooses to play up and cause havoc, play up and cause havoc it will.
