With the recent announcement from Dublin Castle, the Marriage Equality referendum passed with about 63% of the vote. Only one constituency had more no votes than yes. Voter turnout nationwide was about 60%.

Congratulations to all who worked so hard to achieve this. Next steps are to have implementing legislation passed by the Irish Dail; and then signed by the President. No time table has been given, but I'm guessing it will be sooner rather than later.

I have never been more proud of my Irish heritage and ancestral homeland.

Erin Go Braugh !!

Yippeee! I'm so happy for them over there. This is the first time in history that a country has voted to legalize gay marriage through a referendum. And by a resounding majority no less. :thumbup1: :par50:

I hope that every country will be like this in the future as that's the way it should be for everywhere but for now I congratulate Ireland and may they be the match that lights the candles for other countries. X 🎊🎊🎊🎉🎉🎉

It is just another step closer to acceptance that WE are as equal as anyone else.

Do you think if the entire world accepted it it could ever happen here in a national vote? I worry about all those conservatives who seem to control us more and more.

Here's a few videos having to do with the leadup to the Irish vote.

Tampa you are always so good at digging back into forum archives, I'm surprised you missed the thread I started on 4/19/2015 specifically about this ad. And you even posted a thanks for my sharing it. You're slipping ... - lol !!!

That I am Stowe. lol I looked on the wrong side for the thread mentioning the Irish referendum.

It was Stowe who introduced me to the first video above. haha :)

This video is a little more of news documentary from a pro-gay rights perspective:

This one is a little more poignant and intense in the controversy of bringing gay marriage to what has always been such a conservative Catholic country. I was touched by the sentiments of the drag queen who hopes that the younger generation will not have to be as tough as she had to become to find her way in life. It's also interesting how the generational fissures play out in a western society in regards to gay rights. One thing I find fascinating here is the way the gay marriage vote cut across all classes of the youth. From the rough and tumble inner city, to the wealthier areas, the straight and gay youth of Ireland helped galvanize the vote of their parents' generation in support of gay rights. A 62% vote in favor also showed however that not a huge amount of older Irish people needed convincing. lol

This video brings to the fore some of the strong opinions held by those who fear for the upbringing of children without the influence of both a mother and a father. I'm guessing these are universal issues that will be discussed at length in all western societies.
