When does an anti-fetish become a fetish?
What's an anti-fetish?
As far as I know, I just made the term up. But as a peruser of the pornographic arts, I have encountered many a fetish online. Furries confuse the hell out of me, for example, and the animal-human hybrids gross me out, especially in sexual situations. I am not a fan of kink shaming, but I also think a personal taste is not something that needs to be treated as sacrosanct and especially not given a respected minority status.
Anyway, as I am The Gay, I've come across some fetishes that feel exclusive to this interest group. In a way I guess the theme of this site is adjacent to a fetish? But one of the most baffling to me has been the socks one. What is with that? I admit to not being a big fan of feet and think they are often ugly. Perhaps usually in the case of men, especially the bigger, longer ones. Toes themselves are hideous things, and long toenails (on men or women) make me nauseous. I have tried to avoid looking directly at people's feet throughout my entire life. I'm a weirdo.
I remember the first time I saw someone wearing socks in a depiction of sex. It was the film American Pie 2. It annoyed the hell out of me. Why are you wearing socks while having the most intimate contact you can have with another person? I was far from interested in seeing Jason Biggs's feet or those of the girl he was having sex with in the movie, but it left me perplexed as to my own feelings.
Over the years, as I came to accept my own sexuality and the idea that pornography wasn't inherently morally wrong, I encountered many a foot. I never focused on them, but when I would see scenes with people wearing socks I would be annoyed. I felt this way about any clothing remaining. Underwear remaining around the thighs or ankles, stupid jock straps (why would anyone even wear one if not playing a sport?! The whole point of underwear is to protect your outer clothes from getting marred by discharges, and all jock straps do is cover up the genitals! Do you want your pants to reek of farts?!), or worst of all the shirt... so I get that's the root of it. I was so long denied (due to my Tragic Backstory™) the ability to be so intimate with another person, it felt like squandering your gift.
That weird scenario where you see naked people with socks on always grated on me. It felt almost purposeful. Much worse was seeing shoes on an otherwise naked person, when shoes are such filthy things. I've never been a fan of that bizarre Anglo thing of wearing shoes inside your own home. It wasn't until I saw some guys in a scene take their shoes off to take their pants and underwear off, and then PUT THE SHOES BACK ON that I realized that was part of the appeal to some. Mind-boggling. And it destroys any sense of verisimilitude. (Also a reason I usually leave the sound off.)
I get it. Not everything is supposed to appeal to me. Some people like things that I find repulsive, like fisting or scat or whatever. Some people like gay sex in shoes or in women's underwear or wearing Nixon masks. Live and let live. Who cares?
It would bother me still though if I was watching a scene and the camera would pan over and someone was still wearing socks or (much, much worse) shoes. It would turn me off. I would often jump to the end to see if they ever got around to it, and most videos I've found if you don't get the shoes or socks off pretty early, they're pretty much staying on. It got to the point where I came to appreciate the videos where the guys start out barefoot so I don't have to worry about it later, even though I love the stripping parts of sex. Since I didn't need to necessarily see the feet, it was fine as long as I knew the socks were gone.
So this August, I start my second semester at school. It's hot. A friend of mine asks me, is it true that the youth don't show their feet anymore? I'm like, "What?" And she sends me this article:
And so I start looking around. And it's true. On a crowded campus, in late August, I can only see a smattering of open-toed shoes. And, horror of horrors, lots of socks and sandals combos, which until recently was considered the height of lameness. WTF? Then I couldn't stop seeing it. Everyone and their stupid burgeoning ingrown toenails. I noticed that people on YouTube sometimes BLURRED their bare feet (I think as a joke at first, but now it feels like "no free foot pics" has gone too far). I asked a couple of my young friends and one twinky guy said, "why would you show your dogs?" Maddening.
In my brief time constantly looking at people's feet, I caught a couple of trends. Girls were WAY more likely to cover their feet than boys, which is a complete 180 from my youth. And white girls especially. Almost all the girls with visible toes were non-white. Conversely, most of the male feet were white boys.
It started to really annoy me. A lot. I feel like society doesn't need more opportunity to close yourself off, and starting some new Victorian age of foot enclosure is terrible. So with that knowledge, catching porn with socks on started to really grind me. Now when the socks came off, it was like a relief from agitation bordering on a thrill. Then it was a thrill. Now I'm turned on by the removing of socks (though not the feet themselves). Am I turning my disdain for a fetish into, not a foot fetish, but an anti-footwear fetish? I feel like I'm on a knife's edge. The excitement of the removal, but trying to avoid seeing the toes too much, lest I catch a hideous toe and be completely turned off. What a stupid situation.
Anyone still reading this, I hope you enjoyed my insomniac ranting! Send foot pics in response. Actually don't. Ankles are fine.

Gen Z Won't Let Anyone See Their Feet. Here's Why.
For the generation raised on the internet, there is a literal and figurative cost for open toes.
