Rating Scenes on BSB

I've noticed some commentary on the forum recently about how and why some of us rate scenes as we do. First there is no "correct" method for us to assign our 1-5 rating on individual models or overall scenes. It is all completely up to each individual member of the site who chooses to vote. I may look at things differently than others, but I look at this as strictly a porn site, and I rate porn highly on if I get turned on, and give it a low score if it leaves me "limp". Years ago, Al Goldstein's Screw magazine had a method of reviewing porn called the "peter meter". Goldstein described the "peter meter" as “measuring tool for evaluation of porn films,” a meter which was “based on how many hard-ons it produced.”

I still use Al Goldstein's method. I don't especially care about the cinematography, the lighting, the set or anything other than if the scene produces a hardon for me. For me, porn is different from other forms of entertainment in that it has one purpose and that is to turn me on. And the degree of attractiveness of the model almost always the drives my desire to view a scene and I rate the scenes accordingly. Some may view this as being "shallow", as my late friend Johnny used to say. In that case I confess to being "shallow" in my porn viewing. And I don't need to give a great deal of thought to making a rating either. It is an immediate "brain to dick" reaction in me. If the guy is hot and the scene makes my dick twitch or throb, it gets a high rating and if not, it get a low rating.

I am making no value judgement on how others look at this or their methodology in giving a score, but to me, it is a very simple, no brainer, but also as Johnny used to say, "that's just me"................

I am in complete agreement with you, young Mike. I was trying to think of something else to add to your post...but I think you covered all the bases. You should have been a baseball coach.

I'm glad that you created this post because the rating is something that frustrates me at times. It is every person's choice to rate a scene however they please. I know I certainly do. However, I think my method is something that gives the site a little more information to go on based on certain qualities of the scene. This is rather than just giving a scene I like a 5 and a scene that I dislike a 1. My criteria for rating is based on turn-on of course, how far the scene partners go (kissing, oral, rimming, etc), the onscreen chemistry and climax.

Of course the special things that I like in a scene such as when the top does not pull out when he cums. This on my rating scale is a definite 5. A lot of the scenes on this site are, despite the guys in each scene being different, are the same. Some kissing, some oral, some anal whether it be a slow and smooth groove or straight up pounding. The top pulls out and shoots on the bottom. Almost every scene is this. Nothing new. I generally rate the scenes I like that do something different higher than others. I can't say for sure but judging by some of the scenes rated others may give ordinary scenes high or low scores based on whether they liked them. I'm not saying this is wrong in any way.

My point is, based on the multitude of comments I see on certain scenes where the viewers request things for the models to do, the changes do happen when the ratings are involved. For instance, the many people saying Brandon should stop shaving. In over two years of making scenes he's one of the top rated models and he still shaves/trims. However, when ratings are down it shows the viewers aren't satisfied with the product. More so than a few comments. Just my opinion and reason why I rate the way I do.

Mikeyank you raise a good point as usual. I rate on the Peter Meter myself. There certain things I don’t like, nelly twinks on Broke Straight Boys Nothing wrong with a nelly twink just don’t introduce them as straight guys on Broke Straight Boys! It’s my biggest pet peeve but it’s mostly falling on deaf ears around here! Lol. I give them a hard time as does my buddy Mikeyank for this but I have a feeling they would love a stable of Axels and Damiens and Bobbie Owens. Who the fuck wouldn’t. I think they can’t find them enough given the time and financial constraints. Anyway I hope that’s it because I sure would hate for them to just give up on the Broke Straight Boys concept of gay for pay that brought so many of us here.

I get so ticked at people rating scenes for the lighting and the acting and the camera work. I have a nick name for one that I’ve been hesitant to post but I think this is the right thread. I like to call him Cecil B DePorn, because he takes the staging and the camera work so seriously. Sure you should be able to see the fucking but I’m with Mikey, did my dick get hard and in the rare case did I come? That’s how you get stars from me! There are many more scenes that make me cream back in the archives than go up today. But when they do they get stars.

I'm kind of surprised that there is so much agreement on this seemingly basic concept to me, as I often read about how we should give high ratings for guys trying different things and working hard. To me, porn is very different from most other professions where looks do matter a lot and if a guy is not hot to me, and he doesn't turn me on, I can't give him a high rating, no matter what a polite and pleasant young man that he may be. And apparently that's not just me.......

I’m glad there is general consensus. I always thought it was strange that people seemed to be rating scenes on the lighting and production quality. Seriously, are the guys hot, is the sex good, maybe did they capture the action in a way that made the scene more of a turn on? And my big question is anyone in there believebly straight or at least masculine enough to float my boat. Nelly gay twinks no matter how cute sink my boat and my ratings. But as Johnny used to say that’s just me!
