Wow, I didn't realize how many of my fav models from the 1980s and 1990s were taken by AIDS. I read that one of them, Sparky O'Toole, was a member of a twink cast for a small gay porn site, whose infected director had unprotected sex with all of them and killed them all. I regularly contribute to amFAR, a great organization which over the years has funded research with successes in controlling the disease (note how AIDS disappears as the cause of death after the 1990s) and now is closing in on hopefully eliminating the disease altogether. Just a few weeks ago 23 year old Alex Rim a/k/a Alex Riley passed away with no cause of death disclosed with Helix scenes so recent that they had not even been released. It is sad to see the lives of all of these beautiful young men end so prematurely.

So sad to hear, my heart just breaks for him and his family. I watched a bit of the linked video and I remember a few of those guys. I recently watched "It's a Sin", I was crying and pissed off at the same time, I couldn't watch the series in one sitting as I was so emotional. I couldn't even imagine having to live through that time. I was born in 79 so I do remember it being talked about as I grew up a stones throw from Provincetown. Thank God that we now have medicines that can help prevent and treat this epidemic.
Of course the big killer is drugs. The causes of drug use are multiple but 1 large cause sadly is self low esteem & self loathing. In my opinion using one's body is no different from using your mind or the arts but sadly remains negative wrt porn or even non porn centered on the naked body.

Super sad. The biggest contributor for our guys passing away is definitely drugs. We always try to help them and talk to them but it is very hard to help someone who is too far down the rabbit hole.

So true. Nowadays with porn stars and models if it is not HIV like it was in the 80's and 90's, it's now drugs or suicide. (Although sometimes the drugs themselves can be the instrument of suicide or accidental death.)
I think Br is on the right track with the reasoning behind so many suicides in the industry. Namely the low self-esteem and self-loathing that sometimes come to haunt models later on. That's going to depend on the mindset of the individual of course. Some will take it in their stride by using their body as just a job to bring in an income, while others will feel literally and figuratively too overexposed to the rest of humanity. They may have feelings of being uniquely unprotected and vulnerable to the outside world. (Even to those who will never know of, hear of, or see any of their work.) Obviously there is no one size fits all answer to the root cause of all of these issues. The human psyche is too complex and varying from one individual to another.
Of course another cause of lost souls we've already discussed here in the past is the sometimes horrific treatment of models by certain studios, as well as some of the darker sides to the meat grinder gay porn industry in general. If one has the misfortune of getting caught up in the machinations of certain very selfish and unscrupulous individuals of some other studios, there's no doubt in my mind that you can often come out scarred and/or messed up for life. Heck. They even say some of the very same things about the commercial mainstream non-porn film industry and the treatment of actors.
But we have had models who filmed here, left for what they thought might be greener pastures (or simply just additional work and money) at another site. Then they sometimes come back here looking almost like some kind of shell-shocked war refugee. (Grateful and incredibly relieved to be back here in the comfort, safety and sanity of the Broke Straight Boys studio.) Sometimes they try to convey undetailed horror stories of what life is like and accepted as routine and normal at some of those other studios.
To those newer readers of the forum I'll say quickly that we were never told of very specific allegations of wrongdoing by specific people in the outside porn industry. And that's on purpose. Because otherwise that could leave the model (as well as the Broke Straight Boys site) open to lawsuits for slander, defamation of character, etc. While allegations of libel and slander and the like can't win in court if they are proven to be true...not many 18-28 year olds have the extra money to hire a lawyer, pay court fees, etc, and go to court against a corporation with deeper pockets. Plus unless you have audio or video proof (or witness testimony) of bad things that have happened to you behind closed doors...it's just a he said/he said case. Even for Broke Straight Boys they don't want the hassle and financial burden of broadcasting accusations of specific criminal or amoral behavior against outside named individuals and companies, and then have to go to court to defend those allegations by one of their models against another studio and its employees. So sometimes unfortunately, evil behavior in the world wins just be default.
We must keep in mind these same causes and issues face all of us whatever the sexual preferences & gender. With respect to suicide the vast majority of models come to terms with their work & sexual identity & a few such as Jos Alvarez freely admit to embracing their gay side.

Yes. That's true. With models we've lost it's not only issues of internalized homophobia or an "inability to come out" that brought down their self esteem. If gay porn models feel in hindsight like they have been exploited, used and abused and then discarded like yesterday's news...they'll carry all kinds of grievances and demons unless or until they work through them. Most of them fortunately will work through those grievances rather than give in to them. Some very straight or mostly straight gay for pay models will have a very healthy and reasonably positive attitude towards doing the work to help them bring in cash while they still have youth and beauty on their side. They can justify the work without the self-doubt or second guessing of the decision.
I thought about that too. I also wondered if some of those "heart failures" were the result of other things like underlying HIV related conditions or overdoses. I can see where some families would prefer to publicly announce that the loss of their loved one was the result of a tragic but very inane natural cause of death. Obviously the world is not full of people in their 30's and 40's who commonly die of heart attacks.

Whenever the subject comes up of porn stars, drugs and suicides, I always think of the metaphoric "Chicken-and-egg" question where it is not clear which of two events should be considered the cause and which should be considered the effect. There are always exceptions, but I do believe that the kind of kids who decide to do porn may have issues that lead them into the profession. For over a decade I would vacation on the Fort Lauderdale strip where I would pick up young straight identifying guys who were willing to let a gay guy suck their cock for money, (and were usually willing to do more with other guys who offered to pay more).
I would often find a regular guy for my week or two week vacation who I would see every day and I got to know the situations with these kids. And it was so interesting that for over a decade, they often had very similar stories. They came from broken homes, didn't get along with their dads or step dads, got into trouble in high school and dropped out, were involved with drugs in their hometowns and they heard that they could party on the beach, get high and make money from the "queers" who cruised the strip. And so my theory is the reason that so many porn actors died young as a result of drugs was more a result of their lifestyles that they were living, before they ever filmed porn.

When two young men with the bodies of young Greek gods get paid to have sex with each other, you can see how many would view that as a positive experience. How many good looking college boys are giving away their sexual favors for free to their girlfriends or boyfriends as the case may be, when for a relatively short period of time they could be getting paid to have the same or even better sex?

We had a member who spoke to that issue on another thread where he convinced college guys of 18-24 to monetize those youthful good looks while they still had them instead of just giving them away for free during some of their best sexual prime. (Or often going without any sex at all in the fickle college dating scene.)

Yes, that was me. Actually I was quoting from a conversation I had with the owner of a college boy escort service, whose boys were mainly straight college students (many with children making their money to satisfy their court child support orders) with some gay and some bi. His pitch to them was a full time college student could not also work full time and doing one or two one hour sessions on the weekend would generate more income than working full time in a fast food joint. I also read a few years ago an article in the New Haven Registrar describing an on line industry which matched college coeds with very affluent middle aged men, leaving the two to negotiate an agreement as to how much college financial aid would be given to the coed and how many days of sexual favors she would render to her sugar daddy in return. Though that article did not address it, I suspect that some male college students may have their own sugar daddy arrangements as well to help finance their college educations.
