We Lost Another Gay Child to Bullying :(

This truly saddens my heart. I remember what is was like to be bullied because I'm overweight. People didn't think punching me would hurt because of all the fat I had. I think it is even worse today for our kids whether for sexual orientation, looks, etc. The internet brings it all home. When I was that age, at least home was a safe place where I could get away from bullies. Kids today, don't have that freedom.

What to do, what to do to prevent another angel from despairing and taking his/her life before its time? I was bullied all my teen life and I perservered because I did not know how to defend myself against them which include even members of my extended family.
Looking back then, if someone told me that it will get better, I would laugh. For pete's sake, even torturers after a while have to stop beating their victims, that maybe relief for the victims but it doesn't solve the problem for the victims. Do you say to a rape victim, don't worry it will soon stop, just close your eyes, it will get better. Or to an abused wife, don't fret it will get better. Lets get real here, we don't know how to stop bullying because it comes out of our culture of homophobia and ingrained distain for those who are different. We can run or we can fight. I for one prefer to fight. Even if I die, I can rest in peace knowing that son-of-a-bitch didn't get away without a battle.

Another One...But With Reason for Hope.

Here is a story in the news right now that is equally as tragic. However there is a silver lining here that shows that society is evolving. In Sioux City Iowa there was yet another suicide of a gay 14 y/o Freshmen in high school. He was bullied in person and online to the point of suicide. However the city newspaper in one of the more conservative of the Red states jumped in with both feet to condemn this horrible event.

While it won't bring this poor young man back to us, I am nonetheless touched by the gesture of those at the paper who have stepped up in a big way. They made sure that his death would not just slip by as another statistic. The entire front page of the Sioux City Journal was exclusively devoted to the newspaper editorial on the subject of this very young man's death because of bullying. Below you can see photo of the front page, as well as read the editorial in its entirety.

I'll put the same thing I added to Facebook about this: not everyone will love you, but we all must respect you.

I read this before going to work today. I have a few gay kids in my practice and have been impressed with how open they have been and have attempted despite some community objection to form a gay-straight group. Although I live and work in a midwestern semi-rural/urban community I have been impressed with the complete lack of physical abuse against our gay youth. We even had to guys attend the prom with no issues. If only the rest of these great American States could see the benefit of peace and acceptance. My heart goes out to those poor parents. I think Obama is being a coward by not speaking out on this and other issues, feeling it may hurt his chances for election.

That is truely terrible! I dont understand why people are so affraid of what they don't understand! We are all the same, and the sooner parents start to teach there kids this the better.
