******************************

Poor Drake - not only are you too young to have seen or heard of The Carol Burnett Show - I'll bet your Daddy and Mama are, too!

Some of our great friends have given you some leads on this, Drake, but here is a little additional info, for you:

*The Carol Burnett Show, which aired from 1967 to 1978, won 25 prime-time Emmy Awards.
*It was a "variety" show, featuring song and dance and monologues, but, predominantly, sketch-comedy.
*It was noted for the lead comedienne and comedians, cracking up at inopportune moments - especially during sketches featuring the incomparable Tim Conway.
*It was widely regarded as one of the greatest comedy-series of all time, and was one of the most successful.
*It featured lavish musical numbers, orchestrations, and costumes - and was particularly noted for its parodies of classic Hollywood motion-pictures.
*Its lead comedienne, Carol Burnett, is widely regarded as one of the greatest American comediennes of all time. Her career was recently profiled on PBS' "American Masters".

****************************************

All of us who grew up with Carol Burnett, have our favourite scene from the show. Here is one of mine - a parody of "Gone with the Wind."

Here are some of my favourites (in no particular ranking, and without reference to historical period):

Dramas/dramedies:
*The Sopranos
*Friday Night Lights
*Shameless (U.S. version)
*Wolf Hall
*House of Cards (U.K. version)
*Prime Suspect (U.K. version, with Dame Helen Mirren)
*Six Feet Under
*Dead Again
*The Borgias
*"Masterpiece Theatre" - whatever the hell they've got going ;-)

Comedies:
*Northern Exposure
*Newhart
*All in the Family
*Get Smart
*Carol Burnett
*Monty Python's Flying Circus

Talk shows:
*Johnny Carson
*Dick Cavett
*George Stroumboulopoulos
*Charlie Rose (I watch Charlie religiously, every night: it helps me in my work.)
(Sorry to Jon, and all Brits - there are obviously lots of great chat-shows in the U.K., but we only ever see isolated episodes, over here.)

Documentary Programmes:
*The Fifth Estate (CBC - I've been watching this since I was 10)
*Frontline (PBS - never miss an episode, of this show, if I can help it)
*The Passionate Eye (CBC, but features many British and American docs, also)
*The Independent Lens (PBS, and CBC)

"A" XOXOXOXOXOXO
